Enging swap options
Enging swap options
Hi,
What engines are a direct straight bolt in for a GD Galant.
I think its got the standard 1.6? minus head and intake/exhaust manifold.
Im figuring they arent the easiest to get hold of, so what options do i have for a straight drop in job?
I dont want to modify anything really... Want it as pain free as possible to get her moving.

Re: Enging swap options
Manual sorry.... Havent checked but assuming 4speed.
Just need to know what i need to get her driving ASAP so i can take it over the pits and see what they say.
Its got a block in there, but its relatively bare, so im better off buying a compete motor i think

Re: Enging swap options
Cheapest and easiest option would be to chuck in a 2.0 4G52 out of a Sigma. All that will need changing is the alternator wire and get the front of the exhaust matched up.
If you get one with a flywheel your 4 speed and clutch will bolt right up to the 2.0 flywheel.
That is of course if no one has a 1.6 4G32 around they will sell for cheap.

Re: Enging swap options
Awesome cheers mate!
What about l300 engines? Or 2.6 sigmas?
There's no 2ltrs on gumtree at the moment lol.
Any other models I can get a motor from?

Re: Enging swap options
The L300 should be okay, they did run 1600's early on so could be a direct fit.
2.6's are a pretty straight fit BUT, most of the RWD 2.6's were wide block, so won't fit up to your gearbox. If you find a narrow block 2.6 it will fit up the same as the 2.0.
I am not sure about the SOHC 4G63's fitted to L200's and L300's and what needs to be swapped to fit one up but I do think they are wide blocks, so again won't fit your gearbox.

Re: Enging swap options
How do I know if its wide or narrow block?
Re: Enging swap options
This link will tell you the differences and how to measure. What it doesn't say is that ALL FWD 2.6's (Magna) are narrow block.

Re: Enging swap options
Awesome!! Cheers that's perfect
Will fwd bolt straight in? Or anything different?

Re: Enging swap options
Alright just to double check some information.
Currently the car has a gearbox, block etc but is missing bolt ons (head, waterpump, exhaust and intake).
Even if I get a wide block, can I use my gearbox with new bellhousing?
Don't want to buy something that won't work lol

Re: Enging swap options
If you want something cheap.. I suggest a complete sigma. Throw the engine and box in it. As stated above. Some small mods are required, but it's cheap. There's a few gj,k,n sigmas on gumtree for $300 and under. Might score something good there?
N/A ALL THE WAY
Re: Enging swap options

Re: Enging swap options
GE or GH sigma/scorp would be better.75glnt wrote:If you want something cheap.. I suggest a complete sigma. Throw the engine and box in it. As stated above. Some small mods are required, but it's cheap. There's a few gj,k,n sigmas on gumtree for $300 and under. Might score something good there?
They have a shorter gearbox extension housing so the hole in the floor shouldn't need modifying.
Any 2.0l Astron OR a 2.6L Astron that was running an auto will bolt up to your existing gearbox with no mods. The FWD Astron out of a magna would require a bit of work and parts to fit.A112H wrote:Cheapest and easiest option would be to chuck in a 2.0 4G52 out of a Sigma. Easiest option would be to find any running Manual 2.0L Sigma and swap the engine straight in with your existing gearbox. That way you get the flywheel as well.
Next easiest option would be a GE or GH Sigma/Scorpion with a manual JAP gearbox, preferably a 5 speed. I think the tailshaft may have to be shortened but I'm not sure.
A Magna Block would require a bit more work.
Parts (off a GN Sigma block)
1. Front timing cover.
2. Crank pulley.
3. Sump.
4. Oil pickup.
5. Inlet manifold.
The timing cover will need to be modified to fit the magna oil pump, just a bit of cutting/grinding, nothing hard.
A section will need to be welded above the rear water port on the RWD inlet manifold to be able to seal the port. This would also require a bit of machining to level it correctly.
Food for thought.
Cheers.
Re: Enging swap options
Great info thanks mate. Pretty much closes the 2.6 idea lol, would defeat the purpose of this.... 2ltr sigma it is. Cheers!
Re: Enging swap options
Another question for you guys,
Will the sump off a 1.6 fit a 2.6?
Will the sump off a 1.6 fit a 2.6?
Re: Enging swap options
Nope, I'm pretty sure they aren't interchangeable.
Re: Enging swap options
No they don't. You will only need to change the sump if you are using a FWD engine. The sump from RWD Astrons, either 2.0 or 2.6, will be fine in your Galant.
Re: Enging swap options
Appears the 2.6 option is too hard in this instance lol
Thanks everyone for your help...
Now i just need to find a 2ltr, which is appearing impossible
