Leeroy's 1980 Lancer A73 resto project
Re: Leeroy's 1980 Lancer A73 resto project
Yer I was just double checking because of the name 'excel G'.. hyundai excel.
I have a mechanic friend that said he would help me with the install, where do you think I should buy the shock inserts?
Another shot in the dark, will these suffice? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/KYB-FRONT-SH ... 231def539a

Well if you fit it, how are you going to turn your wipers on?Leeroy wrote:So the NOS blinker that dave has wont fit on my LC? Ive attempted a soldering/aroldyte join to try and fix the problem however I wont be suprised if it snaps again.
It may physically fit, but it wont do what it needs to.
I used to have a spare unit but sold it with my hatch. Shame, I could have helped you out with it

Re: Leeroy's 1980 Lancer A73 resto project
Its all good, I cut and bent a metal plate to fit over the top of the blinker stalk then I drilled 2 holes and put a rivet as the pivotting rod of the blinker switch then a bolt through both the plastic casing and the metal plate to hold it all together, so far so good.. just need to use the dremel tool to shave some plastic on the inside that is getting out of the way. Ill post pics with a explanation of what I did later incase someone else runs into the same problem as me. Because I know i struggled with it.75wagon wrote:Well if you fit it, how are you going to turn your wipers on?Leeroy wrote:So the NOS blinker that dave has wont fit on my LC? Cheap fix for snapped blinker combo switch:
Firstly I measured out a metal plate to act as a bracket for the blinker stalk. I used aluminium for this. I bent the metal plate into place using a pair of pliers then drilled the holes required for the bolt and pin. After that it was just a case of testing whether or not it the plate gave enough room for all the switches to switch efficiently. In my case it was a little tight on the RH blinker side so I used a dremel tool to grind out some of the plastic to enable the pin to move sufficiently. Looks dodgy but it works and saves me time and money looking for a replacement.
Metal plate used as a bracket for blinker combo switch repair.

A bolt to stabilise the join and a pin to act as the pivoting system for the headlights.

They are exactly the ones I was talking about - and that's a REALLY good price - but looks like the auction has ended ?Leeroy wrote:Another shot in the dark, will these suffice? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/KYB-FRONT-SH ... 231def539a
You should be able to buy them just about any decent parts place or shock specialist .... places like Bursons will get them in for you ... just quote the part number.
Re: Leeroy's 1980 Lancer A73 resto project
Yer i researched the part number and it said it was the same so I bought it. $170 for 2 new shocks isnt too bad, thanks dave XD
I also have bought link pin bush kit for $28 now i just need brake pads and hoses.

Re: Leeroy's 1980 Lancer A73 resto project
That's very cheap for those .... I paid $120 each for mine 3 years ago, and that was a small discount off retail$170 for 2 new shocks isnt too bad

Re: Leeroy's 1980 Lancer A73 resto project
Took my car for a drive tonight. First drive on public roads XD
Problems:
Slight issues with the carbys (as expected)
Massive lack of power in the high rev range
Wheel alignment needed
Accelerator cable needs tightening
Tomorrow I will be attempting to install my new shocks, brake pads and brake hoses. Unfortunately the sway bar link pin bushes havent come in the mail yet so they will have to wait until later.

Possibly a flat spot.. One of my mates said he would come over on saturday and have a look at it for me. Shouldnt be too much of a problem

Gearbox mount issue :/
I ordered a "lower gearbox mount" from bursons and they gave me this:

I said to the guy, this says engine mount, he replied with engine mount/lower transmission mount is the same part. I wasnt sure so i went home and looked underneath my car, doesnt look like the part i need :/ Does anyone know if this is the correct part?

yeh gearbox mount and engine mount is what its listed as. as for gearbox mount the one you wanted is the same as the l300 i think. thats what bursons had listed as the right one. the best thing to do with these cars is to take your original one in and get them to compare it
Re: Leeroy's 1980 Lancer A73 resto project
Oh ok, so the part that I bought isnt the one I need?
Theres really heavy rain outside, so unfortunately I cannot take the old one off. I got soaked just holding the part I just bought up the the broken one under the car and it didnt look right, however that was with the rubber casing over the top.

Re: Leeroy's 1980 Lancer A73 resto project
It stopped raining and I was able to take my gearbox mount into bursons. The guy ordered a new part in and I went in to pick it up today and they still got it wrong
I'm starting to wonder how this guy got a job there.. Im pretty sure we have ordered the right part now and it should be arriving tomorrow, after that I just need an end cap that Cottees has generously offered me from his spare car then I can get a roadworthy and ill be on the road!

Re: Leeroy's 1980 Lancer A73 resto project
Problem:
Front right wheel making grinding/rubbing noise when the car moves. The noise gets faster as the car increases in speed.
At first I thought this might be the wheel bearing but with a closer look I think its the front axle :/
Any ideas on how to fix this?

Re: Leeroy's 1980 Lancer A73 resto project
It can't be the stub axle - they don't rotate, and it's obviously a "rotational problem" if it changes with speed..
Does it still make the noise with the car jacked up & rotating the wheel by hand ? Does it still do it with the wheel off ?
Possibilities to check :
- caliper rubbing on inside of rim ?
- warped brake disc rubbing on brake pad as it rotates (or a pad not sitting square in caliper) ?
- wheel bearing not seated properly (eg. spinning on stub axle) ?
If it only does it with the weight of the car on the suspension, could be tyre rubbing on something ?
Whatever it is, there should be wear/rub marks in evidence somewhere.

Re: Leeroy's 1980 Lancer A73 resto project
Hmm, sounds like a brake issue. Davetrees is on the right track to possibilities. But it could also mean a seized caliper. That'll cause the brakes to drag as well. Add it to the list of things to check.
