weld on coilover sleeves
hi i know a few guys have done this previously but im ging to do it myself so i was hoping to find out what is involved?
where do i find the sleeves?
what springs do i use and how many Lb
what strut tops are needed

I was going to get some softer springs to try on wet days
I also made my own stut tops and spring tops
cut down the struts and used shorter inserts
I just have to get the 3 phase from the pole out the front of the house to the meter box
and I can offer these parts on the for sale section
the lineman was ment to do it yesterday but thats life

i know alot of memebers would be interested in kits, you may be onto something.
All i really need to know is
-where to buy the threaded sleeves, adjusting nuts and spanners?
- what springs to use, and how many lb do i need for gd coupe with ASTRON engine?
- im going for adjustable strut tops, so also what strut tops do i need, in order to modify themto fit galant?

these bolt into the std top suspention mount
and the list goes on scorpion diff housing mod by cheaterparts
cam ground to cheaterparts turbo spec - vernier drilled cam gear
tramp bars by cheaterparts
now i've finish my bull sh!ting
I machine the threaded bits and the top spring mount as well as the adjustable top caps
that are in the pic from karls post
as for the spring rate I thought we put 280 pound in karls car

For my rallycar I got a kit from noltec with everything I needed to suit a commodore strut as I use commodore bilsteins which bolt straight into the sigma struts. And I just use standard stut tops.
But...A friend was trying to track down a kit, and apparently noltec was bought out by whiteline and they don't offer these for sale any more. Which sucks.
The kit came with-
Threaded tubes
Nuts (to suit 63mm ID king spring)
Top spring platforms
Adjusting tools

Cheater - Do you have any part numbers or know what model the shorter shockers are that you are using, I am about to cut my struts down just need the shockers to suit.
I have heard a lot of people using commodore shocks, I assume early vb-vk type, if they drop straight in without shortening the struts too much you wouldn't be able to go lowering the car a lot other wise you will be at the bottom of the shocker stroke range. I guess this is ok for rally cars that really arn't that low and maybe some street cars, I was jacking up the front corner on my track only LB to see what height I want and the stock shocker didn't like it and spat oil out everywhere

I have Starion front struts. Use Skyline/Pintara insets.
The insert body is 40mm shorter than Starion/Sigma and the stroke is 30mm shorter.
I just cut 40mm out of the strut tube below the locknut thread and dropped them in. Fits the Mitsu top mount bush perfectly.
I am using Lovell low springs, and everything is captive

Sweet. I run camira inserts in mine same as cheater i think. They are 100mm lower (i think) and alot heavier(bump an rebound) than factory shocks. FWD's run quite heavy front ends compared to RWD.

I also am using the camira inserts ,but in shortened commonwhore uprights ,
bout 40mm necked out of its height
r31 doesnt have a strong "race parts" list ,, unless you start using Z-car stuff on them

Could be worth looking into, i know GTS skylines had bilstein rear shocks, maybe they had the same in the front?
HR31's (jap r31's) might have some stuff available as they were actually a proper sports car over there, unlike aussie ones that got fitted out with domestic crap so they had enough local content to be made here.

Today I tried fitting VB Commo front shocks into standard GJ Sigma front struts, and perfect fit. Then tried fitting same shocks into some standard Starion struts, but found the struts were about 8mm shorter & could not secure the top cap to the strut tube. Has anyone a simple solution on how to make these shocks fit Starion struts ? ;)

Thanks Cheater, I was thinking the same thing with a longer thread on the strut cap.
It might be quicker for you to get a 3 phase portable generator, rather than wait for the street power. I have seen a "cheque in the mail" turn up quicker than your power

some time in the next 2 weeks I should have power
hope its not like a " cheque in the mail " quicker would be better

Oh and just a note, if your lathe is struggling to start up then ask your sparky if he can put a star delta starter on the motor.

Me thinks 300lb is a bit light for a circuit car..........
We used 325lb in my 2.6 powered LA,on the street, and anywhere upto 525lb on the circuit, with suitably revalved Koni's.
Try some of your suspension places for coilover kits...... e.g. Wholesale suspension, in Sydney, have them.
They make them in various diameters, to suit different strut bodies.

but it does depend on the tyres you would spring the car tighter with slicks
also your ride height - roll centre and track width also come into it
we running IPRA have a control tyre - AO32R - AO48R yokys so dont have the grip levels
of slicks ( or some other brands of R rated tyres ) this lends it self to lighter springing
if you look at my avatar thats at honda corner PI and hooking in fairly hard on 300 Lb fronts

I have a similiar photo of my car on the apex of the same corner with 450lb in the front, and it looks soft, in my eyes. (when i get to buying a scanner i'll post it up)
IPRA nationals in '99 if i remember correctly........
We had to use A008RS in NSW, whilst tyres were still free in every other state, back then. The dunlops and the falkens were about 1.5sec alap faster than the yokies.
