New to Sigmas
New to Sigmas
Hi guys, Im new here and this is my first post kind of apart from posting WTB a Sigma.
Tomorrow 'Ill be picking up a Sigma and slowly doing it up over a few months, it wont be anything special. I just want it to end up straight, clean and mean basically. The is more than I was prepared to pay but I can rearrange some things if I have to.
I didn't really plan on buying one until about 2 weeks ago I was starting to miss my old S3 Bluebird TRX that I fixed up about 7 years ago, I miss the small fun light RWD cars. Apart from body work all I did to that was put on a weber and exhaust and it was a little beast. Then not really looking for one I just started browsing some older small RWD cars for sale and a few Sigmas caught my eye but all 3 were sold before I even had the chance to look at them, for some reason I have been hunting one down since.
I have been glued to this site reading nearly everything over the last few days and trying to get as much information as I can about things I plan to do.
So far all I plan to do is a paint job and mags and a weber, not sure if Ill do anything else apart from a full service and general maintenance. Depending on body work needed and the weather I should have it painted black in a week or 2 if all goes to plan.
I'm sure there will be many trips to u-pull-it in my near future.

Re: New to Sigmas
Thanks for the welcome
I haven't picked it up yet, or paid for it or seen it in person but from what I understand it had a 2nd hand motor put in it 2 years ago, Im hoping its a reco. The body looks pretty rough but I cant see any rust so helpfully there isnt any. So if it runs good like they say it does and it has minimal rust I will get it for sure.
Its a GJ with a 2.6L and 3 speed auto, I did want a GK or GN but this will do if its any good.
I didn't find anything from the WTB thread, I had already found it online before posting but I didn't really want a GJ but now I don't care so much.
And yeah I was thinking of painting it black, at first I thought yellow to keep it simple but I really don't like yellow...
Here is a picture, its a bit of a eye sore but its not hard to imagine what it can be for cheap/nothing.

Re: New to Sigmas
Well I didn't buy it, I bought some magnesium jelly bean mags 4x114.3, i can pick them up with my little finger, they weigh nothing at all. Ill hang on to them for when I get one though.
They also had Avon semi slicks on them, the tyres come off a Formula Ford race car and still have tons of tread left.
I ended up buying a 88 Colt, I don't intend to keep it though. I just plan to fix it and sell it then Ill have a little more money for a better condition Sigma.
Nothing really wrong with it apart from it needs a good clean and a battery as its been sitting for a long time.
Should give me a little more time to look for some Sigmas that come up for sale as well.
Here is a couple of pics.

Re: New to Sigmas
Not really going to do much to it.ISKA8 wrote:congrats bro..what are your plans for the colt?
It has 2 small rust spots in the doors so Ill cut it out and fix it up and repaint the bottoms of the doors. Then maybe fluids and plugs if it needs it... maybe some cleaning ect.
Then just sell it for extra money to get a 2.6L Sigma. This isnt any good for what I want, I was after light car with 4 and RWD. I haven't looked to much in to it but Sigmas selling often for around $500 are good value for money compared to what else is out there.
I hope in about a weeks time the Colt will be gone and Ill be on the hunt for a Sigma again.
Re: New to Sigmas
Yeah, I know this site's about siggies and gals but the colt does have potential. I've been sitting on my RB hatch for ages. Spent too much on it to just to ditch it but it needs a stack of TLC and coin to get her online again. Cordia turbo brakes, seats, front suspension, power steering. A tonne of other stuff. It's become a yard ornament and the wife ain't thrilled...
Re: New to Sigmas
My brother-in-law is into Colts. He used to have a really awesome RA that he spent a lot of money on. He had a heap of internal engine work done to it and Koni suspension, for a fwd it actually wasn't to bad? The Recaro's he had in it now live in my wagon.
The best thing about Colts is the twin gearstick gearbox, I wish other cars had the same design, once you get the shift pattern sorted you can get them to really fly.
Here's coltspeed2000's Colt

He's got another one now, all I need to do is convince him he needs to finish it.

Re: New to Sigmas
If the Colt had a 2.6 and was RWD I would be a very happy man.
I used to have the same Colt as this about 10 years ago, it was a cool little car for a daily but that's not what I'm looking for.
Heres a pic of my daily the day I got it home, its a very nice car.

Re: New to Sigmas
Nice pic on your last post. A clean colt indeed. The dual range shift was trick (imagine having an 8spd 'box!) but had a habit of dropping a circlip in them. Caused the gears to jump out of low/high range. I fitted a cyclone 1.8 and had a set of 2" hand fabbed ss pipes hooked up to mine. Pulled like a train, made wet roads a suicide run!75wagon wrote:My brother-in-law is into Colts. He used to have a really awesome RA that he spent a lot of money on. Re: New to Sigmas
Well I gotta wait for a good day to do a little work on the Colt.
It has 2 small rust spots I need to fix.
Apart from that the accelerator keeps getting stuck, like cruise control when you take your foot off.
I was surprised at how quick it is to get going, its been 5 years or more since I had a zippy car.
Going up Willunga Hill (very steep hill) I had to slow down to 80 all the way, if I tried to go over it would drop back to 2nd and scream.
Apart from that its not a bad little rig, shouldn't take too long to fix and sell then return to hunting a Sigma.

Re: New to Sigmas
I had a similar problem on my GSL Cordia. There's an annoying pollution control gizmo right next to the throttle linkage that, if bent slightly, will jam the accelerator open. I had to snap the throttle open and closed a few times to get it to disengage. It was only a 1600 but a jammed throttle in any car can scare crap out of you. Could be the same thing...
