Hi all

myself and 2 mates picked up a genuine 1 lady owner GH Stigma 2.6 Astron - carbie, 5 speed (with worlds worse reverse).
She lost her licence in 1999, then it sat in a shed for 11 years.
Then we got hold of it...

slowly turning it into a Rally / Khanacross car.
Sharing the drives at these events, as most of them allow up to 4 drivers per car.
So the car gets to go around the tracks 3 times more than the other cars!

located in Adelaide, South Oz (or Radelaide as we prefer to call it, cause it's Rad!)

hoping to find lots if useful info here.

mods so far:
removed air-con completely
new filters, etc and fluids
stripped interior (was mint as sorry peeps, even had the luxury reclining rear seat)
removed sound deadening
installed SAAS seat
sump guard
new rear brake cylinders (one was weeping)
15" rims and rally tyres (Pirelli P-Zeros 195's)
pumped guards slightly (running 10mm spacers on front to clear struts with bigger rims and wheels)
fitted rear tow point
paint job and stickered up

mods to go:
shedloads, including but not limited to...
roll cage (half at first / full eventually if it lives long enough!)
lsd if we can find one (any ideas peoples?) or lock the diff (CIG)
remove engine fan and install thermo fan
harness
2nd seat for Navi plus 2nd harness
big eff off rear wing (just for looks!)
possible efi setup off a magna (including head)
possible turbo it?
remove harmonic balancer from engine?
suspension - maybe front struts from a crummydore? maybe heavier oil in the factory ones?
spotlights for day / night events
roof vents
intercom and terratrip
heavy duty clutch when we kill this one
possible rear disk brake setup
braided lines
and whatever else we can find on here, or gets suggested to us, or random mods we think of

hmm, will have to look at ID plate again. I swear it says GE on there... Dec 1980 from memory is build date.

diff swap from scorpion - sounds like a plan, altho trawling thru these forums, it doesn't look like a straight "easy" swap, bit of messing around...

and yes, remove harmonic balancer, but there's a kit we need to get i believe.
this should make the engine rev harder, and as it's for motorsport only, we don't care if it reduces engine life

diff swap from scorpion - sounds like a plan, altho trawling thru these forums, it doesn't look like a straight "easy" swap, bit of messing around...

It is a straight forward swap as long as you get all the bits you need FROM THE SCORPION.
1. Scorp Diff with ALL the control arms.
2. Scorp Handbrake cable.
3. Scorp tailshaft flange that bolts to the diff (and I'd recommend a new uni joint as well).
DONE.

and yes, remove harmonic balancer, but there's a kit we need to get i believe.

BALANCE SHAFT ELIMINATION KIT

PS: the balance shaft removal won't shorten the life of the engine, but it might shorten the engine mount life.

It gets a lot of admiring glances and comments (the paint job and the stickers just look sa-weet!)

i have done balance shaft removal in 2 and 2.6 lt....taking fan of front of motor is a better result than removing shafts, but a minor one at that!!..its a pain in arse job, in car to do...and taking them out wont make it rev harder...maybe at best let it rev out quicker....lighten the fly wheel!! that will make heaps more difference! and easier a job...believe me!! id only do balance shafts now, if i was rebuilding a motor...not a going one in a car...id leave it sealed up

yeah we're a bit up in the air about removing balance shaft, couple people we've spoken to say it's easy, but then when they explain what to do, maybe it's not so easy, especially with engine in the car.
Just added to my first post to remove engine fan and replace with thermo fan - picked one up at u-steal-it on monday but forgot about it

Lighten flywheel - just machine it down a bit?
that will give more power, but remove a bit of torque yes?

something to look at when we replace the clutch (when it dies)

yeah! machine it down and then get it balanced/checked...engine reco places might do it?? i usually dont get it balanced
its a hard one to explain what it actually does...??? one thing is less weight to spin up... and is more responsive....
clutch grab is different, it needs more finesse with revs... but generally better!!
one reason they are heavier from factory, it makes car easier to take of from standing start...
i would recommend it any way!!
and balance shaft topic... resealing motor is the fun part of job...have to remove sump (new gasket) to do properly with no leaks...and caution with front of head gasket too! timing cover mates to head surface...

yeah ok, a bit more research, and it does nothing to power or torque.

Just lets you rev higher faster, and also lets revs drop quicker.

Awesome for track / race / rally.
Sh#t for street, unless you often go for a spirited drive...

while at the same time enjoying somebody loving our car!

We were talking afterwards saying we should have got ya number, cause you seemed to know a shitload about these babies - great to see ya on here.

Next event May 1st - we'll be filling up at the same Mobil

pic from 2nd event couple weeks ago with more sponsor stickers - she looked the goods before, she looks even better now...
(still room on the bonnet, roof, boot and top of rear quarters for a major sponsor - hint hint)

update time:

maybe i should start a new thread? anyway..

Harness bar welded in.
Harness installed.
Diff locked (nice work Marky at Exhaust Technology).
Cold air induction and Pod filter installed.
Bonnet scoop on
Fan removed from alternator (every little bit helps!)
Engine fan removed.
Thermo fan fitted and wired up
Battery mounted inside over the axle.
Sandpaper glued on the pedals.
Rear Wing of love installed.

have also rebuilt a carby to fit shortly (also removed choke and made the acceleration lobe more aggressive with a bit of grinding - comes on full throttle earlier - in theory)
and also got a nice shiny alloy checker plate drivers floor to fit.
will be throwing a set of extractors ($175 ebay specials) and a straight thru exhaust at some point, but not before the next event.
Apparently this will let if rev an extra grand, according to a couple guys at the Khanacross who have messed with these babies in the past.

Benno went to u-pull-it last week, and practised removing the balance shaft - easy he says. Sweet.

Had an event on Sunday - locked diff = awesome fun. A car rolled there, so now extra keen to fit a cage before next event 12th June.
Next event will be faster again, Autocross, so no Chiccanes.

Shifta - filled up at the Mobil down your way, and we had a different bloke come up and drool over the Stigma of Love.
Every 2nd man and his dog seemed to own one of these at some point!

Howdy guys I'm Benno, one of the other owners of the CBD Racing Sigma.

Its good to see some comments on our car.
We aim to have as much fun as possible with the car.
Hence the locked diff
Shifta: I was the guy you spoke to at mobil when we were on the way to Mt Compass for the sigma's first event. It has since survived another two events, and will be lining up for the next event, an autocross on june the 12th at lanac park(near mt compass) (Sothern Districts Car Club Track).

We are thinking of fitting extractors and free flowing exhaust before the autocross, do they make a bit of diffence on an Astron? any preference to brand?
(I havn't had much to do with Astron's in the performance aspect)

Maybe we should move the sigma to the build thread section?

Had a dyno day last weekend.
the Stigma of Love put out 57.4 on it's first run, then 57.5 killerwaspsatw on it's second run.
No engine mods other than:
removed fan
new intake (pod filter and snorkel)

Will have to scan and post up the dyno sheet. Nice big long flat power band - nice

Benno picked up a sweet set of brand spanker Pacemaker Extractors on Saturday - 2" custom straight thru exhaust system here we come!

BTW: The blue curve was done at 1/2 throttle.

Standard bottom end.
Balance Shafts removed.
Standard M7 head (no port or valve work done on it at all) but with adjustable rockers.
Mild cam . Camtech Stage 2 CT107-712B
Extractors.
Oh, and I'm also running Quad 38mm motorbike carbs

.

These engines love to breathe and putting on a larger set of carbs (or EFI) will make a big difference.

With a Magna EFI setup (running 95 octane), you should gain roughly the same as what I have done (but I was only running E10)
