How to identify the type of motor?

Post by colt89 »

Hi guys, I thought I already did this post the other day, but it disappeared?
Anyhow I was hoping you guys could tell me how to identify the types of motors I have in my 1980's L200's I acquired recently. And also if I am able to interchange motors with each other.
They've both been tinkered with by their previous owners so I'm not sure if it's the original motors with them, and one is missing a rocker cover and the other has no markings.
My first L200 has a rusty body full of holes, but runs pretty well. On it's compliance plate it says "4G32", there are no markings on the rocker cover. Are there stamps or anything elsewhere on the motor that could confirm it's motor type?

With my second L200 it's got a good body and it's a 5 speed 4X4. The compliance plate says "4G52" yet I think it may actually be a 4G63. There is no rocker cover and this motor Its currently stripped down and has been honed and just needs rings and bearings
according to the previous owner. I tried calling him to confirm the motor type but I've had no response of course....

So on the information given so far any body think I'd be able to chuck the first motor into the 4X4 until I get the other motor put back together again? And also how can I find out what is what?

Cheers guys!

Hi!

Normally, on the right hand forward side of the engine, close to the waterpump, there is a small rectangular sticking out of the engine block. On there you can find the engine code: G32 if you have a 4G32 engine and under that you have the engine serial number.

4G52 and 4G63 are both 2 liter engines. The easy way to distinguish them is that the 4G63 has the alternator on the RH side (like the 4G32) and the 4G52 has it on the LH side...

Hope this helps you

Even easier way to distinguish between the '52 and the '63 engines are the 4G52's have an alloy timing cover (and individual inlet runners on the inlet manifold) for chain drive and the 4G63's have a plastic cover for the timing belt (and paired inlet runners on the inlet manifold)

(This is a manifold from a 4G62 fwd engine - note the thermostat housing is at the other end of the manifold but the layout is the same)

The last pic isn't entirely correct for a RWD - 4G63 i think: on my 4G63 twin carb i have the thermostat housing at the side of the belt...

Hi guys thanks for the info so far. If the motor for the 4X4 is indeed a 4G63 does it need to be modified in order to add a turbo set up?

Alright I had a closer look and the block for the 4X4 is a 4G63, and the engine in the other L200 is a 4G32. Now while I rebuild the 4G63 am I able to drop in the 4G32 into my 4X4? Will it mate up fine with the current gearbox?

Thanks
