what diff do you have in your galant?

Post by shuggy »

i want to do a heavy duty diff conversion in my coupe in next 6 months, i have read about the patrol diff that danturbolancer did, and stealth's ford borgy, and a few here and there - but just wondering what is a relatively low effort conversion for strength?
im swayin towards the ford 28 spline 3.23 that stealth mentioned in another topic, but pros/cons?
also saw the patrol diff 6 stud, could get it re studded for 4/5 stud maybe? i want disk rear so not sure hey.

just need opinions please :)

also whats the deal with conversion to coil springs? i read you can get underbody strut mounts so you can have a coilover somewhere.. true or false?

if this makes no sense sorry in advance, i really have no clue about rear suspension..

cheers

i got a galant locker in mine
never broken anything yet, and believe me it has been punished over the years.
for what they are they are quite tuff

i am having a commy borgwarner cut down for it tho. i imagine they are the same as the ford unit.
i decided that way due to the number of different ratios around for them, and the fact you can buy parts for them
the factory lsd is a piece of shit, so a mini spool is in order

another reason i went the commy option was for massive brake upgrade - HSV items are a bolt on
and lets face it, the car can never be "over braked" :D

its a bit of stuffing about to make it fit - for one its coil spring, so it needs leaf saddles made and welded on, needs a few mm chopped out of it, therefore so do the axles - its around a $1000 bolt in conversion

Galantman runs a nissan C200 diff in his galant. almost a bolt in swap... ALMOST. its a little bit wider than galant diff, but dont need any shortening to fit. Big rear brakes, massive axles in it, but limited to uncool ratios.

it comes down to how much u wanna spend, and what you want the upgrade for.
anything can be made fit with a grinder and a welder

yeah trueee
its a fair way off so just gettin stuff lined up - but a grand is ok for me i think if its not for a while
and my galant diff is getting loose, same thing happened in my previous one. you know that little tap/knock noise it makes when you change gears or push the clutch in when under load as slow speeds?
so not sure what to do

You could go Hilux 2wd diff........ Being leaf spring as well it is just a matter of moving spring saddles to suit. Not sure on whether you would need it shortened or not (hilux is 8mm wider overall than sigma) so depends on the width of the Gal. If it is too wide you could always pump out the guards...... Heaps of diff ratios available, dime a dozen for them, big axles, plenty of disc brake conversions available (ask anyone in rallying), and to top it off Hilux 5 stud (4x2) is the same as Ford 5 stud if you want to run 5 stud.

Well, after seeing karl's gal with the scorp rear end in it, ended up doing the same. Fairly easy swap, made easier if it is from a GH scorp (handbrake will connect straight up!)
Nice and strong, no need to shorten. only thing i have to do... take it out and weld it up!

As said though... comes down to what "you" are wanting.

hey shuggy i do have a jig for shortening these b/w housings
but its for the la ,and i only have to shorten one axel as the factory
short side is my long side
and yeah cheap as parts you can buy a mini spool for $120
all gears ratio's available and you can upgrade to 31 spline but then
customs axels mine cost me $900 with lifetime warrenty(havent even marked one
yet 8-)
see if you got a lancer you be on a home run :blah:

is this for your coupe or your sedan?
so are you needing it for just general driving or for taking it down the strip/track?
if your taking it down the 1/4 then you'll want something with a decent ratio like high 3's or low 4's
but then if your just doing general driving/highway driving you'll want low ratio.
i'm running the standard vr commy b/w (3.08 ratio single spinner )with shortened axles etc but am looking at upgrading to a mini spool with higher diff gears in the future just so it takes off that little bit better.

hey dean
in my green car i run a 3.23 as its quicker than 3.5 ,3.9 and 4.11 thats with 305kw
it all depends on the torque curve of your engine and set up
now saying that its only like .3 of a second but the 3.23 are better for driving
its less likely to break loose ,but when its does look out

yeah, well i've only got 175 horsepower lol

my mate upgraded to 4.11's in his vr daily and he really noticed the difference.

in the future (distant) if i upgrade and go turbo or supercharged then i can see what your saying, but for now, it will be the best option (if my research is correct).

