help identifying my gearbox
help identifying my gearbox
hey guys, i'm wondering if anyone can help me out? i've read the topic "how to identify jap from borg". and it's none of them. all i know so far is ithe shifter is held on by 3 screws in a tringle plate, no other plates after. not sure how many sections, and im pretty sure the belhousing is removable from the main box. to select reverse. i have to have it in the middle of the neutral position (under 3rd). press down on the stick and move across to the right, then down (under 5th, right of 4th).
Cheers,
Mick

Re: help identifying my gearbox
Is the bell housing bolted to the case or one piece?
Re: help identifying my gearbox
right. so i had as much of a look as i can without taking the lot out! i cant even get my head under my sills :/ its kinda like a jab box. belhousing is connected permanently. it has a weight on the back of the box (under the spline) has a lot of cast groving over it all. if it helps at all? it's all blue. it has a flat bottom that unbolts (same as a jap) but the bolt is in the dead centre. i shouldve checked for tags and numbers!

Re: help identifying my gearbox
only thing i found was a number 5 on the pasenger side, and a no symbol. as in "no smoking" circle with a diagonal line. oh, and the speedo cable is on the pasenger side. hope it helps

oh, i almost forgot! its for both wide and narrow blocks!

Re: help identifying my gearbox
how can that be?? Bellhousing sizes are completely different.75glnt wrote:oh, i almost forgot! its for both wide and narrow blocks!
at a guess i would say it is a Jap 5spd. pix would help.

Re: help identifying my gearbox
theres another hole that matches the measurements of a wide block. i may be wrong in this bit, but that's what it looks like (to my untrained eyes) i'll try and find my only pics i have.

Re: help identifying my gearbox
ok, now i'm thinking it is a jap 5. but the reverse is selected differently??

Re: help identifying my gearbox
you mean the top left (inlet side) there are two holes next to each other??
that is for 1300-1600 inner and 1850-2600 (narrow) outer bolt hole.
Its just an early Jap 5spd out of a Lancer or GE/H Sigma.

Re: help identifying my gearbox
hmmm, the photos don't show it, but im sure there's a spot where the belhousing pokes out further that the block on the outlet side by a substantial amount. over 50mm. and again. the reverse selcetion? is it the same as the older japs?
thanks for this guys

Re: help identifying my gearbox
Looks like a standard 5 speed Jap box .... Rev under 5th is normal.
Question - Has the tunnel in the Galant been cut to fit the shifter ? If not, and the shifter fits up through the stock hole in the body, it's probably an imported 5 speed JDM Galant/Lancer box (rather than Sigma or LC Lancer) ... same as the one I have. What's the length from the front of the bellhousing to the shifter ?

Re: help identifying my gearbox
dont know the length. but yea its completely butchered! the guys who had it somewhere before me butchered the crap out of the car! wiring, nuts and bolts stripped threaded and cross threaded. body pannels cut up and bogged. just a bloody mess. back on topic. when i said the reverse selection, i know its usually under 5th, but i meant the push then to reverse. i thought the japs were a standard style h-h pattern?

Re: help identifying my gearbox
So, you have to push down on the shifter to select reverse? That's normal, both of my Jap 'boxes are like that.
Should be
1 3 5
2 4 R
If it's a Jap 5spd, which is what it looks like to me.

Re: help identifying my gearbox
oh ok. thanks guys. so its a jap 5sp. how strong are they? good enough to hold 200 hp and a clutch dump?
N/A ALL THE WAY
Re: help identifying my gearbox
200hp at the flywheel or the tyres?
Stronger than the Sigma Borg-Warner 5spd by a good long way, that's for sure.
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that they're good for ~150rwkw if you're gentle, but someone more knowledgeable than me will have to confirm that. So clutch dumps might be a bad idea.

Re: help identifying my gearbox
Clutch dumps in a Galant are a bad idea. Think you have felt axle tramp before? Try side stepping the clutch in a Gally, lol
Re: help identifying my gearbox
not sure about the bhp or rwhp, im nearly certain its 124rwkw. that makes aprox 160hp? 75kw-100hp is the equation?
and the only time ive dumped the clutch so far, it wasnt exactly "dumped" more a quick release. and yes, axle tramped like a bitch! so, im looking at a 10 bolt lux diff (or possibly a scorp diff? whichever is easiest-strongest) with tramp rods

Re: help identifying my gearbox
when I dump the clutch in my hardtop it just fries the right hand tyre, no axle tramp lol
