Hey guys,

1980 lancer LC coupe/hatchback

Engine: 4g32 1600cc twin solex carburettor
Transmission: 5 speed manuel
Odometer: 70,500kms
Color: Silver

The car hasn't been started in 11 years and the interior is in pieces. So it will be a fairly big project. The engine bay needs a serious clean, it even has vintage cobwebs

Ill get some more exterior pics later on in the project, I'm going to focus more on the interior/engine bay first

After cleaning and a basic service on my engine i got the beast running! And looking a lot better then before



What i did:
Firstly, I covered the carbies with a few rags and then sprayed the engine bay with a hose to get rid of all the cobwebs, spiders and some surface dirt. Following that I removed the distributor cap and spark plugs (one at a time so i didn't mix up the leads) and gave them a good clean. I used a small wire to remove majority of the carbon followed by light sand paper on the tip, then rinsing it in petrol. After that i cleaned out the air filters with a compressor, rubbed the chrome tops with steel wool which got rid of a lot of the surface rust. Futhermore, draining all fluids and flushing out the radiator, engine oil, and put a few cups of fuel in the tank and let it drain out.

Within 3 minutes of playing with the choke and pumping the accelerator the engine started!

To clean up the engine a bit i rubbed all the black pipes and the blue leads with a soapy rag, then washing down with a clean rag. I put a rust dissolver product on the extractor manifolds (didn't work too well). Then finally i scrubbed the rocker cover with steel wool to get rid of the rough surface, followed by a little bit of aluminium polish.

It looks pretty good, what's it like for rust?

Fairly good.. I actually just finished scraping back the small amount of rust off the bonnet. You can see the rust I am targeting in the photo of the car on the car trailer. I think there is a like a spec on the roof, might just treat it and dab a fraction of paint on it

I thought so, the guy who sold it said in the description it had extractors.. but oh well.. I actually took it for a drive down my street tonight. sounds meaty.

What about around the rear side louvers?
Take them off and have a look.
It's the first place the hatchbacks' go when they rust.

Yer theres no rust there.. it was about 3 hours inland from the sea though, which could be a plausible explanation.

Im having trouble getting my tacho to work.. There are 8 wires coming out from the speedo/tacho/gauges and only 7 wires on the connection plug.. I followed the 8th wire and it leads to the tacho, however where would i find the wire that its suppose to connected to? where is the point of origin of this wire?

Thanks Phil, I'm happy with the engine bay for now however the silver paint work has really small spots all over it. Which when polished will stand out :/ Im considering getting it resprayed but i'll have to see how my budget it going after i get it on the road

you might need to clay bar it then. mine had white spots all over it when i bought it so i clay barred it and they came straight off

what i did was wash, claybar, wash(i cant remember if i washed after the clay bar but im pretty sure i did), cut n polish, wash and wax.

Do you have to get a specific colour clay bar to match the colour of your car?

im pretty sure you can get any clay bar ive used both the meguirs and the mothers clay bar. Both are as good as each other

Next step. sand down bumpers, side vents and grill for respray..

Problem:

If the car is idling with no problems, and i put my foot down on the accelerator it chokes and if kept down stalls. If i slowly compress the accelerator it revs upto red line area. Is this a carby issue or is it something else?

look down the carbs and lift the throttle. you should see fuel spirt out into the throat of the primary. If not you have a accelerator pump block. Its richens up the mix when you open the throttle to stop it from leaning out. Sounds like your promlem. if it hasnt been run in 10 years you will need to take apart the carbs and clean and put new seals and gaskets in. Very easy, do one at a time, if you get stuck, take apart the second to see how its done.

Just got back from my mechanics with the LC.. got a big list of things to do haha, majority of the problems were under the car, which i havent really had a good look at because i dont have a hoist..

things i need:

Blinker combo switch (snapped on the way over, grr dad)
Gear box mount is cracked
Sway bar link pin bushes
Bottom ball joints
Front brake hoses
Front break pads
Front struts

If you know where i can find any of the above it would be greatly appreciated haha

even though they say theyre for corollas, lancer hatches have the same part number. as for the rest give autosurplus in melbourne a call. they saved me a ton of money and had alot of the parts i needed. they do express shipping so youll have virtually next day delivery

If the combo switch is the same as in GC/GD Galant - no idea if they are or not - then I have a NOS one in the shed that's of no use to me unless I rewire it & change the conectors to suit a GB (I bought it thinking all the Galant ones were the same )

No they aren't. The blinker stalk is a headlight switch, and the other side has the wiper control.

So the NOS blinker that dave has wont fit on my LC? Ive attempted a soldering/aroldyte join to try and fix the problem however I wont be suprised if it snaps again.

What shock absorbers should I buy?

I was looking at this, only because they sell individual shock absorbers and thats all I need to get it roadworthy. But im not sure if it will fit on my car.

Also what is the difference between a rear shock and a front shock?

Anywhere will sell shocks individually, but you should always replace them in pairs.

Front shocks are a sealed insert that goes inside the strut (if your struts are original, they will be oil-filled ... the shock mechanism will need to be removed, the oil drained out, and an insert put in the strut body). Rears are totally different.

If you don't know the difference (which I suspect is the case, seeing you are considering buying shocks for a completely different model car than what you have ?) then I strongly suggest you go to a suspension specialist & get them to supply & fit a set.

If you just want basic / cheap (with performance & reliability to match) .... just go to your nearest Pedders outlet and buy their standard stuff (eg. "Comfort Gas" or "Sports Gas" or whatever.

Personally though, I'd suggest KYB Excel-G shocks ... they are good quality & not overly expensive (about $100-$120 per corner, plus fitting if you don't know how to do it yourself).
The front strut inserts for LB/LC Lancer are the same as for GA->GD Galant and also GE Sigma. KYB Part No. 365004
According to the KYB online cattledog, rears for LB/LC are Part No. 343030

Yer its just ive been quoted ridiculous prices (gold coast) upwards of $600 for a pair of front shock absorbers installed.

Are these the ones you were talking about?

Those are for a Hyundai ...... and will probably be a complete strut assembly rather than just an insert. (Many modern cars don't have replacable inserts). Same series of shocks though.

$600 to fit & supply ? That's over the top, depending on what sort of shocks they are !

Should be no more than a couple of hours labour max to fit them @ say $80-$100/hour ... plus the price of the shocks. Get another quote, broken down into parts & labour.

(Rear shocks you can fit yourself easy - should take about 15 mins max per side)
