Front Spoilers and Rear Flares for GC Galant Hardtop

Post by Mitsiman »

I am in the final stages of finishing my galant for the upcoming drags, and I want to visually finish the vehicle off.

Currently it already has a fibreglass bonnet with a scoop, and a rear spoiler fitted to the rear.

Wanting to see any photos or links or history of firstly rear flares as my drag tyres are outside of the guards. Does anyone know of which ones would fit the easiest? Preferably some photos maybe.

I am also wanting to fit up a spoiler of some type to the front, I am no longer running the front grill or front bumper any more and I was thinking of something like the old Datsun 1200 rally car style.

Here is a photo of the car currently, but now minus the grill and the two lower plates. I have also now fitted an oil cooler under the passenger side headlight.

Im thinking maybe a small spoiler that mounts at the base of the intercooler, havn't decided yet whether to keep the grill or not. would appreciate any ideas and photochopping.

You could go with the American style grill?

Relocate the shocks and massage the inner wheel wells and keep it all inside the guards.

Otomoto here in Sydney have fiberglass flares to suit a KE70 Corolla that I reckon would be pretty close to fitting a Galant. some GTO's had them but you've got Buckley's chance of finding some let alone finding reproduction ones. And I'm only assuming they'd be close to fitting, I honestly don't know.

You could cut the wheel arches and make you're own fiberglass flares. If you're going with wide rubber you'll probably need to do it to get clearance anyway. My coupe has the standard rear two leaf springs with 195/60/R14's and the top of the rear tyres almost sit higher than the wheel arch (along way inside of course) whilst static.

To tub the rear end you will need to cut the rails and relocate shocks. I know relocating a set of coilovers isn't a big issue for drag cars but i don't know about cutting rails. Also, you'd be limited by your rear leaf springs which come to think of it are pretty much right under the chassis rail so that would be another hassle.

With the right offset you could get 10's under a hardtop. I have 15x8's under mine and there is plenty of room left.

We have no plans to tub the car at this stage. Our normal drag tyres fit fine, we only need around another 1" flare added to keep it all legal. Thats why cutting and fitting some flares will work nicely.

We are staying currently with the leaf spring setup which has already been all modified with slapper bars and modified inserts in the pivot points where its all mounted.

As for the front of the car, Im not planning on running any grill at all. Just want something beneath the intercooler itself. I could leave nothing there but it looks sort of wrong. Will take some mroe photos tomorrow and you can see what I mean

I think it looks good with the GC grill. Also people will be less likely to mistake it for a mazda or datsun ..etc

There is no need to tub the car just relocate the shocks and once you remove the shock hanger there is another 2 inches to play with, with a little massaging you will get a 26x9 under the rear arches without the need for flares and it wont look like dogs balls.

Mic_77, by the sounds of it you have the rear shocks relocated on your galant? Could you take some pictures of the their new location?
Would be interested to see what you have done there.

My old 4dr had this set-up my new car is tubbed I will try to get some pics of the old set-up it works very well you basically set it up with new mounts for the shocks in the boot then neeten up the inner wheel wells and work out the correct offset for the wheels.

You can see the new shock mounts in this shot basically the same idea for a standard set-up just not as tall or in as far as mine are done.

Nice shots and thanks for the information, but i don't want to have to shorten the differential or start changing rims to get a different offset to bring the tyres in further. That is something I may look at later when I go to do the full rollcage into the rear of the car etc.

Here is an updated photo of the front of the vehicle with the oil cooler and engine bay
