HELP! 4G63 (G63B) radiator fan broke off!

Post by colt89 »

As the title says, my radiator fan has broken off! I'm not sure why, I'm wondering if a faulty water pump could have caused it? My water pump did have a leak and I was due to replace it, any how I opened the bonnet to top up the water and discovered the fan against the radiator. The belt is still intact and looks as good as new, but the bearing casing that was around the stalk on the fan is all busted with bits of metal teeth broken off.
Any body know how I go about fixing this? Do I need a whole new fan assembly? Or just the bearing case that was on the stalk? I've really got no idea and I need my L200 ute back on the road ASAP. :(

Here's some pics:

Do I need to replace the whole casing pictured here with the radiator hose coming from it?

Here's a shot of the bearing casing I'm talking about that was all chewed up. I was scraping bits out of the hole.

Here's a pic of the shaft, pics a bit blury but you can see it looks like some of the shaft where the groove is has been chipped off?

Thanks all for your help!

That water pump is toast... To me it looks like the shaft has snapped clean off the pump impellor. You must have heard this coming :| Yes, it's new water pump time. If you know how to, get rid of the pump driven fan and install an electric thermo fan. They are more efficient at cooling the engine while the car is stationary and will neaten up the engine bay a little. Not hard to do and should be 'do-able' for about $100

The ute is so loud (it sounds like an army tank), I honestly didn't hear it coming! I knew the water pump was on it's way out though, because it was leaking and was going to replace it ASAP anyways....

I've was hoping it would be a simple procedure to remove the pump, but after trying to undo the bolts I've realised I'm going to have to remove the timing belt covers and belt etc....

Are there any thorough guides on this job? I've only been able to find info on DHOC turbo 4G63 motors...I need info for an old NA... I've got no idea really how to mess with the timing but I can't afford a mechanic either :(
