Lol ha ha but seriously if you think about it there should be millions of them all over the world just on Wednesday I seen 6 just on my way to Forbes got some parts off a gb but still It would be good to know
Re: How many galants were made ?
Okay so we are up to 38, that's progress. Nice work, keep 'em coming.

Re: How many galants were made ?
Don't know how many were sold in australia but there weren't enough of them! Do know how many Starions were sold though- 1699 (can someone confirm that figure?). Have fun getting parts...
Re: How many galants were made ?
More luck getting Starion parts than Galant hardtop parts, lol
Re: How many galants were made ?
The guy who's selling the green Gd on eBay ATM has a hardtop shell ex race car
Re: How many galants were made ?
Is that for sale too? Got any pics?

I can say that he would rather sell his mother than that galant.

It is one that I am restoring for him after I finish 3 of his Valiants.

I have owned 4 over the years and currently have a '94 HJ hatchA112H wrote:I have seen 7 and there must be 25 on this site so my guess is 32

Okay, okay- you win. I'd be lucky to have seen six in my entire life, and one of those was a canoe in a wreckers a long time ago...A112H wrote:More luck getting Starion parts than Galant hardtop parts, lol
Re: How many galants were made ?
well I have owned 5 galants, and my dad must have owned about 20. So we can bump that figure up to about 60ish

Re: How many galants were made ?
By Galants I'm assuming you are referring to what we would call the GA-GD model galants?
Starting from the locally produced galants..
I can't find any production figures but the Chrysler aust plant was pumping out abt 35,000 valiants per year in the early 70s then down to abt 18,000 per year by the time the GD Galant finished up and the GE sigma started production. The sigma was considered a massive seller and they were making abt 50,000 per year. The GC and GD also sold well but would have sold much less than the GE. So I'd guess a total of 100,000 GA to GD Galants would have been made here?
Not sure if Galants were made locally in other locations around the world under the Chrylser/Dodge name but Mitsubishi Japan was exporting about 60,000 cars in 1971 and up to around 250,000 by 1977 of which I'd guess half or more would be galants. Mitsubishi production in Japan for domestic market was about 300,000 per year throughout that same period. As we know there were more models to choose from in Japan so i'd estimate only one third to be Galants.
So for about a 7 year run of "GA-GD" shaped galants, that adds up to about 1.1 million units. This wouldn't include any Galants made in other parts of the world but i'd be surprised if that would add more than a few hundred thousand to that figure.
So in the absence of actual facts,
i'd say around 1.5 million Galants were made (at least what aussies would call a Galant) but i reckon only between 1 to 5% of those would still remain.

Re: How many galants were made ?
wouldnt be many Ive never seen a stock number higher than the mid 4000's for GA or GB so thats probbaly no more than 8ooo all up not including the imported A51/A52's heres some numbers (Lancer made in Japan) just to give you an idea of production numbers, (too many galants to be bothered adding them up on a sunday morning and I dont have Oz production numbers anyway)
A71 29, 867 1972 - start 1974
A72 35,371 1972 till start 1974
A73 4,470 " "
TOTAL Lancer production for late 1972 til 1974 .....69,708
edit: total sold in Japan till 1974 was aprox 51,000 which leaves 18,700 world wide, save a Lancer now before they are all gone
Galant wise overall production was at 250000 vehicles per year in 1969 thats vehicles nor specifically galants, but youd assume that are a lot more common than Lancers, Australian made Galants would be rare if you specifically wanted an Australian one (mad Japanese collector maybe)

Re: How many galants were made ?
I know exactly how many galants were assembled in Australia, as per the figures in The book Great Idea's In Motion.... A History of chrysler in Australia.
So Here Goes:
GA sedan 4,899 in 71, 2,543 in 72
GB sedan: 2,567 in 72, 9,051 in 73, 4,414 in 74 and 828 wagons in 74
GC: 8,013 sedans and 2,052 wagons in 74, 9,756 sedans and 3,405 wagons in 75, 1,577 sedans and 590 wagons in 76.
GD:9,725 sedans and 4,609 wagons in 76, 3,522 sedans and 3,695 wagons in 77.
So in total
GA sedan:7,442
GB sedan:16,032
GB wagon:828
GC sedan:19,346
GC wagon:6,074
GD sedan:13,248
GD wagon:8,305
Now for some sigma buffs.
GE sedans:69,936
GE wagons:21,599
GH sedan:56,806
GH wagon:28,284.
So in total from 71 to 81 chrysler Australia assembled 247,873 sigma galants
Unfortunately these figures don't include the imported Galant Hardtops, Lancers, and early colt galants.

