Wheels sizes?

Post by 75wagon »

I am looking at options for wheels for my Lancer hatch.
So I drop in on a local tyre place this afternoon.
I asked about what rims they have that can suit my needs? I have started inquiring about 15x7's and 15x8's that are modern looking drift type wheels (pref black but irrelevant).
I prefer the look of Rota grids (like this)
Image

Anyway they ask me what size tyre I was planing on running. So I state, 195 50 15's.
They went all legal on me and said that they wont do it (insert more but couldn't be bothered typing it all) as they will be liable if anything goes wrong so they wont touch it.
They looked in there little book and it said the minimum size of tyre for an 8 inch rim is 225.

Just after peoples opinions and suggestions on what or which way I should go.
I really want to fit large offset wheels to fill out the guards (they are huge).
I'm prepared to go to say $1500 for wheels and tyres, anything less would be good, but I'm being optimistic (I think?)

Nice wheels, and pretty light from what I know. As much as we like to fill our guards right up with wheel size you have to remember you loose bottom end the larger the diameter you go. Some people care, some people dont. But its a fact.

Shame they don't make them in the size you are after. They are a really good looking rim and I think they would look really good on the LC in the bronze colour.

It's a 4G32, what bottom end?

Shouldn't a 15 with a 50 series tyre be just below the rolling radius of a 75 series 13?

Does anyone know of a rim that looks anything like the one pictured above that I can get in a 15?

hi there dave,

there little book is pretty incorrect, ive got 215/35/19 on my sigma,so how could 225 be the minimum?? there 19x8 all round..i purchased my tyres from the states and there on the way as we speak(now that the aussie dollar is good)..i reckon try get wheels and tyres from the states, they will have everything you need, and any size.my mate found it bloody hard to get 18's for his rx3 sedan, but in the states it was no worries but still not much options, and payed inc postage $1200 to his door.the wheels are getting painted in 2pac black, not stayin yellow!

How good do these look in black?

I've sent away a question about whether they think these will fit my car and what price delivered to my door?

That sounds great. I'm interested.

What series tyre would I have to run in a 16 to have the same rolling radius as a 165 75 13?

Thanks Superscan, I've seen most of those wheels, the 15 inch rota RB's aren't appealing to me.
The 16 inch rota grids is the same page as I listed above.
Problem is, I don't want to go 16's, I just think they are too big.
This car will be, and is a daily driver, and I like my kidneys the way they are..... working.

15's are as big I as I want to go. If I can't buy something I really like, and I mean really like, then I'm just not going to spend that sort of coin.

There are these Rota Grids available in 15x7 inch
Image Image

Size Bolt Pattern Offset
15 x 7 5 x 100 +45
15 x 7 4 x 114.3 +45
15 x 7 4 x 100 +45
16 x 7 5 x 114.3 +45

But at +45, so that means I would need bolt on spacers, and they don't look anywhere near as good as the +10's or the +20's.

165 75/13 = 57.77cm= @60kph - 80kph - 100kph
195 50/16 = 60.14cm = @62.46kph - 83.28kph - 104.1kph
205 45/16 = 59.09cm = @61.37k - 81.83k - 102.28k
215 40/16 = 57.84cm = @60.07k - 80.1k - 100.12k
205 50/15 = 58.6cm = @60.86k - 81.15k - 101.44k
195 50/15 = 57.6cm = @59.82k - 79.76k - 99.71k

+45 offset id way off mate, you would want +15-20 on the front and +5-20 on the back
Hope this helps Dave

Best thing this side of actual Watanabe's IMO :)

There's also Rays TE37V, but they can be pretty expensive. I've seen sets of 14x7 +-0 go for $1k second hand

I went to the Toyshop this afternoon. No luck they don't bother with 4 stud rims, they do get the odd occasional S13 rim, but the bloke there said they are +35 (I don't think the bloke knows how to measure offset after talking to him).

I stopped into my local wheel tyre place today (a different one then yesterday). They were more then willing to give me a hand.
Looks like 15's are out for deep dish in a drift style rim

After talking to them, they are making a call to a Australian Rota distributor, they will call me back tomorrow.
Looking at the 16x8's with 205 45 16's on them. I actually can't believe how reasonable the tyre prices are in that size.

