Cracked Strut Top - GA galant

Post by gaPhil »

Hey guys

I just bought a GA galant and it has cracks in the strut tops.

Any idea on where i could find replacements that aren't like $500
Or alternatively does anyone know of ways they can be repaired?

Cheers

I can't think that they would cost all that much as all the galant strut tops are the pretty much the same as the ge and gh sigma. And if they were to cost you that much you'd be better off just going for a set up k-mac adjustable strut tops.

Welcome to the site fellow GA owner!
I've never heard of the strut tops cracking - I have GA that was used for rallying and the strut tops are fine.
Do you mean the rubber bits? - they often have cracks. If so, as above. Just go down the wreckers and hunt around the GA-GD Galants of GE/GH sigmas or scorpions. Take home the best set.
Or post here in the WANTED section.

Sorry i should made that a bit clearer.

I meant had anyone seen any other then the adjustable sets.

I haven't had a full look at it yet, but I am pretty sure it is just the rubber part on the top.
So wreckers is the best option?

Thanks for the help!

Very common.
Personally, unless its got play in it, I'd leave it as is.
Sometimes the rego folk can can get a bit worried.
If this looks likely to happen, I'm told  that some people just smooth the whole rubber bit over with black windscreen sealer.

Yep, seen others do this. I know they are still available in the states new if you really must have new ones. I bought a new set from there, maybe do a dodge colt search on google or ebay worldwide. I couldn't find any new, locally.
I may have a spare 2nd hand set lying around though if you are desperate, or just try the wreckers. Anything GH sigma or earlier will work for you

I just got new strut mounts for my LC coupe via Hyundai- '86 to 89 Excel uses same strut top mounts as the lancer, and I'd assume that the Galant would accept them. I've got Sigma struts in, and the strut top mount is the same. It's the 4 bolt one. You can also get the old one's re-rubbered apparently. Check with your nearest suspension guy for info. The Hyundai parts set me back $90 each, or for about $180 each you can get hi-po units from the States via Ebay Motors US.

hey Phil how are you going with this?
Mate have you checked out the wreckers down at Budgiewoy? (south of Swansea)
and this could be good for Tandanus also.

I was down there last weekend and they have a couple of Sigmas, a couple of Scorps, a Cordia GSR, a LC Lancer and a Galant which i think was a GB from the taillights?...and the majority of panels are pretty straight, and interior looks ok too.

Might be worth a look for some random spares also??!!
They are Way down the very back,
They must hide them there for us ;)

How would you post an arch mold without it being stuffed by the time it got to you?