Re: How many galants were made ?
According to the blurb in the factory workshop manual, the "body number" at the end of the VIN commences from No. 1 in each Body Type and Price Class.my 2nd month 74 is number 2754 so Im doubting that number for GB's made anyone have a high number GB?
There are 2 Body Types (4 door sedan / 4 door wagon) and 2 Price Classes (Medium / High) .... so there would be 4 GBs with xxxx as the body number.
Re: How many galants were made ?
could be! maybe.... but the jump in production seems odd as well, but lets see, I have a low price range late 73 at No. 1500' odd so thats probably all there was for '73 in the range, whos got a late high price range '73? would be interesting to see
it should be a chassis number over 6000 (looks like bugger all wagons so forget them for the moment)
edit cant work , if I have a GB which is in the high end there cant be two with the same number so they can only have made 2754 by feb '74 yes?

Re: How many galants were made ?
Not necessarily ..... according to the manual, the GA/GB designation is just the "series" - it sort of implies that the body numbers didn't necessarily start back at 0001 again when the GB was released ?
According to the AI / AII / GA manual, the imported A51 & A52 use a different numbering system again, but the GA system is as per the GB.
So all the GA/GB sedans would probably be M41--- xxxx or H41---- xxxx
My GB (March 74 build) is H41 / ECxx - 5665

Re: How many galants were made ?
my GA sedan is GA1 M41 765 compliance date 3/72
1972 GA GALANT/COLT, with a VR4 4G63T 151kw atw :-)
Re: How many galants were made ?
So the letter code after M41 should be "CCxx" ? ... which will give the production date rather than the date the compliance plate was fitted.
I'm wondering whether they built the cars continuously, or built them in batches which could mean you could have a lot of variation in numbers per month ?
For those that weren't aware, the 2 letter/2 number code before the body number is the production date :
First letter - Year A=70 B=71 C=72 etc
Second letter - Month A=Jan B=Feb C=Mar etc
The 2 numbers are the day of the month.
So my car (EC26) was built 26th March 1974.
This works for GA/GB ... no idea if they used the same system for GC/GD

Re: How many galants were made ?
You might be on to something there Dave, while they were imported I believe the hardtops were done in batches and numbered as they came off the boat, nothing to do with date of manufacture. For example a lot GC hardtops seem to be 6/76. I assume a boat load landed either 5/76 or 6/76
Re: How many galants were made ?
I can probably include some more info to clear up any details. If you take a look at the information pdf of the parts manual which I put up of the Galant A51 to GC it gives the breakdown in writing of the vehicle compliance no. translation.
http://astronsworld.dyndns.org/astron/v ... ?f=14&t=20
And also add further info to the numbers. My two GB's that I have, one as a parts car, Compliance No's are 11/72 is a GB 4h41/CK03-035# and my 9/73 is GB1H41/DI10-126#. The 72 has a couple of things in common with the GA galants with the door handles being the same and a couple of other small things too I think.
And taking a look at the Hardtop/GTO registor on this site, my GC coupe is the oldest one listed, apart from the 16L and the GTO's, as a 10/74 build which would be pretty close to right as the build No on the firewall is A112H-2200201. I suspect this No was actually placed on the firewall in japan.

Re: How many galants were made ?
yep its a number that as far as I know is in sequence but doesnt give a date as such. Chrysler Aust had some "issues" where it was claimed that they were fitting compliance plates to cars as they were leaving Adelaide rather than when made. This was discovered when someone bought a new Valiant only to find out it was a lot older then the compliance date, I think some other problems were found as well. Some funny stuff happened there I guess, but my 2 74 dated Gal has a 2 74 dated heater so its all good thereA112H wrote:You might be on to something there Dave, while they were imported I believe the hardtops were done in batches and numbered as they came off the boat, nothing to do with date of manufacture.
