VR4 RWD flywheel options... any help+info Please!

Post by Philbaggins »

Hey People,
Ive posted in the wanted section for a 2 Litre flywheel but not having much luck yet, I just wanted to know if there are any other flywheel options for the VR4 RWD conversion. Ive been trying to search on here and google but im getting a little frustrated.

Basically I need some insight, can i use a narrow 4g63 RWD flywheel (L300 van) sirrus 1.8 or cordia or similar?
I had an L300 van years ago that was originally a sirrus 1.8, the old dude that had it before me was an engineer, he had put a wide 4g63 in it with a wide to narrow block adaptor, and a crank spacer that he had made! (same thickness as the adaptor) it had longer flywheel bolts to suit! pretty cool.
Anyway, that had a six bolt flywheel, so would it have been the original 1.8 flywheel? or would he have got a sigma one? I later used this flywheel with a narrow 2.6 in the van.. so if it was six bolt i could use it with the VR4 surely.... (if it wasnt sigma?)

Some say you cant use the FWD VR4 flywheel, someone on here says they used it fine RWD?? what is the differences between them?
Extreme do a lightened moly flywheel for the six bolt VR4 cranks so if they could be used that would be killa! looking at the pictures they also seem to have more clutch surface area than a sigma flywheel too, also an advantage

Any info would be greatly appriciated
Cheers!

4g63 - EVO flywheel = 300mm DIA (7bolt)
4g63 - FWD flywheel= 280mm DIA (6 & 7 bolt)
4g63 - AWD flywheel= 270mm DIA (6 & 7 bolt)
4g63 - RWD fllwheel = 280mm DIA (6 bolt)

You need the 280mm flywheel if your using a stock RWD gearbox/starter motor setup?

Im changing to a 270mm FW in the near future and wont be needing my 280mm FW.

How soon do you need a FW?

i measured my standard 5 bolt flywheel off of my standard 4g32 and it was 290mm from tooth tip to tooth tip, i rang mitsubishi spare parts specialist in Brisbane and they confirmed that i would need a 290mm out of l300 but they had none and very rarely see them, i gave them my name and number to ring me when they get one and that was about a month ago, i ended up taking my 5 bolt flywheel down to the local wreckers and found a random flywheel in the nissan section with 6 bolt and pretty much identicle to the 5 bolt one, still have know idea what its out of but it works maybe it could have been a l300 in the wrong place but it also had 4x4 on it make me think it was out of a small truck or utility but i have know idea
here vid of the random flywheel installed

the sound quality is a bit out but you get the idea

i think the the smaller awd flywheel is needed for the adaptor bell houses so i will be keeping the spare won that ive got as will be changing to something alot stronger then the 4 spd
