Granny Sigma Turbo

Post by 4g54gemi »

Hi,
This is my 1980 Sigma. I am the second owner. I brought it from an old lady who owned it from new. It has a little over 100 000 km on it. I am currently putting a T60 Masterpower Turbo on it with a 390 blow through holley. I am going to be using a Carter 72 GPH and a Bosch 044 pump with a Mallory 4309 regulator. The motor is not going to be pushed very hard as it is stock apart from a 238@50 Camtech camshaft, and it also has the standard BW35 and convertor. Probably be running 10 PSI on this engine. I have got a 2.6l and a C4 Gearbox to go in after it has been on the road for a while and the turbo and fuel system sorted. Let me know what you think?

Thanks

Yeah the side pipe is only temporary lol gonna leave it sleeper for a while I think. Dunno about power yet. Will run it at the drags once its sorted, hoping to have it on the road in about 1-2 months. Id be happy with somewhere in the 15's lol (sounds bad i know) but I'm not going to be pushing it,I think the engine would be fine more worried about the gearbox. When the 2.6 is done hopefully it will go 115mph and over at the track.
thanks

Very cool car mate - I love the sleeper look! I wonder how laggy it will be - that turbo looks pretty big for a 2litre and the auto will be an interesting factor. Back in the day I ran water meth injection and 15psi into a stock 2 litre Turbo GH - my first trip out I ran mid 16's, then with some mapping of the dizzy and a nice cool night, managed a 15.1. It ran the factory 5 speed back then. Keep us posted on your output and times! :)

Yeah I think its gonna be a laggy bitch lol. I'll probably have to turn it to at least 6-6500rpm to make the turbo of any use and who knows how the bottem end and 100000k head gasket is gonna like it :| .

Your going to have some issues mate! That BW35 will last about 20 minutes.. so go bloody easy when it's running! Also blowing through a Holley like that wont work unless you equalize the pressure in the float bowls. If you decide to try use more fuel pressure then the floats wont close the needle and seat! Also dont use brass floats when you turn up the boost as they will crush and fuel will also start coming out the sides of the shafts.
And that turbo will probs come in @ like..10,000rpm! But give it a crack anyway..your half way there already!

I know the borgy isnt going to last that long hence why Ive got a c4 and adaptor plate to go in when I have the money to build the box and buy a convertor (custom convertor alone will be $1000+) I dont thrash cars so when the box starts to slip under boost I know to take it easy until the c4 is ready. The carb has been modded, boost referenced shafts, nitrophyl floats, 4309 mallory 1:1 return type regulator so fuel pressure stays 7-10psi above boost. I expect the turbo to come onto boost at around 4500rpm. It is basically the same size as a gt35R. Thanks for the concern anyways mate :) .

Well bloody good to see you took it all into account and just didn't go at it blindly... There is the BW 40 option which has more clutches and a bigger sprag in it if the 35 pops too early. Throw a tranny cooler in there somewhere and your reliability will be better also...and you could fit a starion boost retard/vac advance unit to the dizzy if it pings under boost.

Yeah I have got a bw40 aswell but unsure what its like, id say if it stuffs up I'll just wate and build the c4. Im just going to lock the standard dissy up and use the vacum advance directly into the manifold so it has plenty of advance when crusing and as soon as theres a smell of boost its at my locked setting. I have actually done a blow thru holley setup before on a rotary and it worked quiet well so I hope this one turns out the same. It seems to me you just have to play alot until its right and then your set and ofcourse using a wideband, (I have a innovate wideband to go in aswell). Thanks

sounds good and doesn't sound like you are reving it very high either. so boost before 10,000 rpm might be possible hahaha.

Ive put a fitting into the pressure side of the water pump ( directly behind the original waterpump bypass hose, see pics above) and running around the back of the block and back into the rear of the manifold feeding the rear of the head with cool water from the radiator. Just wondering if anyone has done something similar? Would this help cooling? I think it should, just other peoples thoughts would be helpful. Thanks

Just an update took it to the drags tonight. Ran 16.85 @98mph on 14psi. 98 mph indicates if it would take off it would probably run 13's and more mph prob around 102-3mph . 3 second 60fts and coming onto boost at 330ft (4000rpm) just doesnt cut it lol. Still standard convertor and gearbox so obviously theres a spooling issue. 11:1 afrs and 12 deg total timing at 14psi.

that adaptor is going to be a major restriction... get 2 boost guages and connect one above and below it and see how much boost youre loosing..
cut the carby flange off the manifold and weld on a holley one

cheers,

Bit of an update went to track again last night ran 15.66 @ 108mph on 22psi. Still standard convertor and 3.23 diff, so still slow till 330ft lol. Need 3.7's and a 4500rpm convertor and would probably run low 12's to high 11's. Thanks
