Sigma camshaft wear

Post by nedk »

Hey all, am new to this stuff but am lost and looking for answers.

im having camshafts wearing lobes and my solid rockers scuffing real quick too.(4g54)
am running a wade 565a cam, n have raced (speedway)with it for 8 years. after a recent rebuild/new engine i went with the crow double springs which i think rest with about 110p and about 250 at the nose.
i went back to standard springs but still having problems.

the marks were only minor so i linished them back and tried again.
tried new rockers and a standard cam, still wore.
have oodles of oil pressure and its getting to where it should. have also been onto castol race oil specialists to eliminate any wrong oil issues.

i guess what im asking is once my cam or rockers show wear am i just chasing my tail by linishing them?
the valve springs wernt the problem it just made wear happen faster.

before i set fire to the thing just thought ide give this a try.
thanks

i dont think you should be linishing them as it may be removing the hardening...

just a bit more info,
on new engine start up, ide also converted from a holley to efi (stinger ecu) and the injectors i had serviced wernt done right and 3 were blocked so had issues and probably marked the cam before it fired. on the dyno we found it marked 2 lobes and we linnished them back to get it tuned. made 180hp with 1000ftp of torque. but after racing one night, thought ide check tappets and found more wear.
from looking round on here, it seem solild tappets still seem to be the way to go, so am just planing to try another set of new tappets and either repair and re harden or replace my cam.

if i go new cam anyone got suggestions on a profile?
this is what i got. 565a is 343" lift at lobe(once had), ex 85-45deg, in 44-72deg

hey i see lots of guys reading this, give me some feed back as im outa ideas

A couple of things
1. Did you linish the rocker pads as well the 2nd time?
2. What oil are you using?

Most new petrol engine oils won't protect you from "slipper" cam lobe wear BUT most oils for diesel engines do.
I use Rimula-X which is 15-40. It seems to work very well.

Another thing to look at is having the cam nickel-teflon coated.

Cheers.

i was using a fuchs titan gt plus 20w50, after chatting to oil reps they emailed me article called 'Modern Oils in Older Engines'
Neil McTavish – Australian Automotive Technology Manager Castrol. goes into what you mention, and how the molecules work.

this was how it ended
If a full synthetic engine oil is preferred then our Castrol Edge 0W-40 or Edge
Sport 10W-60 is recommended. Again these are formulated to 0.10%
Phosphorus maximum and can be used with flat tappet followers with confidence
the same as Edge Sport 25W-50.

and yeah i got the rockers looking like new, from what ive been told they are the same hardness all the way threw.
was also recommend to use a Castrol grease called SBX2 for start up protection on new cam.

decided ide gone too far to take to it with matches, and threw all bar the kitchen sink at it instead
so just for an update, have had cam to tighes, re profiled and tuffride, new secondhand rockers, went with castrols recomindations with oil n start up procedure.
played with different valve spring combos, the crow doubles came to about 100p installed n 260p @.450. so went back to single with 3mm washers, got me to about 80p installed n 170p@.450.
so no wear so far, loading up so ill get it back to dyno next week, will post some numbers.
may just have solved it, but cant say what it was!

hey well i think im on top of it, home from dyno tonight, no wear touch wood....
i honestly dont know the exact problem, still think it was a multiple of issues, would recommend not just trusting crow doubles to be what they say they are, were alot heavier than we thought.
i dont know if you believe in the engine gods but while reassembling i found the bracket that hold the cam gear up when its off had come loose and that bolt was on its way out. so that would have been very messy!
we gained 2hp but lost some torque. also lifted power curve 500rpms. so round 182rwhp. race sat night at gympie if rain holds off.
i can post the article from castrol oils if anyones interested.