Looking forward to hearing some feedback to see what it'll all cost?

15's are easy enough to get, you may have to get creative in obtaining them though as decent wheels in nice offsets aren't commonly sold here by official distributors. Try putting ads up on AE86DC and Auszoku, trawl Yahoo Japan, talk to Performance about Superlites etc
You can still get some of the old school designs through the manufacturers, SSR Mark I/II/III, Hayashi Street, Watanabe RS-8 etc but they can be pricey. A set of new Mark III's in 14x8 and 9 will set you back around $3k landed iirc
I'd steer away from Rota's IMO, there are just to many pics floating around the interwebs of Rotas that have torn the centre clean out of the rim for me to trust them tbh.
Edit: just found these, may be sort of what you're after? http://www.toymods.org.au/forums/showthread.php?t=63578

Got a call back from the wheel place today. The bloke said he spoke to the Australian Rota distributor. Apparently these rims are not available in this pcd anymore :@ \

ottomoto do rotas, spoke to a guy there about 8 months ago about grids and rb's and he said 15x7 was the only
size just as you stated earlier in 15's.

as for "stretching" tyres, just ask around. mine were done in port macquarie at a normal tyre shop
they wanted to do 185/45/15's but that would be just a little too much in my opinion...

bit too much lol

I was told that stretched tyres will pop the beads off at high speed cornering speeds (read as G forces). The first shop said they would touch it.

I am onto a secondhand set of 16x8 +10 Rota grids
I'm going to trial fit them? I'll see how they go
Should happen Sunday? If all goes well...

there will be pics....

Oh BTW, what I have learned from this so far?
People should seriously learn how to measure offset of rims. Hopefully my doing this should help others. But if it's a secondhand rim, as I've learnt, offset can be measured in any kind of random way?

That's only true in extreme cases, IE 195/50/15 on a 15x11, and even then only if you hit something or don't have enough pressure in the tyre
With the negligible amount you're looking at it will be just as safe as not having them stretched.
EDIT: For example, this is running 195/55 on 15x8.5 up front, 205/50 on 15x10 on the rear and AFAIK has only ever popped two tyres off due to smacking the ripple strips a bit hard at QR. So 195/50 on an 8 will be safe as houses on a daily

That ad:
hey all, for sale is my set of 4 2-piece IMPUL promesh wheels, they are 15'X7', PCD is 4 X 114.3 and offset is +20
they have tyres on them, all of which are legal, but only just.
2 Pirelli P7's (205/55R15)
2 Falken Ziex's
there is no gutter rash and they are in good condition, centre could do with a lick of paint but are still quite nice.
only thing missing are the centre caps, but to prove the "Genuineness" IMPUL is stamped into the back of the centre pieces and into every nut.
pick up only in Campbelltown NSW as my car is not on the road

Well I ended up getting a set of these.

http://www.rotaaustralia.com.au/rota-gr ... 047297.htm

16x8 +10 offset
Gloss white (I might regret that later)
Hoping to put 205 45 16's on them.

Will have pics of the car on Sunday with them.

What colour nuts should I run on them? Any suggestions?

Can you buy black nuts? I've got no idea.

The car will be staying orange/black for now, When I get my house renos finished I'll look at respraying it.
It might go orange again, or maybe white to go with the wheels? Depends how it looks really?

I bought the same rims on ebay for $800 with free delivery. Also got some brand new 215/40/16 goodyear eagle F1 tyres for $500 delivered from ebay. These tyres retail for over $300 each. Sometimes ebay is ur friend. I also have thought about gloss or flat black for the rims but for now the white rims on white car look good. But in future my car will be painted like the factory rally cars so I may change to black rims then.

Got my rims, but waiting on tyres.
Pics here

Just for others benefit, 16x8 with +10 offset gives a 125mm backspacing from the hub face.

I've learned a lot about wheels since I started looking for wheels for this car. I'd like to thank those that helped me, especially astronturbo77.

Thanks peoples

Hey Dave, you will be taking the Rims in off the car.

Just tell them they are going on a Drift car and they dont have to met Road rules BLAH BLAH.
What they dont know, they cant be held responsible for.

But if you want to fill the gaurds why go skinny?

I do like the look of stretched tyres but ;)