correct me if im wrong stealth because your knowledge is far superior to mine haha

yeh im lookin for every day use but wil probs do 1/4 once or twice for the keck of it so want under 3.8, but no less than 3.2..
i wonder if there is a diff that has a short side the same length as the galant so i can just cut the long side?
hmmm
haha there are just so many options

remember that your car is a good 250kg lighter than a ute or 350kg
lighter than a sedan (commonwhre that is)
higher ratio's leed to more wheel spin which is cool man
unless you cutting skids but it will still do that
like ive said my car weighs 930kg finished with the six
and 305kw's 3.23 rears and 16" 225 's and i can break loose in
forth gear no worries :| fifth to if i side step it
with 4.11" i didnt even use first and second
but its your car and you know your driving style and how it will be used
so go with what you think

in your opinion then stealth, what would be the best option for me?
keep the 3.08 or go up to the 3.23? (would it really make that much difference?)
and are the b/w lsd's worth the cash or would you go a mini spool which is what i am tossing up?

thanks in advance,
Dean.

mate i tried all the lsd,s even broke a couple of cusco's
and then bought a romac full spool and am in love with it
i dont know what the holden six would be like as the mitsi
twincam six's are snappy as and rev like hell so i get away with
more, your engine is dosile ? yeah (being a gm product ,ewe)
so maybe go 3.45 or 3.7 but the higher you go it will suck juice
bad to

yeh well i wil get the car tomoro and have a good look thru it and i will have to talk to someone about emissions and what i have to do if i stick an 04' 4g64 in it (side impact bars, support, emissions etc) because i was thinkin supercharger and it is gona be relitively hard to pass emissions with a charged 4g64 carby engine..
so will get it have a look thru and decide weather to make a daily, cruiser, show or strip car.

Hey Stealth what gearbox are you running?
Dean has the Commo 5 spd,
If you are running a different box and different ratios,
wouldnt the ratios of Deans box determine what ratio diff would be best?

Also Dean dont forget, if you just want to have abit of fun, but still drive on the street, EVL076 has his car set up for pure Drag race purposes and occasional street duties, and Stealths is basically the same drag or circuit...

Spool or locked diffs are AWEFUL on the street!!
they put unnecessary stress on your axles, bearings, wheel studs, tyres, and Gearbox everytime you turn a corner.

If you just want to go in a straight line, all good, want to reverse park in a tight busy street, friggin terrible!

Just my opinion

Dan, very good points there.
i am a bit like yourself, basically just want some good reliable fun in a weekend car that will take some punishment.
i have been told that the b/w lsd's are not even worth it by plenty of people and that you basically have 2 choices.
single spinner or a locker of some sort.

like i said before i will be doing more engine work in the future, (but for now i'm working on aesthetics).
the diff in it is a mate of mines old one and it has had a hard life (his old commonwhore got a floggin).
so i would like to upgrade and make it reliable.

the gearbox ratio's for my car are-
* 1st: 3.25:1 * 2nd: 1.99:1 * 3rd: 1.29:1 * 4th: 1.000:1 * 5th: 0.72:1

Shuggy - sorry to steal your thread mate

my g/box is a w58 supra box
and yeah lockers arnt good on the street BUT im registering it like that
dan if you set your lsd to duel wheel under heavy load its a locker anyway
due to the light weight car!
and dean theres another option for you a ARB air locker that would be
the best comprise as you can switch it off when raining or mr policeman
pulls you up

Ive got an LC diff in my GC 4 door.....works great, has bigger brakes than the GC standard and thicker axles. Havent had any probls with it yet
That would be the simple easy cheapest conversion from standard.

Has anybody looked into the 2wd triton difff's. A mate of mine has a 91 triton 2wd 2.6l astron powered thing. It's leaf spring and it's factory LSD. Has big drum brakes on the back. I'm gunna measure it up for length against my GC sedan diff soon.
Dont know how easy they would be to find at the wrekers though

mate seriously the amount of posts your making

ive driven my lancer with hot 2.6 making 90rwkw for 2 years on a locked galant wagon diff. i never broke anything and it got the shit reved out of it everywhere, clutch kicked and roll backs at full noise then dropping clutch. by the time you finish procrastinating you wont have the money for a decent setup and wont have anything pwerful enough to brake a standard diff peroid. if you want to have some fun then just weld it, if you have the coin i suggest a commodore lsd. cheers

btw i havent meant to offend you in anyway.

I think LC lancer is same as galant wagon...bigger drums an fatter axles.

My first upgrade was to a locked Galant wagon diff... broke an axle on the street running around on cheaterparts old race rubber :) That was with a carby 2.6...

Then went to the scorpian diff locked an aint broke yet... this is with 130rwkw of efi, intercooled turbo.

Scorp diff should do it, and I'm pretty sure you can get LSD's for the 10-bolt new from Cusco (EX Lancer turbo ~83-84 model ran the 10-bolt Mitsi diff)
It'd be pretty exxy though. You'd be better off running either a weldy or the open centre until you can afford a Hilux jobbie
