factory turbo carb cd 175
how many blokes out there with factory gh turbos,or factory set ups in there sigmas /galants still run the cd 175 carb,and what is there opinion tips and general advice,

ive never used them but i have a pair of cd175's off a volvo if anyone needs them for parts
i remember hearing they could be a bit of a fire hazard if you arent carefull.. fuel overflows through the vents or something?
theyre not fail-safe.. theyre fail-burn your car down

I had one on my sigma turbo some years back.
You can get good power out of one...if its set up right and there are a few mods you can do on one to get more...like everything i guess!
You'll need to get it recoed to start with and then find a dyno tuner that knows them for setting up at a certain psi...if you're in Bris I cd tell you of 2 places .
After that , with normal/spirited driving you'll get to know what may be wrong depending on the symptoms when she doesn't run right (or not at all)...and theres a few fellas on here that can help you if you get stuck too..

thanks leoca64 both my sigmas have the cd175,s one carby is 95% good but my other is in need of attention ,having only being accustomed to awebber suck through set up,is why i am asking as i know what the webber can or cant do,and the few people that i ask dont give me any reassurance ,but hearing that comment about burn your car down doesent inspire me at all ,although i wont drive the car much maybe 3 times a month,i certainly dont want it to catch fire ,just want to know if its worth to keep and set up properly ,with only regular tuning adjustments,or when the time comes to just go the simple proven webber set up,with bigger lines pump ect,as this is very effective and does give good gains in hp and huge fuel bills would like to hear some other opinions or even places in sydney ,before i enquire out of nsw ,that people may know of that can refurbish these carbs properly ,it would be nice to keep this carb all factory with air box if possible,definitely do not want to go injection ,thanks for any advice or comments

ive never heard of anyones car actually been burned... but if the needle and seat gets jammed open... the float gets stuck... if the fuel bowl floods for any reason its got a fuel vent/overflow thats open to atmospher... im pretty sure from factory they come with a drip tray underneath them for that reason, i dont know but i wouldnt want any potential fuel leaking/puddling problems on the exhaust side of my engine from something thats mounted to the mouth of my turbo... a well maintained cd175 shouldnt be a problem though.. all the more reason to get it kitted
if i had a matching numbers sigma turbo id be crazy not to use a cd175... but i think there are better/safer alternatives

p.s. id like to see you make a dcoe webber to v-band flange manifold and put a 45mm webber or two in front of the turbo

i will definitely go about refurbishing the carby PROPERLY but run an electric pump ,i have been told that 3 psi fuel pressure is about right no more no less for this carby? please correct if im wrong,out of interest what type of mods /upgrades do they do to them to make them perform better i purchased one as parts from hemi26 and it had been machined inside the throat,never used it as it was just for spares,il see how this pans out.

My car spends it's life resting in the shed but it's all original and has the original CD175. After sitting for a while it's a nightmare to start and a pain in the backside when cold. I had it reconditioned as I was chasing a starting problem and the carby guy said they are simple and reliable. As long as the diaphram is intact and the piston moves, basically the car will run. My problem turned out to be something else ( vaccum leak in front of the turbo ) so the carby didn't need fixing after all.

I've seen a couple of Turbo cars burnt from 175CD carbies from flooding. They flood the bowl and spray out the vent over the exhaust manifold. thanks for all the feed back guys,SHIFTA ,ROB ,GMH,like i said my knowlege is very limited on this carb,hence why i mentioned the webber,although i dnt know about running 2 of them like rob said,but back to the cd175 if the carb is fully rebuilt correctly and is getting correct amount of fuel ect,ant tuned on a dyno there should be no problems apart from routine tuning ect,the carb on my blue gh works well and i havent touched it,it just looks a bit old on the outside that engine has a magna head t3/4 turbo the few times ive driven its never detonated or leaned out on me,so they gotta be decent carbs when operating 100% ,, do the guys using these carbs run electric fuel pumps as my blue gh has a pierberg pump but my other gh has the factory mechanical pump thanks again for the info guys.

You only need an electric pump if you are running more boost than the fuel flow can handle. The main probs with the CD carbies are the diaphram stiffening or having a leak and the needle wearing out.
The single 45 webber can put out some stout performances compared to the CD. My brother ran a 2lt escort with a TO4b and a 45 webber with 25psi boost and did 11.0's at 128mph in a full steet trim but with slicks. And I have found they run very snappy in the throttle response compared to the cd's but are difficult to tune and chew the fuel. I ran 4 CD's on a twin turbo V8 charger which put out 500hp ON 15PSI but found it a problem to get good throttle responce.Had to use thicker oil to stop the flat spot.

yeah i dunno why we dont see them more as its a pretty trick setup, its popular amongst triumph and mg owners i guess they're a little more pedantic about originality than the average sigma owner
I was going to order just the adapter injector and TPS and then source the other parts locally and run a fuel only microtech lt4, should be able to use an efi 2.6 magna dizzy for an injector trigger (correct me if im wrong)

sounds silly but does the magna efi dizzy fit onto a s1 astron head? buy the way thats the easiest efi conversion i have seen,
