Manualising power steering box on scorpion.

I have had a leaky PS pressure hose for some time now and it finally let go completely at the fitting on my way to work this morning. The hose is completely rooted, as the internal layers have delaminated and now I can't even salvage the ends to make a new one using generic fittings.




SO... Having felt how it drives with zero pressure in the system (better imho) and not wanting to spend $300 on a new hose just to find my PS pump is now rooted from running dry, I have decided to remove the power steering completely but retain the low ratio steering box. I plan to run a tube from the oil inlet to the oil outlet on the steering box so that there are no internal pressure issues and take the rest of the steering support gear (pump, cooler tube) out of the car.


I'll keep everyone informed as to my progress, and I welcome any suggestions. I'm new here as you can see by my number of posts so please be kind with comments.

Well, i was able to cut and re-flare the tube in question. I then tested the power steering pump and it works fine. The hose still needs replacing but at least it is worth doing now, so my bypass experiment may have to wait for another time.

Hopefully the local Hydraulics shop can do it for cheaper than the $300 retail price.

There's a really good chance that a hydraulic hose maker like Pirtek or Enzed can make your hoses. And will work out a LOT cheaper than original.

Check the mounting bracket for the P/S pump. If it's loose or broken, the pipes will break again soon.

Will do. I just had all the ancillary stuff off the engine to replace the chain tensioner, so I may not have put it back on tight enough. Thanks!

for hoses especially hydraulics and trans cooler lines the local hose specialist or hydraulics service will always be able to repair or make a hose cheaper than buying one from repco or a similar store and definitely cheaper than the dealer same thing with pumps etc they can repair or replace it cheaper as well.
