Re: Manifold/exhaust advice 1300cc Galant
Thanks for the comments. Yep I'll ask today about just swapping or adding a muffler/resonator. After some more reading about exhausts/mufflers I can see that the muffler does the noise cancelling, whereas the exhaust diameter (area) is more related to the velocity. Given I don't drive it screaming a...

Manifold/exhaust advice 1300cc Galant
Hi, been ages since I posted, but I'm still enjoying driving my 71 GA Galant 1-2 times per week. However, I'm in need of a quieter exhaust set up... I have the 1300cc motor with modified head (enlarged ports), but replaced the very lumpy cam with a stock one. It has a set of long 4 into 1 extractors...

Re: 4G30 Galant: Where is engine number stamped on block?
Thanks Dave. My engine block must have been machined because that flat surface is where I expected it to be, but there ain't no numbers there now...

Re: 4G30 Galant: Where is engine number stamped on block?
Great, thanks. I wonder if mine is hidden by the water pipe or extractors/exhaust manifold. Cheers

4G32 cam in 4G30 - valve clearance fixed
Update. Decided to get some professional help with the head. Inlet valve seat pressure was only 15 lbs due to the longer installed length/height, so after trying a few options, ended up changing the inlet valves out from a Toyota (not sure what model), which matched the larger diameter head, but the...

Re: 4G32 cam in 4G30 - no inlet valve clearance
Yeah thanks, I read that in my Gregory's manual also. Maybe there is just something incorrect about the inlet valve installation or collets/retainer. Seems like a 38mm installed valve spring length would solve my problem.

Re: 4G32 cam in 4G30 - no inlet valve clearance
Interesting thought Dave, of which I have no idea..! Previous owner said valve springs were "shimmed for additional seat pressure", but that shouldn't change spring length. I agree, either the fully closed valve spring length needs to be shorter (new collets?) or more grinding of rocker ar...

Re: 4G32 cam in 4G30 - no inlet valve clearance
Update. Inlet valve spring length (fully closed, rockers removed) about 42mm. Stock 4G32 spring length 38mm. Clearly the valves in my 4G30 engine are longer than stock. Previous owner and engine builder tried to grind inlet rocker arms to provide adequate clearance, however it looks like the valve s...

Re: 4G32 cam in 4G30 - no inlet valve clearance
All good thoughts. My current thought is to measure the valve spring length both with the rockers installed (contact with valve spring) and with them removed. I would think the difference would be approximately how much I would need to grind the rocker arms to allow the inlet valves to fully close. ...

Re: 4G32 cam in 4G30 - no inlet valve clearance
Sorry, I'm not sure. I understand geezer's comment that the spring won't cause the valve to sit higher. Either the valve stem is longer, or something like the collets as you mention. Could it be the valve seat has been ground in the head causing the valve stem to sit higher? Either way, I have a cle...

Re: 4G32 cam in 4G30 - no inlet valve clearance
Thanks, all good suggestions/comments. I will check whether there's a difference between the rocker assembly 32 vs 30. Also I have only checked cylinder 1 clearance, so will go through all of them to check. All the inlet rocker arms appear to have been ground. Yeah I think the engine was intended to...

Re: 4G32 cam in 4G30 - no inlet valve clearance
Hi, yes definitely sure of the rocker installation, I didn't change anything in the rocker arms/springs, all held together when I swapped the camshaft (and arrows pointing forward). I had another look today and it looks like to me the rocker arms on the inlet side have already been ground to allow c...

4G32 cam in 4G30 - no inlet valve clearance..
Well, I managed to install the #1 4G32 cam into my modified 4G30 engine today, and all went well until I checked the valve clearance on #1 cylinder inlet valve. The exhaust valve clearance was ok, but even when the adjustment screw was fully removed the rocker arm was still compressing the inlet val...

Re: 4G32 cam in 4G30?
I pulled out the 4G32 GB cam and it's a number 1. So I plan to try this in my 4G30, even though it has different lift and timing. Will post how it goes! I plan to pull back the timing to 5 deg BTDC as per stock 4G32 spec (currently at 14 deg BTDC). Also I don't think my vacuum advance is working as ...

4G32 cam in 4G30 - no inlet valve clearance
Is the stock 4G32 cam different than 4G30? I think the answer is yes based on the different engine timing specifications in my Gregory's manual. Here's why I want to try it in my 4G30: 1. Current 4G30 has lumpy/unknown cam 2. Dyno/carby specialist measured very low inlet manifold pressure -7mmHg (va...

Re: 4G30 main jets & gasket kit
Update: I just ordered new jets from MikuniOz in Townsville, should arrive this week so I can try them out over the weekend.
I got 4 main jets: Primary 87.5 and 90, Secondary 165 and 167.5. I also got an enrichmentstarter jet 50. Only $6.60 each, not bad.

I opened up my carb last night to check the main jets. the primary jet said "107" and the secondary jet head was blank. so my next step is try to source a few different jet sizes as ive booked in for a diagnostics with a dyno / carby tuner.alternatively it could be the enrichment jet/circu...

4g30 single mikuni/solex main jets
Hi. Any ideas where I can buy main jets for my 4G30 carb? I'm looking to take mine back to standard 1300 jets. Main jets are 0.875mm and 1.65mm according to my Gregory's manual. I plan to take the top cover off tonight to confirm what the current main jet sizes are.

Thanks for the link Dave, yes helpful. In the link you provided someone suggested you can buy the jets from motorbike shops? Maybe I misread it with a quick scan. 4G30 main jets & gasket kit?
So I've decided to give this a go myself just for fun. I can always get a professional to help if it doesn't work... 4G30 engine tuning
Engine tune update: I took it for an engine tune yesterday and found out some other problems. Firstly, the coil wasn't producing high enough energy sparks, so new coil installed. Hey, well I cautiously removed the distributor today, and rotated the rotor shaft by one gear tooth, and after working out that I needed to use a screwdriver to turn the oil pump groove at the bottom of the shaft, managed to get it installed. I checked and re-checked that I had about 10 deg BTDC bef...

Re: 4G30 engine timing issues
By the way, is there any adjustment with the XR700 unit? Or is the dwell angle / spark duration set by the gap size? Or is the shutter gap just a trigger for a pre-selected spark duration? Just curious, never used one before.
