Replace water pump GD Galant

Post by JRWhy »

Hi everyone. I have just acquired a 1977 GD Galant sedan so I thought the most sensible thing to do was join this forum :)
There are a few things that are urgently needed to be done on this car, with the most important one being replacing the leaking water pump. Can anyone tell me...is this a straightforward job...and what exactly has to be done ? (as in step by step instructions)

Any and all help is greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance

Does the lack of responses mean this is a major job best tackled only by a professional mechanic?
I've been quoted $295 to have it done, but I'm about $200 short at the moment so it's something I'm going to have to do myself :(
Any help is REALLY appreciated..

replace water pump is loosten the alternater so that the belt is loose, then drain radiator fluid, unsdrew the fan assembly, unbolt the water pump, clean even very lighly sant the seal, replace gasket that comes with water pump, glue, stick on water pump, fan, belt.
done
its very straight forward
think about removign the thermostat that is under the top inlet housing too.

Its a peice of piss.

Shuggy's instructions are good. If your a bit of a newb i would remove the radiator as well to give you more room, also you could flush it out with a hose when its out.

You just unbolt the old one, clean the surfaces use a little silone on each side of the new gasket to make sure its good and then just reassemble the rest of the stuff you removed to get to it.

You could do the whole job with a couple of screw drivers an 10, 12, 13, and 14 spanner im pretty sure too.

Were bouts you located.

Hey Shuggy and Karl, thanks a lot for that info. I really appreciate your help
That's pretty much what I thought would need to be done, but being the cautious type I thought I'd double check :)

BTW, does anybody know how many litres the fuel tank holds?

If you put full tanks on the thieves will go further, $5.00 will mean you'll
find it closer to home, oh when people borrow it they have to put fuel in
it which is good also.
.
Do not forget to put in the fuel additive when you refuel will have a lead
fuel head.
