Starter Motor
So mine died yesterday
Bought a brand new one and went to replace it today in the rain... Anyway it turns out you can't get the starter out without removing a engine mount!!!! Has anyone else had this problem? I mean i can remove the mount but what a p.i.t.a

Re: Starter Motor
You should be able to get it in and out without removing the engine mount, as you take it out tilt it up and away from the block. There should be plenty of clearance.

Astron 2 GN Wagon Auto.what engine? never had this problem ever
I rekon i have about 2-3mm of clearance between the starter and the mount. I was under the car when trying to remove it, so possibly from above it can be done. All i know is that i'm glad i bought a new one, and will never have to do it again.
Re: Starter Motor
Ive got the same thing with my GN but thankfully the engines coming out.Its a 2.6 Auto, and I can not get the little bugger out.

Re: Starter Motor
with my lancer it has a 2.6. and with late model magna starters you have to remove the engine mount to install/remove them.

Re: Starter Motor
Yep that pic above definetly has more room. Ive tried but no can do, mind you I was never any good at the rubics cube, Ive even tried holding my tongue out in different positions but it must be the same as the models described by ASTRONTURBO77.
Some pics, you can see there is only about 5mm gap to the engine mount.

Re: Starter Motor
put a jack under the engine at the bellhousing and undo the engine mount
jack up the engine a bit as to just get enough clearance.
cheers

Re: Starter Motor
Late starter (Magna?) by the look of it.
Magnas don't have the same sort of engine mount, so no issues.
When I used the Magna stater on the SoD, I had to modify the mount (remove a bit) to make it fit
cheers

Re: Starter Motor
When i bought mine, My mate looked it up in his book as he is a auto electrician, and there is 2 starters listed for the GN. It doesn't say what the difference is but maybe it could be size!
Re: Starter Motor
i had an iteresting thread on starters a while ago, theres three different starters, 1 sigma one and 2 magna ones, make sure you use the right one or itll get chewed up, though i suppose theyd be matched to the gearbox/flywheel.... DONT USE A MAGNA STARTER IN A SIGMA, DONT USE A SIGMA STARTER IN A MAGNA
also the three different starters have about three different types each, so it seems... depending on bosch/mitsubishi or whatever... i had 7 DIFFERENT astron starters at one point
cheers,
rob

Re: Starter Motor
I think your right Rob, the one in there now is a Bosch, and the replacement one is exactly the same size. The car was a one owner and came with the log books, and al thel reciepts are there for any work done but no starter motor. The car has only done 105,000kms but it did have a blown headgasket for a little while. From what i hear this is a common killer of starters in these cars.
Re: Starter Motor
i remember my father and i discussing the principle, but i cant quite remember,
the reduction drive has a smaller motor, but also has gears, so its physically lager?
the direct drive has a more powerfull (larger?) motor and is physically smaller?
or did we end up agreeing the reduction drive was more efficient producing more torque through gearing with a more efficient motor?
i cant ask him, anyone elses thoughts on the matter?
cheers,
rob

Re: Starter Motor
My starter is a reduction drive Bosch to suit TM-TP Magna. And as can be seen in the pic of engine bay above, it has ample clearance to remove and Install .
Also there is only one starter listed in the Mitsubishi spare parts catalogue. There may be more listed in the Bosch catologue, but I dont have one to check.
Any starter, Bosch or Mitsubishi, from previous models should also fit.

Thanks heaps guys
This is exactly why i like this forum. There is no wrong answer, only different opinions/way to do things.
I ended up dropping the car off at the mechanics this morning, as i had a couple of other things being done as well

Re: Starter Motor
ive had issues with those large starters aswell, theyre a pest.
i destroyed the plastic (yes theyre crappy plastic) reduction drive in 2 of them on the high comp engine i was running.
i always go for the smaller non reduction starters now, theyve been more reliable over time and only take 5 mins to change, not half an hour and some swearing.
only thing is they like more juice to start the engine. but with a large battery isnt an issue.

Here is a dodgy picture of a couple of starters I found in the shed

The one at the rear is the factory Sigma starter from my GN. I only replaced it because I though the reduction starter would be a better option
The front one came of a 2.6 of unknown origin in a Scorpion that I had. It is very small

Re: Starter Motor
the top one in that pic IS a reduction drive, the bottom small one is not.
the motors are pretty much the same, just the small one has less to break down/wear out.
i think they probably changed things to take some load off the battery and give the cars a better chance to crankover with a half flat battery.
but thats just a guess

Re: Starter Motor
the genuine one that came out of my tn was a smaller unit to a 'replacement' one which ending up failing so i was lucky enough to find a new near genuine at the wreckers which was the same size as my original
both the genuine stock ones had a mitsu AW part number and a 92 bosch part number, where as the replacement just had a bosch number which was different to the genuine part number
so i would suggest if your wanting a magna unit try and look for a genuine one with both part numbers, im led to believe that the 2nd gen magnas used the same starters as the 1st too
