Legality of changing seats

Post by camB »

Hi all,

I know 75wagon has posted a "how to" for fitting Recaros to his Galant but I have another question.
Is any seat pretty much ok so long as you use the factory seat and seatbelt anchor points?

Thanks,
Cam

Pretty sure the rule is, you can't modify the seat rails without an engineers cert. So I take that as no adding metal and welding, but drilling a hole to take a new bolt (in a suitable ,location that doesn't remove strength) should be fine.

I'm just about to do that mod again, with these going into my new project wagon.

Here's the pics of the ones in my GC wagon. Factory rails, only modification is 2 more holes in the front of each rail (Recaros take 6 bolts not 4 like the stock seat)

For VIC it simply says...
Replacing seats
An Approval Certificate is not required for a replacement seat provided:
  • the seat is offered by the manufacturer as an option and is replacing and existing seat
the original seat mountings are used
    appropriate seat belts are fitted.
An Approval Certificate is required if:
  • the replacement seat was not offered by the manufacturer as an option
the vehicle was manufactured on or after 1 January 1969.
