astron clutch differences? wide VS narrow

Post by astronturbo77 »

Ok so ive got a bit of a technical question... Got a phone call today from the manager at the local repco store, asking if i want a performance clutch kit for my astron engine.... he goes on to tell me that he got it cheap because it was ordered in and never picked up, and he has a magna with a slipping clutch but it dosen't fit.

Apparently its a RPM branded jobbie, solid center clutch plate and is a heavy duty item.... But he has no idea if its for a narrow of wide engine or the exact model or sigma it is for, all he said is " it dont fit a magna, but is ment for a magna or triton. Well all magna's are narrow and most tritons are wide block...

So this has got me wondering, i know that the flywheel and clutch appears to be of a larger diameter for the wide block engine. can anyone measure the pressure plate diameter or both narrow and wide for me? also the number of splines in each clutch plate? I havent got direct access to my car to measure it all up.

Well I suppose they would be as I have had an original 4 speed, Lancer 5 speed, and 2ltr 5 speed all bolted up to the same clutch on my wagon.

Where do you want the measurements from and too?

Well this is what I found

Narrow:
Pressure plate width: 255mm
Plate Spline ID: 19mm

Wide:
Pressure plate width: 285mm
Plate Spline ID: 23mm

These measurements are inaccurate (so don't quote them), but show obvious difference.

Pressure plate not the clutch plate itself.
I couldn't measure the clutch plate itself on the 2.6 wideblock as it was still fitted to the flywheel.
Also the plate spline ID is measured on the clutch plate's smallest measurement in the spline.

If you want to know number of splines of wide block borg & jap or narrow jap I've got a few things to count in the shed if need be
