4G63T VR4 to RWD what box?

Post by 2slow »

hi all, newbi here, great site btw :)

i have a gc galant that i have a VR4 4G63T engine for, which brings me to the reason for this post.
what gearbox do i use for the conversion?

i have been told that there is a wide and a narrow block, what is my VR4 engine? and what 5 speed do i need to use?

thanks

VR-4 is narrowblock engine. It should bolt to your existing gearbox. Measure the bottom two dowel pin spacing on the bellhousing - 310mm is narrowblock and 330mm is wideblock.

Welcome to the site.
Yeah, bolt up your 4 speed and see how you go - they are pretty tough.
If you go 5 speed you want a Jap box (not the Sigma 5 speed). Apart from the dowel spacing, make sure you get one that has the gearstick set about where you want it, some have longer extension housings than others. Others here know more about clutches and spline counts than me.....but what you are proposing is not unusual.

I'll save you time and money. Get an adaptor and supra 5 speed, and drive it how it should be driven. Anything made by Mitsubishi will break.

thanks all :D

next question:

i can get a jap 5spd no problem at all :D
is the 4wd clutch/pressure plate/spline all the same for rwd jap 5spd?

and who here has actually put one of these engines in to a galant or sigma or lancer?
cheers 8-)

hi again

after some scouting about on the exedy site, i came up with:

the VR4/EVO (up to EVO3) has dimensions of
225 x 22.4 x 20

the sigma has dimensions of
215 x 22.4 x 20

so i will be able to use the clutch kit i have sitting here already, which is awesome

seems like no body else here has done this swap? no body has replied sayin they have

i read elsewhere that i will need starion engine mounts. should be easy enough to source
what else would i need?

i have nutted out so far that i need:

new exhaust manifold. hi mount
inlet manifold to be chopped and rewelded to face front wards
starion engine mounts
MAYBE a custom sump

anything else that i would be needing?
i already have the complete engine, computer, full wiring harness

thanks

You can get starion or l300 4g63 engine mounts. You need a modded thermostat housing to be able to clear the firewall and prob go for a corolla remote thermostat. You could go the cheap way out for the exhaust manifold and make an adaptor to flip the manifold over. You won't need a modded sump at all but you will need to massage the firewall with a hammer to have it clear the crank angle sensor.

Probably one of the best places to get more detail on what is involved is head to www.austarion.com and check out their twin cam section. Or you could check out www.projectzerog.com as well as they have been discussing it longer but it are mostly based in the US and tends to use what parts they have available easily over there. More people in this site go for the 4g54 whereas the aussie starion guys typically stay with their 4g63 engine and put the twincam on it.

jeez your seach skills arnt to good
i did this post on the old site
any way to fit a la lancer you need
l300,stazza engine mounts or custom made ones like the ones
i make
thermostate housing is a modded item
custom exhuast manifold
evo 4-9 inlet manifold or cut and shut yours
now the crank angle senor does fit but blockes your heater hoses or
get the crank angle senor form a RVR
rwd water pump or modd yours
and a custom sump unlees your want to use the l300 sump with NO
WINDAGE TRAY AT ALL
and a factory 5 speed WONT HOLD up to anything at all these thing make
around the 180kw mark stock so any foot action will cause banging noises
from under your feet ;)
