1974 LA Lancer Classic Rally Build
Hi, Over a period of time starting in 1994 I have owned a 1974 LA Lancer EL 2 Door originally built by Bob Riley. I plant to post photos and some notes of what has evolved to the present. The Lancer is currently awaiting a Camshaft so the engine can be completed and installed.

Re: 1974 LA Lancer Classic Rally Build
Getting the hang of this, shot of engine when bought, still the current engine that is being rebuilt. I believe it is the original engine/configuration that Bob Riley put together.
Plenty of power for a 2 litre, with c/r gearbox and 4.6 LSD. Ran 14.6 at Fast Fours & Rotaries Jamboree, 1996 I think?

Re: 1974 LA Lancer Classic Rally Build
It had plenty of traction, 4.6 LSD and tramp bars. The diff housing was bent and braced to give some negative camber at rear...not really concerned about tyre wear are we!
Had 2 good runs and then parked it before something broke.
Started a major rebuild in 2011, after being stored for a few years. I'll start posting the recent photos soon.

14.6 with a 4.6:1 ratio???
What speed were you doing at the bottom end?? the car must've topped out with a ratio that short

Not quite finished, that was 2011, currently taking a breather while waiting for new billet cam to be ground.Scorpma82 wrote:intersting pic......so the car will be finished tomorrow??? lol
Then in goes the engine. The Differential, Gearbox , clutch, brakes have all been rebuilt, trim and most of interior done and then MCA Suspension wil do his magic.
Trying Fuel injection with throttle bodies mounted on Weber manifold.
Some of the new bits...
Port matched and ceramic coated the original custom made headers.

Looking good so far how did the car go on the rotor? How was it mounted?

Hi, made up a bar that bolted to bumper bar mounts F&R, then welded to rotisserie, car was not that heavy with everything off.
Re: 1974 LA Lancer Classic Rally Build
Very nice LA you have Classicrally74.
I've had a couple of LA's years ago which were my road car's that I used for doing motorkhana's and Dirt circuits in.
Is that a 4G63 you're running in it? It should be interesting to see how it goes when you finish the rebuild with the fuel injection. my dad used to have a GB many years ago with a 4G63 with factory twin solex's and GS cam.
Looking forward to watching the outcome of your LA.

Thanks Nath, Here is a teaser photo from when it came back from painters mid 2012, we then pulled all trim off it and refitted restored repainted rechromed repolished every last bit of it. All new window rubbers and new screen were fitted in the photo. Will post close ups soon. Very happy with how it is turning out.

Re: 1974 LA Lancer Classic Rally Build
The LA's Gearbox, Clutch, Differential and Front Struts lived in my 4G32 Powered GB Rally Car for a few years......until an unplanned inversion forced its retirement.
Found a couple more photos...miss that car...had a lot of fun in it.

Re: 1974 LA Lancer Classic Rally Build
Nice GB you used to have. Shame about the inversion. Seen many a nice rally car come to an abrupt retirement. Is that a 16L grill on it?
Also, was wondering which of the 2 cars you thought handled better? curious to know.

Re: 1974 LA Lancer Classic Rally Build
Nath, have to go with the Lancer for handling, we ran the basic Galant front end with the wisbone style swingarms. We had a good ten years of play time before the Galants demise, never front runners but always smiling at the finish. The grille was off a GS, badge is in behind spotlights.
Still have a lot of stuff we pulled off before sending it to scrap people. Must itemise one day and put up for sale.

Nice looking unit ! Should be a lot of fun when finished. Another potential Historic Rally Association member ?
.... and if you still have that Galant 16LGS grille in the shed and want to get rid of it, let me know

Davetrees,
Not sure if it qualifies with the big motor? Plan to do some tar events first, and think about dirt later.
I'll have to dig out the bits now!

Re: 1974 LA Lancer Classic Rally Build
There's lots of non-historic-spec cars in the club (and quite a few Lancers & Galants too). Similarly, our events accept most cars as long as they are 2wd & non-turbo.
What's the engine, just out of interest ... a non-balance-shaft 4G52 or similar ?

Re: 1974 LA Lancer Classic Rally Build
Dave,
Engine is 2.0 litre 4G63 but 8 valve motor with some very special internals & work done to head and block.
Goes hard and is good match to car's weight, the extra weight over the standard engine's weight hasn't affected the basic handling of the car with turn in etc
