Hey, V8 Lexus Galant Build, Hope You Like
Hey, been away in a cave for a while and i am part way through my Galant - Lexus V8 swap.
Its a 1979 galant E, been thinking for a while what to put into it and i just couldn't make my mind up, so i decided to go a bit crazy and put a v8 in it. I looked at numerous v8s, 350's ,308's, 254's but none really had what i was looking for, they were all heavy power lacking anchors.
So i asked a few people and they recommended the Lexus v8, Light with all alloy block, plenty of torque, and heaps of hp which i liked, but i didn't want a bar of the wiring and all that bollocks.
Anyway i got talked into it and here is is bit of it so far.
Hope You Like, Im Welcome To Any Help/Advice anyone can give.
Will Be More Picts Soon
Thanks Richie, Auckland, New Zealand

Yep. That's a 1UZ.
Can you give us any more details on what is required to fit it? I can see that it is a front sump, but what engine mounts, headers, etc are you planning on using?
I've wanted to fit one into a Scorpion for a while but don't have the money to spare at the moment.

He calls it a Galant, because that's what it's badged as in New Zealand.
speedster694 probably wonders why you ISKA8 call yours a Sigma...

Re: Hey, V8 Lexus Galant Build, Hope You Like
Thanks Guys for the feedback.
Yes it is a Toyota/Lexus v8 4.0L 1UZ-FE.
As 75wagon Said this was New Zealand assembled and is badged as a Galant E.
To fit it was rather easy, had to take brake booster off to fit and that's about it. I have some pictures of the mounts and stuff.
As for the headers, i have not got them on the engine at the moment because i will have to remove engine, fit headers then put back in to see if they are going to be clear of the chassis rails and the steering coulomb. If they don't fit i will probably just have to get some dirty short log type headers for now. Basically i just want to get it running and all sweet before i go for custom extractors and all the bollocks.
It weighs about 175Kg so you get a fairly high power to weight ratio with its 200kw (260HP) and 363NM of torque.
At the moment i have the engine in and mounted
Followed by bell housing
Lightened billet flywheel
Heavy duty exedy clutch
W55 Gearbox from supra Mounted
Here are some pictures.
Followed By w55 5spd out of supra.
Gearbox Mount
Beautiful fit between the sway bar and strut, No mods here.
Shifter For Gearbox went right into original hole, bit of luck involved there.
Hard to see but that shows the power steering thing and the distance i have for extractors.
And yes i am going to remove engine, steam clean, sand, and respray engine bay.
If anyone has any ideas on suspension, brakes, diffs that would be a great help.
cheers

Thats scary how everything seems to be lining up...
Just one thing though... have you changed/altered the engine cross member??
-Its a lot different to the one in my GH
Your engine mounts seems to sit near on horizontal, where mine are pointing in and would be near on a 35 degree angle ?
Love it though...
Nick.

If you look closely at the pics (especially the view from underneath) you can see that the top of the 'dome' has been cut off and a flat section welded on.

Re: Hey, V8 Lexus Galant Build, Hope You Like
I think if I was going to be jamming a V8 into something that was never meant to have one in it, (Sigma or Galant) I would be looking for a Rover 3.5 Efi V8.
They are cheap
They are Efi
They have a massive range of hot up parts
They are all alloy - so wouldn't weigh much more than a Astron anyway, if not less
There would be room in a Sigma for twin turb's
And so on, lol

Re: Hey, V8 Lexus Galant Build, Hope You Like
I Have to work on an old rover with a twin su'ed 3.5 v8 i dont like working on them, i also work on the 1uz and as far as performance goes there are a mile ahead of the pack
they also are of all alloy construction so light and powerful and there is a mountain of performance parts available, was thinking a 302 windsor for it being a tighter degreed v8 (more room) but as you said too heavy!! so i think im going to go for the 1uz.

1uz-fe are a far superior engine than a rover v8, they are quad cam and all alloy, massive tourque and reliability and a fair few hot up goodies available.
BUILT NOT BROUGHT BY ALGIE.
Re: Hey, V8 Lexus Galant Build, Hope You Like
If you do indeed have a W55, it's not from a Supra. W55's are a Celica 'box, Supras had the W58 (MA45-MA61-MA70-JZA80 non turbo), the R154 (JZA70R) or the Getrag 6-speed (JZA80 TT)
The W5x 'boxes will shred themselves behind a 1UZ unless you drive like a grandma, so get yourself an R154 and save yourself some pain down the track.
I like it by the way, nice work

Re: Hey, V8 Lexus Galant Build, Hope You Like
I wouldn't call the 253 a small V8 fair enough it is small capacity, and a great little engine too.shuggy wrote:what other small V8s are there??

But physically it is a bigger engine than a small block chev or windsor.
I was considering Rover V8 for a build until a friend put a 220kw version of the 1UZ in his E30 (85 3 series) BMW with a T5 behind it.
Simply a fantastic engine and waaayy over engineered all alloy, quad cam, 6 bolt main bearings, off the shelf supercharger kits available.
Sounds awesome and absoloutely flies,
I'm convinced
