RPW now Turbo'd Galant Updates for those interested
its been a continual work in progress, from naturally aspirated test bed, Ie how far can we take it to the turbo / automatic route.
The car is nearly ready and should finally be racing this season at the Motorplex in Perth.
below are some links for those interested
1st link is from MOGWA website which is a running story on the car since 2005

Thos links show photos from our naturally aspirated days, to photos of the turbo setup.
There is a link also below from Youtube wth the vehicle idling from the other day.

I wanted to update these forums as at least you guy's and girls, are ones who woudl appreciate this vehicle and the work put into it over the years that many others wouldn't.
If you have any questions ask away.

Re: RPW now Turbo'd Galant Updates for those interested
Long time between updates on our galant.
We have been struggling for over a year now trying to isolate a transmission problem (In hindsight we should have jsut removed the box, competlety stripped it down and then woudl have foudn the problems straight away)
Instead we tried to track it down piecemeal thinking it was a valve body issue. We bought a new billet transbrake / valve body and tested that in the Torqueflight 904 box but had problems with gears.
So now that we have isolated it to a phsyical issue inside the box, we are fitting up a complete stock 2nd hand Torqueflight 904 with the billet manualised transbrake valve body to enable us to finally tune the car.
Meanwhile i will be rebuilding the box with all new billet parts from the states to make it bulletproof and capable of handling in excess of 700hp at the flywheel.
So with luck we should have some dyno, more youtube info out in the next month on the car.
Hopign to have the trans built within 3 months and then finally get it back down the drags, and get some times down. Then get serious, and build a real motor with some high boost, race fuel and get into thos 10's and 9's.

Re: RPW now Turbo'd Galant Updates for those interested
New update - its alive again.
We fitted up a stock 2nd hand TF904 trans and stall converter so the car is driveable again. I just drove it up and down the street and its loud - gotta love it.
My new trans parts are due next week with enough goodies to hold 900hp, not that I will be making tha tmuch but good to have the security.
Looking to get it onto the dyno for the weekend and start sorting it out. Will definitly get some video of it on the dyno and upload to youtube.
Been working back every night for the last 3 weeks to get it going again. Gotta lov the reverse manuel valve body gear shifting with the B&M unit - throws you back in the seat every time I change gears.
Im starting to get excited again with the vehicle been too many years sitting around. Time to get it back on the race track and get some serious numbers down.
Next step is to start building a serious engine and do some upgrades to the fuel injection system but one step at a time.

Re: RPW now Turbo'd Galant Updates for those interested
Well we ran it up on the dyno and everythign appeared to be working well until the transmission died on us. Combination of old transmission, no idea of how many km it has done, load from teh setup on the car and I need to redesign the oil cooling for the transmission.
BUt it managed a very credible 230hp at only 6 psi boost at the wheels and only up to 6000 rpm with a smallish camshaft so overall we are happy. This was made with very conservative and flat ignition timing I wasn't even trying to make power was just testing it as a run through to make sure we had no revving issues under load like we used to. (I fixed up some loose plugs on the crank angle sensor)
My new parts for the transmission arrives next week - parts capable of handling 900hp so I know we will never break it. From there rebuild up th enew trans and fit up the new thermo fan operated transmission cooler, and we will try again.

Breaking parts is never a good thing and generally ruins an otherwise great day.
Glad to hear you have it sorted and look forward to reading what sort of time it can put down

Re: RPW now Turbo'd Galant Updates for those interested
Not bad at all! What boost and fuel is the build designed for?
Re: RPW now Turbo'd Galant Updates for those interested
This current motor is a hybrid Naturaly aspirated / turbo engine so its only good for around 15 psi maximun. Should be good for our plan of around 350hp at the wheels. The capacity of this engine is only 2400cc.
The proper motor I build will be back out to 2.7 litre and that will be setup for around 500hp at the wheels - well and truly enough to propell it into the low 10's which is our plan. Theres a lot of work to do around the car first to make it stable and consistant so horsepower is not a huge issue for us

Re: RPW now Turbo'd Galant Updates for those interested
An update for those interested been working hard on the car for the last couple of years.
Just finished a heap of work on the car in preparation for the 2011/12 series of drag racing.
I finished replacing the dash with some flat aluminium and fitted a Haltech IQ3 display dash with some new toggle switches for the important things, included a rewire of complete vehicle electrics to simplify things.
The IQ3 is reading all the data from the ECU in one screen and one plug so I get to see the real data as well as no need for any other gauges or wiring etc. It has a built in shift light as well which looks great. Will take some photos soon.
The TF904 transmission is being built now with all new USA sourced billet parts up to 900hp worth. New torque converter 3500 - 4000rpm stall is being made now as well.
With luck hoping to have it up and running with the new transmission fitted in 4-6 weeks time.
Starting to get very excited about the car again

Plans are to run initiall flat 11.00 to remain in super street until I build a full roll cage, then build a proper motor and drop into low 10's. Thats where I will stay and focus on building extreme reliability into the vehicle for consistancy.
I am working on the idea of building a new vehicle for myself, getting a rail car body with a 2 speed powerglide, and building a 1000hp 6G75 Twin turbo motor. My 5 year plan.

