Brake upgrade

Post by aussiedave »

Just wanting to know what upgrade you can do to the 1968 colt brakes. The discs that are standard on mine look very small and i dont know if they will hold up when im racing it. Any help would be great.
Thanks

i have never seen one in real life ,so we need to work out what it is compatable with?
fare chance its the same as the la lancer or ga galant or some other early mitsi so from there we can work out a upgrade mate!

if any one has a lancer/galant hub and disc that Dave could borrow to do a test fit. aparently they have the same size in the bearings. not sure what needs to be done to to fit the caliper

looks like the early l300 set up before thay went six stud
anyways mate do you have verniers to measure the stub axel?
or the expensive way i can sent you a la and a sigma hub and you can try to se which one fits
BUT it wont tell you clearances until the rotor and caliper then wheel are on !
hmm lets try to find out bearing sizes for now ,and we can go from there!

Re: Brake upgrade

ok....hope this helps

outer Bearing internal measure 19mm
inner bearing internal 25mm
stub axle from base to thread 64mm

the std disc is 22.5cm across and 8.5mm thick

taking the brake caliper off to measure....................held on with bolts and nuts and you have to remove a brake line to get the caliper off

MATT
NOTE: my measuring device is as old as the Colts and may not be 100% acurate

Re: Brake upgrade

well here is the bad news the stub axel on the la is different again 17.4mm and 27mm ids
so now the next question is
what is the od of the two bearings and seal ?
how bigger brakes do you guys want to run and what stud pattern do you want?
are there class restrictions (parts of the eira )or go nuts ?
what is the stud pattern on the diff?

the diff is the same 5 stud set up. early lancer diff's bolt in but you have to pump the rear guards or cut a little bit off the ends of the diff
i have had a quick look for some more modern measuring devices to do a re check but i can not find them.

for me it is something i have been toying with for a while.......to change to a 114.something( datto) stud pattern would allow a choice of wheels, the std 13X4 wheels with a 5 stud pattern are hard to find and the way the back wheel hides in the rear makes width a big problem.

how does the disc connect to the Hub on an LA( how many bolts)these have 5.

the option i went for was better linings, i got some datsun 1200 pads and cut them down to fit.

Re: Brake upgrade

la are a 4 stud 114.3 same as datto's
but i dare say it wouldnt be a upgrade in stopping ,just easier to get parts for
but the best way out of this is see if we cant mix a match some bearing into a hub
but if you want to upgrade the stopping performance then go to starion hubs or make billet hubs to suit what
you want to do

Thanks for the info guys im not real good when it comes to brakes, im basically after better brake setup for stopping as im racing it on tarmac and just wasnt to sure if what i have would be good enough. So a Starion setup would fit? or would it need to be made to fit.

Re: Brake upgrade

we still need to work out more sizes first
maybe with a mix and match of bearings it might go on
but the question is what rules are you bound by in your class of racing ,and what size wheels do you
want to use "od" 15 or 13

could just about use your feet lol,
i would imagine galant brakes would be plenty
sigma would have it pushing the driver through the screen.
good luck with it

by the way, where are you going to be racing it?

how is the disc fixed to the bearing hub and how thick is the disc from the rear of disc where it bolts to the hub

GC GD galant (dunno about ga gb) LA LB LC lancer and GE sigma share the same bearings

Ford transit mk2 bearing hubs fit on ge sigma stubs complete with bearing seals so will also fit galant and lancer

castlemain rod shop do a conversion kit to fit ford falcon disc's to mk2 transit stubs using a bearing sleeve this kit will also adapt falcon discs to GE stubs also converts the stub to use holden size bearings
GH Sigma, 16" Mesh wheels, sports steering wheel and a V8 exhaust
