How strong are the t56 gearbox and what car do they come out of?

They are very strong and they come standard in newer v8 commodores

I hope you're willing to fabricate a whole new trans tunnel, T56's are farking HUGE

In a word, no. Not unless you cut the tunnel out and fabricated a whole new one.

T56 is on the bottom, the other trans is a T5.
T56 by itself

And a TKO-600 for good measure.

Maybe, if you got happy with the hammer. They're a similar size to an R154.
TKO-600 is a considerably stronger version of the T5 5-speed, dunno what it's out of but you can get them for $1800 new from Tremec vs. $3k for a T56.
If you're really keen to go with a T56/TKO you can go to a race fabrication joint and get them to weld in a bigger tunnel, it'll cost you though.
