My GE Scorpion

Post by webby »

This thing is the first car I ever bought myself so it was always going to be hard to sell it. It ended up being too hard, so I've decided to keep it and restore it slowly over the next couple of years, with a few mods on the way.
This is what I started with:
Image
This is the car how she sits now:
Image
Image
The only rust I'm worried about, pretty much the only rust on the car really:
Image
The only interior shot I've got:
Image

Plans are:
Mechanicals
High comp narrowblock 2.6
2L Jap 5-speed
10-bolt Jap diff with a Lancer EX GSR LSD
Starion front struts converted to coilovers
Starion brakes
Not sure on the rear suspension yet, I'll probably go with some King Superlows and Koni adjustables
Body
Standard restored with a respray in the original colour
Rims/Tyres
MA61 Supra 14x7 +8 Cast Alloy rims
Bridgestone RE001 Adrenaline 185/60R14
Interior
Starion front seats
Retrim in VN Commodore grey cloth (it's cheap lol)
KKR 330mm steering wheel
SAAS pedals and shifter knob
CD/MP3 player
Alpine 6x9's

As I'm currently unemployed it'll be a while before I can really get into it so it'll just be small stuff for a while
Cheers
Josh

I haven't seen a tidy example of one of these in years.
Good luck on the build.

In the meantime I'm just gonna go with another 4G52.
Soooo............Has anyone got a good one? I've got one here but it's very tired and in pieces, plus I don't have the $800 the local engine guy wants to rebuild it for me.
Anyway, I found a clutch with what Dad says looks like around 10k km on it and I'm assuming the lightened flywheel I had made earlier this year for my dead Magna will be useable so that's sorted.
Costs to get it to roadworthy:
Engine $800 or whatever it costs for another good one
Windscreen free (there's a good one on the parts car)
Brakes free (I'll use the new bits off the parts car)
Tyres $80/set of 4 (I'm good mates with the local wrecker :P )
Plus rego and insurance costs for 6 months ($262 for a 6 month CTP from QBE plus $248 rego fees from the RTA) so it's actually going to end up cheaper than re-registering the blue one I'm selling, a little over $700 in total if I find another good engine for cheap.
I want a 4G52 because I'm not so much a fan of the 2.6, it's not as revvy as the 2L and I just like 2L engines atm. Fuckin' hate SR20's though, so go figure :\
Cheers guys

This one's on hold again for now, until I get the blue one (which I WAS selling, until today lol) up, running and registered with the hi comp Astron I I've had planned for it for a while now.

Nah if I end up going it'll be in the blue one. Speaking of which, I took said blue car for an epic drive yesterday and today, did about 300km and found out when I got home that the brake master cylinder is leaking :( So the MC off this one will be getting pilfered for the blue car
It was good to put some km's on it for a change instead of it languishing in the driveway

Re: My GE Scorpion

I'm gonna bump this up 'coz I've gotta sell the blue one to help cover the rather large fines I've now got
The hi-comp motor that was planned for the blue car will now go in this one, along with a set of MA61 Supra rims with Z11 Soarer centre caps (purely because they look cooler :P ), Starion front struts, Starion brakes all 'round and about 3-4in of lowerage :D
It's actually fairly close to roady, it just needs the motor putting in, an uncracked windscreen and tyres as far as I know. Here's hoping nothing else pops up lol
Should end up fairly cheap too, I need gaskets and a set of rings for the motor (ebay is my friend :) ), I've got a windscreen in the parts car and new 195/70 tyres are something like $69ea from the local tyre joint and I'll only be putting 6 months rego on it so hopefully it comes to under a grand total.
I was supposed to be selling the parts car to a "mate" but he's been dicking me around so I'm gonna take what I need off it and let him have the rusty pile of busted shit that's left for the $50 he's already paid me.

Deets on the motor
TP Magna short motor, around 5,000km old, removed balance shafts
GH Scorpion head, Crow mild cam, standard exh. mani, 2.25in exhaust
34ADM
New head and exhaust studs ($50 from Orange Mitsubishi, mates rates ftw!)
That's basically it, hopefully I won't have too many problems with clearances and whatnot

I have yet again changed my mind. If no-one buys the blue GJ by new years I'm going to pull the motor and gearbox from that and drop them in this one. The motor and 'box are actually originally from the silver GH parts car so it SHOULD all line up.
It's all completely stock apart from a 2L cam but it should feel a lot better to drive than the GJ because of the GE's shorter diff ratio, I think it's around 3.9:1 or something like that.
In the meantime, it's gonna sit while I save some coinage so I can get stuck into it early next year.

I'm going to bump this up instead of making another thread. I'm not sure whether it's going to go ahead, but if things work out I'm going to be using the GJ as parts for this.
The past three years out in the weather have not been kind. Rust has started to bubble up around the back window and in the front guards, and there's a hole in the drivers door as shown in that old photo a few posts up. It's still in shedloads better nick than the blue one though, so I'm thinking that this is the way to go.
More photo's on the weekend.

