GB Engine Swap Under 1600cc
GB Engine Swap Under 1600cc
Next year i am looking at racing my GB Galant in A class which is 1600 and under (Non Turbo). I was wondering if there were any engine swaps i could do for a later model 1600 engine that wouldn't be to difficult or need engineering? Or would i be better sticking with the 4g32 and upgrading that?
Cheers

Are you limited to an engine from the same manufacturer by class rules?
If so, build up a 4G32 and strip anything not needed for going fast out of the car.
If not, 4AGE. Cheap, easy to get power and very, very common.

Re: GB Engine Swap Under 1600cc
If you want to go with a 4A-GE, and want to spend a little more money, check out the 'Black Top' 4A-GE :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_A_e ... 0-valve.29
It is NA with quad throttle bodies. "This revision increased the power to 165 PS (121 kW) at 7,800 rpm with 16.5 kg·m (119 ft·lbf) of torque at 5,600 rpm."
The only problem with these engines in RWD configurations is the dizzy/angle sensor at the back of the head. If you check the Toyota forums, people use them in the early RWD Toyotas, and have ways of getting them to fit.

20v 4A's also have ITB's, which is awesome in it's own right
I'm going to suggest www.ae86drivingclub.com.au for info on building a hot 4AGE

Or a Mivec motor out of a Mirage Cup Car. Standard they put out 129KW but believe the Cup Cars were putting out 145KW.
If you can somehow find all the good bits to build the 4G32 ( #5cam, C2 pistons and so on),I believe they can put out fairly good power.

Re: GB Engine Swap Under 1600cc
just build up the 32.. i have no concrete proof, but my 32 is supposed to have just over 200hp..
you run a 200hp engine in a sub 800kg car and you should be pretty competative, atleast have a shitload of fun!

Which is about 150KW. I guess this figure is at the flywheel. Pretty good for a 1600cc motor.
I believe the factory rally cars were putting out 169kw.

Re: GB Engine Swap Under 1600cc
i just re-checked my info, seems i pulled that figure from where the sun dont shine..
my engine should be putting out about 150-160hp
and it has a lot of work done..
169kw from a 4g32? thats what.. 230-240hp?thats a fair effort..

Re: GB Engine Swap Under 1600cc
your figures are a tad excited, a well done 32 engine would be lucky to get 90rwkw

Re: GB Engine Swap Under 1600cc
im talking hp, not kw..
from my info, the C-2 engine package increases power by 75%, and can achieve more with intake and exhaust modifications, which i have.. along with ignition upgrades,
and 150hp is 112kw.
though i dare say this is measured at the flywheel..

I wouldn't necessarily believe what you read in factory brochures & manuals matefrom my info, the C-2 engine package increases power by 75%, and can achieve more with intake and exhaust modifications, which i have.. along with ignition upgrades, and 150hp is 112kw. though i dare say this is measured at the flywheel..

Manufacturers always quote their power figures at the flywheel .... which of course you can only measure on an engine dyno.
As a rough rule of thumb, a friend of mine (who used to build competition engines for a living) told me that getting 100hp/litre from a NA motor is very good. Anything over that you are looking at something very special.
Re: GB Engine Swap Under 1600cc
The Gosford Dyno Tune Lancer that Ian Hill used to run had 110hp at the wheels and the GENUINE Lancer GSR that they built for Mike Bell had 118. These were probably 2 of the quickest lancers being rallied in NSW at the time (1975-80)krohny wrote:im talking hp, not kw..

Ian had a lot of support from Mitsubishi with the development of these cars.

I know its a real late reply and prob not necassary now...... but i have just read an article in an olf Hot4's mag that a guy put in a carbied version of the Toyota Corolla (that 4ga-ze or whatever you called it) 1600cc motor in a MkI ford cortina using Sigma engine mounts....spells bolt in conversion....sorry...i cant remember what gearbox they used.....i think it was a celica 5 speed from memory

Re: GB Engine Swap Under 1600cc
I would be lucky to have 50hp/litre and it is good fun. Just went for a drive this morning in the wet and really have to watch throttle once 'on cam' easy spins up in 2nd and will in 3rd if your flat footed at 4000rpm, loldavetrees wrote: As a rough rule of thumb, a friend of mine (who used to build competition engines for a living) told me that getting 100hp/litre from a NA motor is very good.
