OddlyShaded's GA Galant
OddlyShaded's GA Galant
A few weeks ago while chatting to 75glnt, he mentioned that he didnt know what he could do with the GA he had put a deposit down on, and may just let it go. now seeing as my little sister is about to get her P plates i figured i could rescue this car and she would buy it. so after explaining to her the situation she asked me to show her some pictures of one, and sure enough at first she really wasnt a fan, but by the time i had shown her some photo's she was keen to have one. so a deal was made and now this little gem of a car resides on my parents front lawn (much to my mothers disgust )
Its a Pretty standard 1500 4 speed car, its pretty original other than the GD boosted disc brakes up front and a carby change (yoink)
the plan is to tidy it up and fix the small patch of runs on the right guard, then drive it like it was meant to be 40 odd years ago
Pics:
In its hiding place of 8+ years
First bit of sunlight its seen for a while
All loaded up
nice and filthy
Getting a tub
Thats it for now, more to come in the morning
Cheers

Re: Little sis's GA Galant
glad someone can fix it up...
Just for some I for from my side (the guy who found it ).
The lady was the first owner from new. Drove it around until her 1st daughter was old enough to drive. Gave it to her and her boyfriend who fixed it up a bit more (remote boosted brakes, mags, gd strut and disc conversion up front, and the mentioned carb (34adm webber). They had it for 6 months. Then they bought a new car.. Parked the old ga where I found it. Still registered and all. I seen it when I was in yr7. Which was 9 years ago.
I finally got hold of her and asked about it. She wanted $400 so I layed a deposit and.. That was it. I moved, lost contacts etc.. And she is hard to get hold of at her house.
The rest of its story starts here.

Looks complete, looks neat...good to see another one being brought out of an undignified retirement.
Re: Little sis's GA Galant
Yea it had a small amount of rust In the rear 1/4s. A tad in the front right 1/4. A touch of surface rust on the roof due to a spot of peeled paint. And a few tiny little spots of surface rust here and there.
Interior has seen better days.. But it's fixable..
And as a spotters fee I'm swapping my gb seats, for the low back ones from this.. So.. We all win
Overall a very good start for a what will be a good daily

Thanks guys, currently my sister is on a bit of a cleaning spree, while i am getting ready to give the motor a kick in the guts to see how it is.
And it has been named, when my sister first seen the photo of us towing it on the back of the truck she laughed and said it looked grumpy that we had moved it from its den. and with a little help from a sticker on the rear garnish the full name was made up
He is now dubbed Grumpy Al
photo dump:
More to come

Re: Little sis's GA Galant
Lol only this one, was hoping to get more but got busy. Having issues getting it to turn over, turned twice now it's not turning, possibly seized
Re: Little sis's GA Galant
Throw some diesel down the spark plug holes and leave it for the day.. Works for old slant 6's

Re: Little sis's GA Galant
haha may have to try that, had a look at the oil and its alot better than the oil in the 1600 in the coupe. i have a feeling that the starter is locked up, hence why it turned twice then stopped. i will be doing some more investigating later this week, my next lot of spare time has to go into the coupe, need to clean it out and get started on stopping the rust.
Re: Little sis's GA Galant
For a cheap and easy option.. Use sump oil, or cheap engine oil..

Re: Little sis's GA Galant
Ditto with the diesel.
Did you try turning it by hand? Probably a silly question but thought I'd ask.
Awesome littler find man. It's great doin up a first car with ya little sis.
I did this about 20 yrs ago, with my lil sis. I gave her my old Cortina wags for her 16th, then helped her fix it for rego for when she got her Ps.

Re: Little sis's GA Galant
Pity about the interior trims....but 'all 'n' all', that's looking like a very good and solid starting point for a project.
It's great to see the gals getting involved with their own prject cars also
Great find!

Re: Little sis's GA Galant
Thanks guys, the original chrome ones were majorly pitted, hence the swap, full chrome ones would look better but this is all i have spare at the moment.
Got the sparkplugs out, took alot of effort, they were pretty hard to get out, first two cylinders look ok, three and four dont look promising though
3
and 4 (not so bad, still not good though)\
so i have poured some diesel down there and we will see how it goes, with all that gunk though i cant help but think he was parked up after a critical engine failure now
Also some good news
Grumpy Al has been branded
Cheers

Re: Little sis's GA Galant

Re: Little sis's GA Galant
could you remove the head and send a thread repair tap through a couple of times??????
Could always have the head ported and polished and set up with O/S valves with a 3 angle grind in them

Re: Little sis's GA Galant
thats what i meant.....if its just gunk blocking the port.....you could fill the port with a rust-off solution and send the tap through to clean the thread

Re: Little sis's GA Galant
no thut stuff you see in there is all wet and mushy not sure what to do, going to show my father tonight and we will either make the decision to see whats up with it or to just dump a spare 1.6 in it

Re: Little sis's GA Galant
you can carefully drill a very small pilot holes in the middle of that port...then gradully open up the pilot hole with slightly bigger drill bits.....until you just about touch the thread.....then blast it with WD-40, Rust off, compressed air, thread tap....anything you got
