Re: ca18 into gd
My brother had a ca18det in a 720 pick up had a full engine rebuild 6 months later it spun a bottom end baring, these engines are way to prone just on 10psi only lasting 6 months. if you wanted to go with an nissan engine go for a sr20det, there alot stronger and can handle heaps of hp on stock internals
just a thought.
just a thought.

Re: ca18 into gd
yer i would of most prob went to a sr rather a ca but the ca was vertually a gift from a friend so a full package just has been rebuilt for only $600.
and sorry my gd isnt for sale lol i have 2 but 1 is a mess with no glass or much tbh haha![Laughing ](./images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)

Re: ca18 into gd
Yeah, no. SR's are only good for maybe 300hp on stock internals, but you'll never get there because you can't rev them past 7,000rpm without them grenading. The rockers WILL snap if you abuse an SR, no matter how well you look after it, and then you end up with pistons hitting valves and all sorts of other unpleasantness. They've got what is quite possibly the worst designed valvetrain ever, not to mention they sound like an athsmatic cow.yno26galant wrote:My brother had a ca18det in a 720 pick up had a full engine rebuild 6 months later it spun a bottom end baring, these engines are way to prone just on 10psi only lasting 6 months. if you wanted to go with an nissan engine go for a sr20det, there alot stronger and can handle heaps of hp on stock internals

Mate had a 910 Bluey with an SR in it. Popped the rockers, in went a new SR with rocker stoppers, it did the same thing. Another SR, again with rocker stoppers, same thing again. He then gave up on the whole tractor engine shebang, threw the SR-related bits in the bin where they belong and went with what was supposed to be an interim engine, which was a fresh rebuilt CA18DE+T. Made 182kw@6700rpm, copped almost daily abuse for 18 months before he finally got around to building the FJ20 he wanted to run in the car, which he only ended up putting in because the CA threw a rod out the side of the block on his way to work one morning.
TL;DR: SR's are shit, and CA's aren't nearly as shit as the internet experts and SRtractor20 fanboys will have you believe, but they're still pretty average.
Basically, forget the Datsun bullshit and go with a 4G63. You want a tough 4cyl that'll take whatever you dish out without complaint, provided you keep to the service intervals? There it is.

Re: ca18 into gd
You want a REAL tough 2L?????
Get a Cosworth...those puppies have been pumping out 500+ HP (in race trim) since the late 80's and were still had more straight line speed than the all mighty Godzilla (sadly the godzilla was a far better all-round car as it was younger and more technically advanced)
I wouldn't call the SR20 a bad engine.....they have proven they're worth....You honestly think would keep using the ingine in ALL of there 4cyl sports cars...for as long as they have??? especially when they have the series of RB engines and the VQ series of V6's???
Only thing i dont like about them is that as soon as you use one of these engines, the fanfare behind you expect you to be making 500kw atw or its not worth looking at (irrespective on what the intention is with the car)
If it were me, i'd use an engine that doesn't have such a cult following (like a rotary or SR20 does)...just to be different, it's much easier to stand out if you don't blend in with the crowd IMO
My 2c worth

Re: ca18 into gd
it was the only race he never actually won......very sad really....1995 really should've been his year.....actually....most years should've been his year lol
but i did like what he did do Dick Johnson (during the EB days)......DJ said on air (i think post race) that Seton had the personality of a speed hump.....so in retaliation, Seton put a bumper sticker on his rear bumper saying "warning! Speed hump ahead"
That's class IMO lol
