I would probably be more inclined to put a EFI 1.8 out of a CE Lancer in it (4G93). Does anyone know if the situation with the rear drive gearboxes that mate up to them?

go a 63 they are sort of the same engine but better, bigger in capacity and more performance parts available. A narrow jap 5sp will bolt up. but at the end of the day we know a astron is better, less work and cheaper....get in chat mate

And if you want to do things on the cheap you could get a sonata, 2L DOHC G4CP, 2.4L SOHC G4CS or the Lantra 1.8L DOHC . They are are pretty much the same as the Mitsubishi 4g63, 4G64 and the 4G61 engines. I picked up a sonata 2L with a busted timing belt for only 50 bucks just to do a DOHC swap to a starion bottom end. You should be able to pick up a full running sonata for a few hundred and just remove the engine and computer. Much cheaper than the comparable mitsubishi and pretty much everything is the same between the two.

Haha stealth you made me laugh.
I love the note of the 4G32 with the twin carbs, so I can put up with the lack of power. But If I lose the sound factor then I will need more go.
I'm happy with the performance of the 4G94 in my Lancer. It weighs 1250kg.
So I'm assuming the 4G93 would not be a bad conversion for a Galant (less weight and all)
I suppose if I was to go down this path, the best bet would be seeing an engineer.
Maybe my best bang for buck is to buy an old GH 2.6 auto, and just put the motor from that straight into a galant. It would be a reasonable improvement (on the 1.6) and wouldn't require much updating of the car to meet adr compliance.
Then later I could upgrade to Magna head and injection.

I still have to see how much in the way of $$$ I have left after i finish my house/garage. That will be the deciding factor.

Bit of an update for you...
Got the driveway poured on Tuesday.
Now I'm just waiting on my carport.
Will now be busy cutting up the Galant shell in my garage, All the rotor gear is sold and delivered to it's new home, so the body has to go (but I will be saving pieces for rust repair on my GD sedan project).
Once the shell is gone then work will commence on the GD sedan. I still have heaps to do around my house and new shed, but little things should be happening to it soon.
