racing bucket seats

Post by Scorpma82 »

Hi guys

I got a quote from an auto trimmer to re-upholster a set of front starion seats in blak velour and my rear seat in matching fabric.....after i nearly dropped dead after a $2000 quote......i've considered purchasing a brand new set of reclining racing buckets in the likes of SAAS, Recaro, Autotechnica etc.

My question is....is there any particular brand of seating that can be adapted to the sigma rails???
I've heard of people bolting them into cars like Falcons and Commodores...but never heard of a sigma....any help on this please???

I got about the same quote to re-do the hardtops seats. Try searching trade me, japanese yahoo and import monster. I got my GTO seats from Import Monster and saved nearly $1000 and ended up with some sweet seats.

Yeah, a wagon makes it tougher. A seat cover always works and get some sporty seats for the front.

i got a full retrim done on an escort about 10 years ago

front seats were $500pr
rear seat was $600 also had it re bolstered to match the recaro fronts
4 door trims and gear shift boot $300
carpet $160

I dont think theres any aftermarket seats that will "bolt in" unless you can find some pws rails, failing that you can make some adapter rails from 6x25mm flat bar and bolt them in

Also when choosing a seat, you will need one that has a fairly thin bottom swab otherwise your head will touch the roof

I have Recaros in my Wagon, and a Saas seat in my Hatch, both types of seats are fitted using the original rails. I haven't had to do anything like weld or add plates. I have simply redrilled holes in the original rails to suit the new seats.

Just measure the distance side to side between the seat runners. My Lancer Hatch, and Galant wagon are both 400mm apart. The same as the Recaro and Saas seats that I have (don't assume all seats are the same, make sure you measure).

Here are the Recaros in my wagon.

As "the other Dave" (75wagon) says, adapting most aftermarket seats to existing seat runners is generally easy as.

With side mount seats, just bolt the mounts to the stock rails ... the holes in the mounts are usually slotted so there is some room to play with width etc. The SAAS Mach II driver's seat in my GB is done this way.

For bottom mount seats, just bolt some cross pieces to the rails and bolt the seat to that, if the spacing doesn't match. (I used a couple of 50mm x 6mm alloy strips to mount the Velo seat on the passenger side in mine - the mounting holes in the seat are too close together to bolt straight to the rails)

Just FYI ... the mounting holes in the base of OBX "Daytona" seats are also exactly the same width apart as stock Galant seat rails. Just have to drill 1 hole in each rail to match the rear mounting points (I think .. maybe it was the front ?) and bolt them on. Took me all of 15-20mins to fit one. They are ADR-compliant seats too, so fully legal ..... and cheap.

Note : Reclining seats are not "racing seats" .... and if it's primarily a road car, you will find that competition-type buckets with high sides will become a PITA very quickly to get in & out of !!

Very true.
It does seem like a commonly accepted faux pas though.

That's true..i shoulda been more specific....im looking for more lateral support in a road going car.....purely for the reason that my ass is quite the 'wide load'

i'm looking for more the racing look...or at the least....a nicely shaped/padded seat

It will be a road, but not a daily....at least thats the plan

If it's not split or warped you can have a go at pulling it out and hitting it with vinyl spray. Stitching a dash cover is not for the the faint hearted. Look up auto upholstery courses in your area at T.A.F.E. and sign up. They're expensive (about $800ish) but you'll learn how to make door trims from scratch, replace kick panels, rebolster seats and repair broken seat frames. Plus you'll be able to use your own car as project material in class. But if you're like me, you'll only want to do it once... :|

i have thought about going down that path geezer....in particular with pain/panel work and the upholsetry

Although i'd like to have HUUUUUGE power, my goal really is to do a 'budget build up' and to do literally as much of the work myself(obviously, some things i wont be able to do myself), purely for the reason of...if someone looks at the car and asks "who did that for you: i can stand there proudly and say "i did it myself"

I have thought using vinyl paint on the dash......i like to be difficult tho lol
