Frankenstein's Monster- '81 Scorpion

Post by webby »

OK, I was selling the GJ but I just can't seem to let go of it :D so I'm going to throw a good set of tyres on it, new muffler, general tidy up and hopefully have it rego'd in time for the next Sydney cruise in December.
A few pics:
The car itself
Image
Dirty old Astron I, it'll be getting a Magna bottom end and a Falcon carby soon
Image
Image
Image
Image
The rims I'll be putting on it, bit dirty atm 'cos I got them off my paddock basher lol but they should come up sweet with a bit of elbow grease and some paint. They're 14x6 with an offset of +18
Image
auto dash with a working reverse indicator :P
Image
Newish clutch for narrow block, it'll come in useful for the high comp motor as it's using a complete Magna bottom end. I fully expect to destroy it very quickly, it's a temporary solution until I can afford a HD clutch
Image
My stereo setup, minus the Fusion 6.5in 2-ways and 10-stacker. I've got a different head deck now as the one in the pic didn't work lol
Image
I might do some fiddling with a GL grille and try and get it to suit the quad light front end on the car. Something like this:
Image
I've got six weeks to get together approx. $450 for the rego. With my driving history (1 at-fault crash, 3 points lost) a 6-month greenslip is gonna cost me $261 plus around $160-180 rego fees. Then I can go on the next Sydney cruise :D
Cheers guys

Since I've bought the car I've rebuilt the diff, put new bushes in the rear end and fixed the shifter (it was held in with two VERY loose bolts with the third snapped off and the bush was completely flogged out. And the bloke who had it before me was supposed to be a mechanic :o ).
I've noticed from the pictures it needs a bit more offset on the rear 'coz it looks like the rear track is about 30mm narrower than the front.
Anyway, I've got a few TM-TP bottom ends sitting around here in various states of disrepair, and I've been toying with the idea of dropping the head off my current motor on one of the better ones as an alternative to a turbo motor until I'm off my P's.
The head was rebuilt just before I got the car with a new Crow standard cam, Crow uprated springs, new Mitsubishi valves, new lifters and the ports got a birthday as well. It's got less than 500km on it :D
The best of my Magna short blocks was rebuilt 45,000km ago with 20thou oversize genuine Mitsubishi pistons, gapless rings and new bearings. I'll probably use one of the numerous rebuilt 34ADM carbies in the shed for the intake side of things and a 2.25in axle back exhaust.
I'm going with this over EFI because I've got all the parts in reasonably good order, the only expenses will be for head and intake manifold gaskets (I've got the rest :D ) plus the exhaust so I can afford it, even on the paltry $40 a fortnight my debts to the SDRO and ActewAGL plus my board at Nan's leave me.
It should have enough poke to shove a 1200kg GJ down the road/track/strip at a fair rate of knots, more than enough to get me into trouble anyway :P
Anyway, if you've got any tips or advice feel free to post it, I need it lol
Cheers guys
Josh

This is staying in my posession a while yet, folks :D
I'm going to try and fab up some rear coilovers using TM-TP Magna rear struts. Should be interesting :P

I did some playing around with the car last time I was out at my parent's place.
Pics:
New rims
Image

Rattly exhaust, I need more welding practice lol
Image

Rears, 14x6 +18 Hotwires
Image

Fronts, 14x5.5 +24 GE Scorpion stockies
Image

Needs a wash lol
Image

I need to sort the the blown power steering (swapping to manual), the leaky brake master cylinder, the rattly exhaust and maybe the 4WD-spec ride height then save some monies for a blue slip and rego. Hopefully that's all done before the next cruise so I can come along :D

Would be good for you to come along, Feb cruise will be in Wollongong or at least south of Sydney. I'm hoping someone who is local to that area will either help me, or organise the cruise themselves.
I've got no idea where to meet, or where to go. So long as it's good for getting group shots.

Can't help with that, sorry :P
Anyways, I've been looking on the Japanese Yahoo Auctions for rims and came across these: http://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/125419132
15x8.5 -7 SSR Mesh for the lazy kents
I'm thinking these'd go good on the back, with a pair of 15x7.5 +-0 on the front.
Thoughts?

They are some of the nicest looking rims I've seen.
They would look awesome on a scorp.

BTW, I wasn't asking you to organise the Wollongong cruise, just saying I will need help with that one

Re: The GJ (mark II)

I've been tossing up a few ideas, but as I know barely enough to get along I figured I'd ask some questions of the smart people before I wreck my car :P
One: ITB's. I'm thinking of cutting down a Magna manifold (or getting one made up) to run a set of 4AGE 20v ITB's, or maybe even a set of 50mm Magna throttles, and run the whole shebang with an LT-2 or something. This would be on a rebuilt 2.6 running ~10:1 with an M7 head and a mid-sized cam.
Two: Rear coilovers. I know I'll need to reinforce the rear shock mount, but are there any problems with angles etc. that I should be worried about?

Convert to manual steering, new shifter bushing, tyres, fix a leak at the brake m/cyl, stock rear muffler (it's fucking loud lol) and a general cleanup
My gearbox whines like a bitch in 1st and I've got a noisy lifter, so I hope Dad's rego guy won't pull me up on those. Hopefully he misses the locker too :P
My grille's broken too (due to a fucking duck, no less), so I don't have one :P
Anyone got a GL Scorpion grille?

You need a pitman arm puller to get it off the steering box itself, but the other end should come off (once the split pin and castellated nut are off, of course)

ooo oooo i know this one :) bash the crap out of it with a hammer. or a sledge hammer if your acurate enough. thats what i do. you need to crack it. seriously. . i've used pitan arm pullers and the like. a hammer works fine. in fack it works best for me.

heres a pic of what to hit :) bash it with a hammer and it'll pop off :)

Image

when putting it back on also hit it up into the rack or the bolt will turn as you do up the nut.
