GD galant, hot house green. Aka 'The green machine'
GD galant, hot house green. Aka 'The green machine'
Hi all, I figured it's about time I put a post for my latest car. It's a GD XL galant, painted in hot house green. I picked it up off a mate, who had originally planned to build it into a drag car. Still getting the rest of the parts I need together but progress is going very well I have brought a few bits and pieces from other members on here, so some of the bits may look familiar to some people lol.
I hope to have it on the road by november.
Here's a few pics, I hope you will all like them as much as I do

Re: GD galant, hot house green. Aka 'The green machine'
The paint work looks good. This is actually a colour I considered for my wagon when I sprayed it, but decided I wanted something darker.
Got to say though, I'm not a fan of kidney mags (jelly beans or whatever you want to call them).
Got any before and during pics?

Nah no other pics. This is how it was when I brought it, except from the dash and the rims. Some people dont like the jelly beans much, but I've always wanted some for an old school car. I think they will look good on it when it's done, but we'll see I suppose

A bit more progress today. Made new trims for 'B' pillars, got badges on, new parcel shelf and painted half of rear seat with vinyl paint. Next task is to pop out front window so I can trim the 'A' pillars, get a window mechanism for rear drivers side door so glass can go in. Pick up carpet tomorrow
Here are some pics from today

Re: GD galant, hot house green. Aka 'The green machine'
Another update with pics. Progress is going well. Interior is not far from complete.
'C' pillar covers before
'C' pillar covers re-made
Decided to re-trim my crash pad. Need to tighten up the finger dents tho lol
This one is just to see what dash would look like with ally backing to the gauges. I don't mind the look but I would need to make a new cover panel (without dents and scratches) for it to look good. Maybe an option in the future if I get bored with the look in the next pic.
This is after re- trimming in black vinyl.
Windows are ready to go back in, so that's next on the list. Then just need to fit the carpet, buy or make some door trims and buy some seats for the front
More pics soon! Let me know what you think!
Cheers,
Dave

Re: GD galant, hot house green. Aka 'The green machine'
looks great mate, gotta say, i prefer the vinyl dash with the alloy backing more than the carpet. and the dash setup to. im going for the custom gauges to, just had to idea what to use as warning lights and indicator lights, i'm thinging the little ones you have will be good enough. the green is different to, my brother has a torana in the same colour. and how long does the vinyl paint last? how expensive is it? im may do the same for a while.
cheers,
Mick

Re: GD galant, hot house green. Aka 'The green machine'
The vinyl paint is about $10-$20 depending on where u get it from. Not sure how long it lasts, I've had mixed feedback on it. Some people say its crap and will come off, especially on seats, but if you prep the surface properly, it shouldn't come off. Just make sure you clean it with warm soapy water and a light scotch bright pad, then a good clean with prepsol and go nuts. That's all I did

ah yea, thanks for that mate. what brand are the gauges? and aprox how much did it cost for em? are they water temp, press, and oil temp, press, tach and speedo? cheers

Re: GD galant, hot house green. Aka 'The green machine'
I brought the whole dash set-up from someone on here for about $250. The gauges are speco and there is an oil pressure, volts, water temp, tacho, odometer and fuel. They vary in price from about $40 for the small ones and $100+ for the bigger ones. Only thing is they are all electric, so im still looking into how to set up the speedo. I need to get an electronic sensor pick up it something.

Re: GD galant, hot house green. Aka 'The green machine'
hmm, good point on the speedo, i shall make sure i get a manual one. not electric. i've gotta try and make a costom set for a gb dash, but i want a 5" tach and speedo in it all.
N/A ALL THE WAY
Re: GD galant, hot house green. Aka 'The green machine'
Take a speedo cable for the GD and see if screws into the speedo gear housing on a couple of fwd Mitsu gearboxes at a wrecker. You might find one that will couple up to it (that will mean the sender will screw onto your gearbox) but you are probably going to really play with the sender drive insert to get it to engage the speedo drive. Then there's calibrating it to show the correct road speed...
Re: GD galant, hot house green. Aka 'The green machine'
Magna electronic speedo sensors from the TN/P's screw straight onto the Jap gearboxes.
Calibration for the Gauge (on my VDO on) is holding the button to go into the setting mode and drive 1km then hit the button and it records how many times it pulses and should read correct. then you can go back into the settings and adjust up or down to get it more accurate.
If you run into trouble maybe try Gauge Works on Port Road, they should be able to help you out if having trouble calibrating or wiring up anything if you dont have the books for the gauges.

Ok cheers. I'm still a while away from that bit yet but will look into it some more. Do the tn/tp sensors connect to a 4 speed too? Or just a jap 5? I've got a 4 is all.

Re: GD galant, hot house green. Aka 'The green machine'
Time for a quick update I guess.... It's been a while and progress has been a lot slower then I'd hoped .
Windows are all in, rubbers are all done, carpet is half fitted.
Bad point, is the vinyl trim on the dash came un-stuck. I guess the glue just wasn't good enough, so I'll have to re-trim it...... Again lol. Also have a full vinyl door card coming hopefully this week to complete my set
. Pics again soon

Ok, so this week I've started tidying up my door cards and sprayed them black in vinyl paint. Also got some proper auto trim glue, so I can re do the dash.

These pics show how the glue hads let go on the dash. Also shows steering wheel options

Re: GD galant, hot house green. Aka 'The green machine'
Well it's been a while but time for an update
I've re- trimmed the dash and crash pad again. Pics tomorrow
Also got a pair of seats out of a Gemini, because I don't have a drivers seat but these look pretty good, just have to do a few mods to make them fit.
Also made a blank plate for where the fuel pump goes (upgrading to an electric fuel pump)
The ball is rolling again! should be raft for the adelaide chrysler show in March
Cheers,
Dave

Re: GD galant, hot house green. Aka 'The green machine'
When you have another go at doing your dash pad try this - first up, don't use upholstery foam. As you've seen the stuff dents when you touch it as soon as you've applied adhesive. If the dash is all split (no doubt it is...) and you've cut out the damage, use expanding foam to fill the gaps and shape it back to follow the rest of the contours and glue the vinyl straight onto it (it will look more factory original). Try something like 'fast grip' to glue down the vinyl or if that proves to be a pain - PVA glue. Easy to use, easy to clean, doesn't stink, dries clear If you have complex shapes where the vinyl needs to stay into deep corners like the instrument panel you'll need to make a 'plug' and clamp it into position (taking a heat gun to it gently and stretching the vinyl before glueing it down will help with shaping it).79_lancer wrote: Bad point, is the vinyl trim on the dash came un-stuck. Re: GD galant, hot house green. Aka 'The green machine'
Yep that's pretty much what I've done this time. My dash was pretty good but was starting to deteriorate. There was only one crack in the corner though. I ditched the foam all together and brought some proper motor trimming adhesive from a trimming supplier. It's pretty much quick grip. It's held for the last few months now, and survived 5 days in a row above 40degrees. ( I glued it before it went into sleep mode )
Here's how it looks as we speek..... Pics are a bit average due to sun glare but it's looking pretty good

Re: GD galant, hot house green. Aka 'The green machine'
Ah ok, lol. They were all polished when I got them. They need to be done again now though.
Just takes a bit of elbow grease and time depends on what your starting piece is like. I'll put some progress pics up when I start doing my valve cover ( going to make that all shiny too ) if it's a pretty rough surface, it needs to be sanded back till smooth. I'll use down to 1500 grade wet and dry, and wet rub it till it's smooth. Then hit it with autosol polish.
