Interesting Choice

Do they look as though they will bolt straight in?
If not, then why?
Im all for trying something different, but they arent common anymore, and old as hell.

i think if i change the tops and fit a GE balljoint they might work

reason im thinking bout these is i need a vented disc and uprated strut/spring for when i fit a 302 and a hemi centura front end would be about the same weight as a clevo gh front end, plus they have ford pcd

Hey,
Yep ive seen it done a few years back on a GH sedan with a 302 Windsor conversion, had a shortened ford 9 inch in the back and the guy put the Centura struts in so he could run a Falcon 5 stud pattern and discs all round (he had XR6 rims fitted). He had an early Fairlane as a donor car and was going to a V8 conversion to a Cortina but couldnt find a good one or could only find a wagon something like that...

Sorry i cant give you too many details or even photos but it was about 8-9 years ago and ive killed numerous brain cells since then, i remember it been a very tidy setup and having a half a chubby for about a month over seeing a V8 sigma (i was 17 at the time).

but wont be valved for the extra weight

I would think that the 3 litre Shyline motor would be at least the same weight as a 2.6

And the silhouette version had uprated suspension.

Getting back to the Centura 6 struts, they would be the same stud patten as Falcon. I think the 4's were 4 stud. But I could be wrong :$

yes but a cleveland is only 35kg more than a 245

a sigma with a cleveland would almost have the same front end weight and a 245 centura

My engineer wants me to fit a strut insert /spring combo that will be suited to the front end weight of the car, i could easily go and get something made but if anything every craps out i'd need to get it made again

If i use something oem i can just replace it with oem

Wouldn't using Commodore inserts and heavy duty springs in the stock stuts have the effect your engineer wants?

Then the engineer would probably need to do calculations to determine if the stub axles & bearings are suited to the load - which would cost bulk money.

If the OP can demonstrate that he's using front end components designed for a similar load it's simpler for the engineer to sign off, and cheaper for the OP.

thats another option

Commo inserts would be valved right, i could use these with off the shelf centura springs all on the sigma struts and meet the engineers requests, and then i could use the front brakes of my cortina (changing to Strange set up) and have the vented discs with ford 5x114.3 pcd

OR i could just use the entire Centura strut and brakes and be done with it in one move

I'll be starting on the front once i have finished the 5 stud lsd diff conversion

started stuffing about with these centura struts today

Well the complete strut/brake setup wont fit a sigma with out major work, the disc will fit the sigma strut but needs a rear bearing spacer, discs are impossible to get making the conversion a no go

So i abandoned the idea of fitting the complete strut or the brakes and started looking at other routes

The Centura strut insert is a drop in for a Sigma strut, the insert body is the same length but the ram is 30mm shorter (good if you have shorter springs)

So im going to use the centura inserts springs and top spring plates on the sigma struts

I have given you lot a bit of a bum steer with my last post as the sigma insert is from a GJ not a GH
the GH insert has a longer body than the GJ though both will interchange if you use the correct retaining nut

I used the Centura insert in the GH strut and the GJ retaining nut for a perfect fit without the need for spacers

Ok top to bottom, GH Sigma, KB Centura, GJ sigma

Image

GJ retaining nut on left vs GH retaining nut

Springs, left to right

KB Centura, GH SE, GH Turbo

Image

And this is the strut brake combo that im using for my clevo conversion, its a real hybrid and was a dead set head frak to sort out

it consists of

STRUTS>

GH Strut

Centura Insert

GJ retaining nut

Centura spring

Centura top spring plate

GH strut top

BRAKES

XA falcon hub/disc

HQ Wheel bearings

WB Caliper

Falcon hoses, have now been swapped for rear disc sigma hoses

TE Cortina to Holden caliper mount, you can either get these from CRS or just make them from some 10mm plate

Will this handle any better or is it just to take the weight?

Sorry if thats a dumb question but I know bugger all about suspension.
dunno what it'll handle like, but yeah its mainly for the weight

Very interesting thread - nice to see someone experimenting.
My guess is that it will sit too high, and have a stiff ride, but I hope I'm wrong :) (not really being a Sigma chap)

Its not much stiffer than the std setup, Overall strut height is 40mm shorter now, but still sits higher that the std sigma setup but should come down with the weight of a Cleveland,

Good on you Mick!
hope it works for you.
Wasnt the point to go 5 stud also?

And now you have stripped all your stuff out of the Corty??
Or was the Corty always getting new gear?

Yeah 5 stud was the main thing, it will all work

have only pulled the front brakes off the Cortina, didnt like them that much anyway, to bulky and heavy goingf to fit some custom alloy hubs light weight 8mm thick discs and strange calipers save about 50% weight over the old setup