Re: RPW now Turbo'd Galant Updates for those interested
Been a while between posts. Updates recently
Custom billet torque converter is nearly finished, expensive piece costing me $1800.00 by itself. Its a full billet roller bearing 4500 rpm stall unit. Can't finish the box till that is done as we had to get the splines setup for hte custom input shaft on it.
Meanwhile i have finished the oil cooler for the engine and have mounted up the new oil cooler with its own seperately controlled thermo fan for hte auto transmission oil. Once the box is in I just need to finish hooking up some oil lines.
All taking longer than expected, but suits me as my budget is getting tighter and tighter. Didn't expect to cost that much for the torque converter but becuase we have to use such a small diameter unit to get the stall we need, there's no other choice.

Re: RPW now Turbo'd Galant Updates for those interested
More updates, unfortunately beginning to wish I hadn't gone for a torque flight transmission, turning into more of a headache than anything else.
Due to the size converter we are running, for a 5000rpm stall, its down to something like a 7" converter. This in conjunction with the 20mm longer USA Billet input shaft we are running, has mean't we are now going to have to make an 20mm engine spacer to provide more "depth" inside the transmission housing for the torque converter to bolt up, all purely because of the torque converter.
Means going to have to remake a new support bracket for the transmission to mount it further back, get the tailshaft shortened and probably have to remake the aluminium cover inside the car where we cut out room for the auto transmission.
Other alternative was to move the engine further forward but that means having to redo the thermo fans, engine mounts and get a new front sway bar made to clear the large harmonic balancer.
Grrr - headaches its a conspiracy not to allow me to race this season.
ONly positive is if we do move the transmission back, it helps centre the weight (Only slightly) as that sucker weighs a fair bit.
Anyway hopefully new news in the next 3 - 4 weeks once we get the transmission and torque converter back and then get the spacer made. Just goign to send out a modified bell housing spacer plate, and get an aluminium spacer water cut. Keep things nice and light.

I have my now completed Torque Flight 900hp capable transmission finished, a 4750 rpm stall converter (Built to highest specificatiosn available) and we just finished machining the spacer plate to shift the transmission back 20mm to work with the longer input shaft / torque converter.
Hopefully next week will begin the first fitments to the vehicle and then work out how much to shorten the tailshaft, make hte new gearbox support mounts.
Starting to get excited again.

Re: RPW now Turbo'd Galant Updates for those interested
To be honest no new pics of teh transmission - just looks like a normal torqueflight and the same with the converter.
No plan on fiberglass guards athis moment - we already have the fiberglass bonnet, just want to get the car running consistantly first and then focus on times later.

Cool, I would be intersted in a pair of guards if you do make some molds up. Do you have a mold for the bonnet? If you do, are you interested in selling them?

Re: RPW now Turbo'd Galant Updates for those interested
I am a good fibreglasser but don't have the time to make molds or good panels to make molds from. If you have molds I can knock out parts.
I would also be interested if the molds are for sale

Re: RPW now Turbo'd Galant Updates for those interested
Sorry I didnt keep the moulds, I sent off the origonal bonnet to a fiberglasser adn they made it off that. I never got the moulds.
But saying that, if there were the coupe boot lid, and front guards I would be interested in getting some as well. Anything to get the weight down in the vehicle.
But if we can, lets start another discussion on that so we can get more coupe owners interested.

I can get a loan of the moulds not to keep mind you there is not much weight difference in using the glass one's and steel that is why I used all steel when I did all the panel work on my car and the fact I could not find a reliable fiberglasser.

Re: RPW now Turbo'd Galant Updates for those interested
Well the galant is up and running again. Transmission has been fitted and we have it currently up and running on the "small turbo cam" this moment to make it easier to get things sorted out.
Going onto the dyno in the next few days for some nice tuning and then our plan is to hit the Motorplex drag racing complex on Wednesday next week for some break down runs, nothing too fast but just start sorting the car out.
If all goes well, then we will the following week go back down and push it up hard and try some 5000 rpm transbrake launches.
If all goes well, then we transplant the "Big turbo Cam" back into the car, tune it up properly for maximun power, get the NOS tuned as well and then try again at the track for some serious times. See if we can hit that 10 sec time.
Other work is we replaced the old red OMP seat which was had badly deterioted and replaced it with a fiberglass backed seat and new 4 point harness seat belts.
Some minor wiring to be finished with the addition of the wide band O2 sensor for permanent datalogging and fine tuning. Just need to finish off the MXL datalogger screen so it also shows the afr's for quick visual checking.
Getting quite excited.
Oh - my tyres should be here next week as well. We had to specially order some 165R14 front runner tyres, for the front. They only normally make these in 15" but we get some special cross plys from Antique Tyres which were designed for Mini's. This is perfect as we can have the baby tyres on the front, but retain our 14" tyre size across the vehicle which keeps everything looking balanced. Now I just need to find some baby 14" rims.
Anyway hopefully will have some video's soon of the car on the dyno with the "small cam".
