Re: serious timing issue
I'm well aware of the effects of milling the head on cam timing. I modified my cam sprocket to use Chevy offset busings. I degree'd the cam and have it advanced 5° (3.5° for milling and a bit more. I like to advance the cam for more power off the corner) Over the weekend, I pulled the head, checked ...

Re: serious timing issue
I don't know where to find a metric spec timing chain ½ link that could hold up to the speeds/pressure that it would be under. I've had this cam for over 6 years in 2 different motors and never had a problem The head it's in now was in there for 3 years. I finally decided to just mill the snot out o...

serious timing issue
OK, I have been struggling with these 2.6 engines. I've milled .120" off the head. I'm at 11:1 compression. Cam lift is .540" I had to cut valve reliefs .180" deep. I put everything together, start the car and while I am adjusting ignition timing, the engine started making noise and q...

Re: Flat pistons in 2.6 carby
no-one is still giving any answers that I can use. What is a series 1 head vs a series 2 head? how are you guys making 12:1? I've spent about $10,000 on these POS 2.6 engines over the year and I'm down 100hp over what I can build a 2300 ford. first problem with the crappy 2.6 was smoking rod bearing...

Re: Flat pistons in 2.6 carby
the time and cost of welding combustion chambers is rediculous. not only would all the chambers need to be identical in volume but flow characteristics are crucial. then you have to worry about distortion, machining, etc. buy the time it's all done, the cost would easily exceed $6000 USD

Re: Flat pistons in 2.6 carby
I did everything people on here said, cutting toyota pistons, cutting holden pistons, etc. problem is that the angle of the valves with the high lift cams I'm running gets into clearance problems on the pistons. when cutting down the top of a toyota piston (even stock 22re cast) by the time I get th...

Re: Flat pistons in 2.6 carby
I spent over $400 on wiseco toyota pistons like was said to do on here, had them custom machined... only to find there isn't enough distance between the top of the piston and the top ring land. it didn't even make 3 runs on the dyno. but the first 2 runs netted over 250hp. compression ratio came up ...

Re: Flat pistons in 2.6 carby
i race a 2.6 carby engine with flat top pistons. the MAX compression ratio I can achieve is 9:1. I've been struggling to get more for the past year. Not one tip I got on this board worked out to get me more compression.
Re: HELP
Hello, I need to revisit this topic. I was sizing up the toyota pistons. I don't see any way to make it work. by the time I machine down the piston above the ring to clear the head, I have .100" between the top of the piston and ring. that's way to short a distance. Going that low will cause ri...

Re: timing cover removal on 4g54
sorry that all the suggestions were completely useless since everything stated to fix it right was done. sounds like you need a better mechanic because if it was done right, you wouldn't be in this predicament. IDK how someone can say that removing the cover isn't all that difficult. it's a pain in ...

Re: timing cover removal on 4g54
drill out bad hole and use Helicoil (do a google search for what these are). this will restore the threads and allow proper tightening. the only way I've had success removing the front cover is either remove head or oil pan.. both are a lot of work.
Re: timing
I have a weber on my 4G54 and I have my ignition timing set at 36° total advance measured at 3000 rpm
Re: HELP
well, I got the toyota pistons mocked up. I marked where I need valve reliefs and my friend is going to spot face the pistons. I also milled the head 0.120" (3mm). Should around 13:1. I hope this will get me the power I need to compete against those pesky Dodge Neon's
Re: HELP
sent you a PM.
Re: HELP
thank you for the piston information. I picked up some stock toyota pistons. I'll be doing some experimentation and measuring.
If you have a good M9 head, let's talk price.

Re: Should i use hydraulic cam setup or go back to solid?
if you are using the car for performance, definitely go with solid adjusters. I tried hydraulics on my race car and had valve float at 6200. with solid adjusters on the same engine I was able to go past 7500 rpm. I also noticed a lot more power mid range with mechanical adjusters

I use ARP head studs. they are pretty cheap here in the USA... Now if I could get my hands on an M9 kidney shape head. We don't have them here.

Re: spun rod bearing engine #4
my background in engine building is quite satisfactory. I have a large home shop (10,000 sq feet) well equipped . these 2.6 engines have been giving me fits, the last engine made 4 nights racing... but I built another 1qt to the sump and ran 10w30 synthetic. the pan I had came with a lot of baffling...
Re: HELP
your avatar looks just like my race car. Over here it's called a Dodge Challenger or Plymouth Sapporo 1978-1982 was the years available. The most I can make for compression is 9:1. I really need 11½:1 or more to be competative.

Re: spun rod bearing engine #4
what would really help me is the actual part number for the head. Mitsubishi number would start M with a about 6 numbers. If I could get a part number, then maybe I can get a supplier over here in the the US to get me the part.
Re: HELP
no help?
I wish someone could help me with a part number for the M9 head. I go to the Mitsubishi dealers in the US and the responce I get, you'd think I had 2 heads.

as for M8, I keep getting conflicting stories about them being open or closed chamber. but the consensus is all m9's are.

Re: spun rod bearing engine #4
I found I want a Forklift oil pump and drive. it turns slower and has more volume. so far the last engine is working. I built a 6qt oil pan, put an oil restrictor to the the head (.120") and running top quality synthetic oil. Now I need more HP. and the only way to achieve that is with more com...

HELP
Could someone kindly help me locate an M9 head for my 2.6 engine. salvage yard, web page, etc?
I have spent many hours searching but I'm not having any luck. Here in the USA, we have a web page www.car-part.com is there anything like that in Australia?
