Duratec and S2000 conversions

Hi All,

Been waiting for some time off to go and get my little Yellow LA from Adelaide, and while I've had nothing to tinker with i started doing some surfing, and came across some different company's providing specialist parts to complete Duratec RWD engine transplants into Escorts and Caterham / Lotus 7 Kit-cars etc. http://retroford.co.uk/ http://www.turbosport.co.uk/forumdispla ... tallations http://www.sbdev.co.uk/SBD%20Motorsport%20Display.htm
also the odd Honda S2000 Engine transplant http://www.turbosport.co.uk/forumdispla ... 00-Install. i think this would be overkill however the wiring for a start looks like a nightmare ....(possibly need to join the forums to see the pictures)

Anyhow this got me thinking how difficult it would be to grab a stock Duratec from a late model Ford Focus or similar, and assemble all the bits required for the conversion and make it work. (Retroford Supply rwd kits for Escorts, but it appears they have some Universal bits and pieces, Mounts etc.) Before i go any further let me say I understand two things,

1/ Anything is possible if you throw enough money at it
2/ They are not Mitsubishi engines.

On the plus side of the equation they are setup in the same way as a Mitsubishi engine (Exhaust and inlets), and go fast bits for the Duratec's seem readily available, abet a bit expensive (Quad Roller Barrel Throttle bodies... drool)
and 200 to 300HP is possible with a decent NA setup with these engines..also the 2.0L comes in at around 92 Kg including manifolds, flywheel and clutch, The 2.6 dry engine complete with carb, air cleaner, exhaust manifold, collector alternator, starter motor, air-con pump, radiator hoses and torque convertor is 182.175kg without oil. :O

They are also apparently quite a tall motor (I'm yet to find actual dimensions on the web) and this may mean a Dry sump could be necessary, which may be problematic.

The Escort Engine bay is around 600mm Square and about 480mm Deep from bonnet to Chassis rails, and it seems they can getaway with a modified sump anyone know or can measure what a Lancer's Engine bay is?

This engine also opens up the possibility for different gearbox options ie 6 speed Box off a late model 2006 onwards MX-5, although it would obviously need a bigger trans tunnel and custom mounts but it will easily bolt up with an aftermarket bell-housing.

Food for thought.

This isn't something I'm going to attempt in the near future, as I'll be quite happy with my old Dual Webered 4g35 for a while.. I'm just trying to think outside the square.

Your correct Pistorf

Mazda MZR engine (from Wikipedia)

MZR is the brand name of a generation of Straight-4 engines engineered and built by the Mazda Motor Corporation between 2001 and 2011. The MZR generation includes gasoline and diesel powered engines ranging in displacements from 1.3L to 2.5L. All gasoline-powered MZRs feature an all-aluminum block construction with iron cylinder liners. The diesel MZR-CD engines use a cast-iron block (virtually identical to the Mazda F engine) and an aluminum cylinder head. There are three specific engine families within the MZR generation which include the small 1.3L to 1.6L Mazda Z-engine, the mid-sized 1.8L to 2.5L Mazda L-engine, and the 2.0L and 2.2L common-rail diesel Mazda R-engine. Each engine has its own proper engine code and for accuracy should be identified with such.

The DISI turbocharged MZR L3-VDT was on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list for 3 consecutive years for 2006, 2007 and 2008.

The Ford Motor Company owns rights to build and use the MZR generation of engines under their Duratec brand name for global service in its vehicles since 2003.

As of 2011, Mazda will discontinue development of the MZR generation of engines to be replaced by their new SkyActiv generation of engines. At this time Ford will continue to develop and manufacture variants of the Z-engine and L-engine for their Duratec and EcoBoost four-cylinder engines

not that I'm discounting the Toyota motor gonna go have a squizzy now

A YB Cosworth (Sierra) engine would be a nice transplant. 300 hp is not a realistic figure to chase. Also , the dream ford engine would be a Csworth BDG. They were getting 275 hp out of the aussie works Escort rally cars in 1979 on carbs.

ya i have to say 300hp would be a overly costly exercise and out of the realms of sensibility for a road car. if i can get close to 200hp I'll be happy camper with a NA motor. apparently from what I've read SBD Motorsport
http://www.sbdev.co.uk/SBD%20Motorsport%20Display.htm have managed 214bhp at the flywheel with a stock 2.0L On throttles and management.

Duratec's are a good thing........We run a 2.0l XR4 Fiesta and it makes about 100kw atw with light intake and exhaust mods. Lots of cams etc..... available
Standard intake manifold is only good for 200BHP, then you have to convert to quads or Cosworth intake manifold.

Check out Cosworth and Burton's websites for lots of engine info.

You can buy a 280hp 2.3L off the shelf from both!

Current MX5 runs 2.0l Duratec for an output of 114kw in RWD format (use gearbox as well for conversion)

Mazda 3 runs 2.0l in base models 110kw, 2.3l and 2.5l in upper models about 125kw and MPS runs 2.3l turbo for 190kw.

Honda S2000 is a good starting point as well 180kw straight off the bat. There was a guy doing the conversion a few years ago in an LA, but I don't know if it ever got finished? and I can't remember what forum it was on.
