Weights of different Sigma's
Weights of different Sigma's
Hey, i called the RTA tech line today to get a weight for a Sigma, they were unhelpful and vague as usual but said the weight would be 1170 for conversion purposes, i have higher numbers than this so was a bit confused.
Can anyone clear up weights of different sigma's from 80-87. For conversion purposes it has to be the sedan model with the largest capacity engine fitted but without optional extras like AC and towbar. Sources for these weights would be great too.

Re: Weights of different Sigma's
looks like GH would be out for a 5,665 cc LS1 in NSW with current VSI 06 laws... wonder if we will ever get NCOP
Re: Weights of different Sigma's
can you confirm J and N are the same? appreciate it
Re: Weights of different Sigma's
Remember though, you cant cheat it by trying to use a different, heavier model. RMS use the base model with auto, if an option, with spare and all fluids. Doesn't matter if the GSR model weighs 100 kilo more, they will still go off the weight of the base model in auto.
I found, when putting a V8 in my Cortina many moons ago, that the then RTA only use the sedan variant also. I was putting the V8 into a wagon, which weighed considerably more than the sedan but had to use the sedan weight to decide the capacity of the motor.
Their reasoning sux...
cheers

Re: Weights of different Sigma's
i know about the sedan/wagon thing, but i didn't know they used the base model, they don't specify that in the VSI 6. Some base models on other cars would not come with the largest engine option surely?
NCOP they say the heaviest sedan version without extra options... stupid NSW......

Re: Weights of different Sigma's
Yeah that must have been your engineers interpretation perhaps? most basic model with the full size engine?
Think i might ring mine tomorrow and see what he says the conversion weights are for the sigmas. Like i say the guy at the rta was vague and would not give me the accurate number 1170 ish was the best he would give me, then went on to tell me no engineer would work with me if im getting towards that limit... Pfff

Re: Weights of different Sigma's
Yeah, definitely speak to ya engineer eh.
RTA are a bunch of knobs I've found.
I've never been able to get anything remotely useful, info-wise, out of them.
Good luck though, sounds like a sweet combo.

Re: Weights of different Sigma's
1170 for 80-84 1130 for 85+.... sure the numbers posted here are far more accurate, the engineer is sussing it out.
1170 leaves me 6kg short of a legal ls1.... argh! If he comes back with bad news i might have to wait for NSW to adopt NCOP...

Re: Weights of different Sigma's
How do they figure the engine in? It's kw? Maybe use a downrated ls1 if you have your heart set on it? I've heard ideas for other v8s being put into sigmas. Toyota, ford, dodge, etc.

Re: Weights of different Sigma's
funnily enough its not KW which would make perhaps more sense, its engine capacity, based on weight of the vehicle
for a 1100+kg vehicle in NSW thats not got a full chassis the modifier for naturally aspirated engine in cc's is multiply by 4.82 to find maximum capacity
there is an LS engine that has a destroked crank for 5.3 capacity but its not what they have used here in the commodores, they are 5.7+, so theres a lot of cost and hassle there to end up with something thats not brilliant. I looked at the ford 5.4 litre xr8 motors but just not feeling them. So much support and info for the LS chev/holden motors out there now. They make nice power, start cold happily, have an alloy block and are reliable. What more could one want?
anyway spoke more to the engineer and he says the weight for the sigma he has would be 1200kg... Not sure how he got to that, dont care lol.... more than enough

After looking extensively through many many old books and car magazines in my collection, here is the weights I found, sorted by year of manufacture:
1978 GE Sigma GL 1.6 4spd manual = 1096kg

1986 Starion 2.0 Turbo 5spd manual = 1265kg
1986 GN Sigma Wagon GL 2.6 5spd manual = couldn't find exact weight, but Wheels says that it's 54kg heavier than GK 2.6 sedan, which makes it about 1250kg

Sigma Turbo 1195 kg
GH SE 1151 kg
form factory workshop manual
When I was gaining approval to do a V8 conversion on my GH the only weight the engineer was concerned about was the heaviest of the range (turbo @ 1195kg) and worked out engine capacity from that

Re: Weights of different Sigma's
Cheers,
Been talking the the engineer, being there was a lot of conflicting info he was happy with 1200kg as a conversion weight, so that leaves me in good stead
Been sketching out brake conversions, tossing up 4 stud/r31 diff disc rear/drilled blank discs + modern calipers front with 15" r31 chasers or hilux diff drum rear/XA or conversion hub and falcon discs and caliper front with AU falcon chasers. Probably VT master and maybe booster on the first (if it fits) or maybe XB on the second.
