NEW AND HAVE ASTRON

Post by kingofsideways »

G'day guys new to the site have just brought an old 1983 L200 express ute with a 2.6lt astron engine in it have no idea when it was put in and have no idea about carbs and such only ever had to deal with EFI....

So if you guys could tell me everything about this engine ie. problems and faults popular upgrades good bang for buck upgrades and such just everything..

Problems i can see:
Smells really bad on start up and when you up the old girl
leaking fuel from carb (i think) maybe gasket has a crack
oil leaking from rocker cover gasket
exhaust needs attention

I went down and spoke to old mate at my local exhaust shop and he said 2" sports system and extractors will be $620 fitted is that okay?? he has always looked after me so im guessing its alright??

Anyway all the help i can get would be awesome lol and sorry about the long post

Cheers Longy

hey mate welcome to the site,

alot of guys on here know what they are talking about so you wont find it hard getting answers!

id say rip off the carby setup and go efi! i did it to my triton ute wich also runs the 2.6 astron.

never looked back, and a massive performance and economy increase!
have a look in the FAQ's theres a write up on what you need to do.
and use the search function or else face the consiquences lol

Welcome to the site..
As a new member, why not post in Introduce yourself, tell us a little bit about yourself and your car, and maybe even post up some pics? http://www.sigma-galant.com/viewforum.php?f=47
Where are you located? If in or near Sydney you might be interested in or next cruise, coming up in Feb? Come meet the members and see the mods they have done, it's a great day and shit talk in compulsory
As fonz said there is plenty of info already on the site about your motor, have a skim through that. If there is a particular question that either you don't think is covered or you need an answer that is specific to your vehicle, then ask away.

I love your site name BTW.

I'm still looking for some alloys for my L200...

Stud pattern is the typical 4x4 6 stud style, the problem is that Mitsubishi keep changing the offset.
I have it on good advise that recent model Nissan Navara 15" alloys bolt in just nice.

I found a set of Pacemaker extractors off a sigma fit, (with a little bit of encouragement)

Exhaust setups for 2.6L in L200 need a custom exhaust because the pipe under the floor is about six inches closer to the tail shaft as opposed to the path that the pipe goes on a sigma or similar.
Even the L200's with 4G52 2L engines had a different exhaust manifold which is 4 into 1 instead of the sigma 4-2-1 manifold.

My L200 had a stainless steel exhaust fitted to it about 15 years ago. It hasn't missed a beat and is still in top nick.
To fit the sigma extractors, I bolted it onto a spare head I had lying around, hit the extractors with an oxy torch and bent them around to fit.

So my advice: if you are going to splash some cash on the exhaust, do it in stainless. Normal steel will do for the extractors, but there has never been anything off the shelf available for 2.6L engines in a L200.
You may as well do it properly.

Leaking carby:
Get rid of it and bolt on a 34ADM Weber from a Falcon or go EFI:
Here is my run down of how to do the 34AADM conversion:
http://l200ute.com/jamie/9weber/index.htm

Leaky rocker cover:
Serveral reasons:
1. Engine is tired and compression is escaping past the rings and pressurising the sump.
2. Valve stem seals are stuffed and need replacing.
3. Non genuine rocker cover gasket fitted.
4. Previous owner attempted to stop the leaking by over tensioning the rocker cover bolts and that has warped the rocker cover.

Start with compression testing the engine and see what you find.

BTW Kingofsideways.....

Sideways in a 2.6L L200s is common practice.
Just go easy on the circle work.
Spine pins break easily and diff centres with low ratios are getting hard to find.

Quick note:
If your tub has external tie down hook on it around the outside of the rim, you will most likely have a 4.9:1 diff
If your tub has four rails mounted on the inside of the tube to tie down to, it is most likely a 3.9:1 diff.
If you have a factory fitted centre console, it;s sure to be a 3.9:1
Column shift: definately 4.9:1

3.9:1 diffs are getting almost impossible to find now.
4.9:1 are still fitted into most Mitsubishi commercial a 4x4's

So what is it that makes you "The King Of Sideways"?? ;)

Mate keep it simple,
What is your budget?
How much of the work can you do yourself?
I dont mean to embaress you, its an honest question.

That exhaust quote is a pretty reasonable price!

For now, you could
rebuild the stok carb (cost is cheap and Easy)
Or as Jamie suggested a XD or XE Falcon Webber is easy to find and cheap, but you may need and adaptor plate.. and you should rebuild it while its off anyway (but again cheap and easy)

Replace the rocker cover gasket, and see how you go for awhile.
Other stuff can come later as you want or need