Costs to get it to roadworthy:
Engine free, provided amgis_obrut can hold his motor until next weekend for me
Windscreen free (there's a good one on the parts car) I have no idea how to go about swapping windscreens, so I'm going to get o'briens to do it for me
Brakes free (I'll use the new bits off the parts car)
Tyres free, as I'll use the rims and tyres off the blue car
Rego will be in the vicinity of $830, plus $70-odd for a blueslip (I still owe money on the last one :$ ). I still have to go into the RTA and see about registering a car without the previous rego papers, but it's looking good :)

I now have an engine for this. Thanks Mick :)
It'll be in and running sometime in the next month or so. From there it's just a case of swapping the windscreen from the parts car and putting the wheels from the blue car on this one, then it'll be ready to go for rego for the first time since 1989 :)

Cheers man :)
They're standard GE Scorpion Alloys, 14x5.5 +24.

Speaking of wheels, I'm thinking 14x7 +-0 up front and 14x8 -10 on the back wearing 185/60 RE001's all 'round would sit nicely on this.

I've decided on wheels for this. Rota Aleica (Hayashi Sakura copy), 15x8 +0 and 15x9 -10. They've not actually been released yet, but that's fine as by the time I'm ready to buy a set they'll be out :)
I know I said over in the GJ thread that I hated copy wheels, but with a set of real Sakuras in 14x8 and 14x9 coming in at over $5k I think they're a decent alternative. They look pretty much exactly the same as the originals, the difference being the "petals" are slightly narrower and they're 15", whereas the real thing was only ever released in 14".
I'll probably end up getting a new set of Hayashi Streets in 14x8 and 14x8.5 and sell these off to some bandwagoneer anyway.

Nice choice of wheels. I'm trying to convince my wife that a set with the pink centres would look great on her white Scorp. Problem is she hates pink.

Dunno Dave... The pink is pretty cool  :P
According to the Rota rep that does sponsor sales over on AE86DC they're bringing them in in gold, pink, gunmetal, gloss black and silver. I'm thinking gunmetal, with 195/50 tyres on the 8's and 205/50 tyres on the 9's.

Got a to do list together, it looks something like this:
To do list for rego:
-put my wheels on
-clean up flywheel
-change throwout and spigot bearings
-bolt 2L in
-clean up the interior (wirings trashed and it's dirty as hell)
-replace windscreen
-bolt in struts+brakes+LCA's from the blue car, with Commodore shocks and cut Falcon springs (I know, I know...)
-put lowered springs (proper ones :P) from the rear of the blue car in this one, along with TP wagon shocks
-GH Scorpion grille with the grille piece removed (Current grille has been drilled for foglights, looks balls)

After rego:
-sidepipe :P
-34ADM, Redline filter
-fender mirrors, OG Galant Lambda if possible, ebay if not
-JDM Galant Lambda grille
-poly bushes
-Welded diff (anyone have spare 8-bolt axles? lol :P)
-Josh.

I also worked out where I want the car to end up.
-Front coilovers (shortened GH struts, HSD sleeve kit, 9kg springs, ST162 KYB AGX)
-shortened steering arms (by 18mm or so, extra lock :) )
-7kg rear springs, KYB AGX (not sure what from, everything I can think of uses a strut top type arrangement in the rear. Suggestions?)
-spooled R31 diff with Pintara 4.11's
-36mm bike carbs
-cam, I'm thinking of getting a custom grind made up to No.5 works specs
-shaved 3mm+ported M7 head
-2.2L high compression bottom end
-HD clutch
-lightened flywheel
-14x8 -6 Watanabe RS-8, 185/60 Bridgestone RE001 (street/drift), 15x6 +20 MZ11 Soarer rims, 195/50 Federal 595RS-R (track), (front)
-14x9 -19 Watanabe RS-8, 195/60 Yokohama C-Drive (street/drift), 15x6 +20 MZ11 Soarer rims, 195/50 Federal 595RS-R (track), (rear)
-black Sparco Sprint-V fixed back, driver
-tan Starion passenger seat
-Nardi Classic, 330mm
-maybe a bolt in half cage? (I intend to track this thing fairly regularly, a bit of drifting is on the cards as well)

Heavy spring rates shouldn't be a problem. They're 1kg heavier than what's recommended for an AE86, and this is ~150kg heavier than that (your average AE86 is ~1000kg), so they should be fine. I have no intention of stripping it out, either. The only weight reduction I'll be doing is the removal of the aircon and maybe strip the boot.

It's probably one of the hardest things I've had to do in my life, but I've come to the decision that she has to go. I just can't afford to do her justice, and I would rather she went to someone who can resurrect her to her former glory than let her sit in the paddock rotting while I get my life back on track.

Expect to be raped if you want the OG Hayashi's, even 14x7's are worth 60k yen a pair because they're just so damn rare :o
The replicas come in at about $900/set. They're 15" only (borderline for a Scorp imo, 14's would be better), 8" +10 minimum, 9" -10 max.
