GC coupe track build

Post by 75gus »

For all of you purists out there you won't be happy with me but meh.........

So i did have a GC sedan as a track car....... until the floods of 2011 fixed that for me :banh: The rust came out of nowhere and it just wasn't worth fixing. it ended up going to the crusher after no one on here wanted it and i got all the good bits out (doors and boot are still available though ;-) )

The motor, diff and gearbox all need a rebuild but are in pretty good nick considering. The engine only needs re ringing and a clean up, but while it out i may as well do a bit more to it. It is a saturn bored to 1850cc, reasonable head work, all balanced and the usual stuff and running twin weber 45's. It was making 120hp at the wheels and making power to nearly 8200rpm. Ive got the first dyno sheet from the run in tune up somewhere ill have to dig it out(its only 107hp though.)
I want to run the saturn again so if there are any other ideas out there on how to lean on this little thing a bit harder I'm all ears :D

The coupe also went under but has had no extra rust come out since the floods so the decision was made to start over again.
Ready to go to Bozo86 engineering. sorry shit pic.

I don't have the budget to run in a series but we are loosely basing it around improved production rules. Anything that falls outside the class rules will be able to be change over anyway if required.

So here is where it sits now after a couple of days in the shop. more photos to come as it happens. Hope you enjoy (H)

The first half of it should happen pretty quickly, I'm sure the fit up will take forever though..
I think they are going to be too small and one went missing in the flood, they are 8's but i will be able to fit 10's with no problems. I'm waiting for updates on otomoto every week but not much coming up.

I have 15x8's on the back of mine and there is plenty of room for 10's. 8's will fit on the front too with coil overs, I have had my 8's on the front but the offset put them outside the guards but there was plenty of room inside.
I am constanly on otomoto looking too, I want some SSR meshies, 15x7+5 for the front and 15x9+0 for the back, I ain't holding my breath lol

It's going to be a real mission to find 13's in 10's i may have to go 15's but i don't want to. No dramas with the fitting in the guards, just cut and roll some more :P
I've got a set of flares but i don't like the look of them on the rear the fit just isn't right so it will all be done in steel.

Those ones will end up on the front for now until budget permits a set of custom rims. probably these http://www.panasport.com/racing.html
I'd rather meshies but haven't really looked around for custom ones yet.

Cheers mate, I still have the front guards to replace but am happy with it over all.
That sounds like a pretty mean Saturn your running. You will have to get a vid once it is running again

Looking a bit sad now but it sounded hot with only 1 hot dog and a side pipe. You will have to wait a while for a vid, 3 kids under 5 and a wife at uni leave very little for car budget

Few updates.

Coilovers nearly done. I think it's 70mm cut out of the tube to suit the konis. Ill get specs if anyone is interested.
Sorry again for the crap pics..

Bit of camber now, and extra track width.

Does anyone know what the maroon or red struts would have come out of?

I thought they were greens but didn't see them before the paint was stripped and by the looks of the photos today they were red before.
Doesn't really matter now whatever they are out of, they work.

Looking good, love the camber  That is going to scrap it's belly when wound right down, lol

As far as I can tell all Mitsu struts were black except for the GH greens. I would think red or maroon were aftermarket?

Should be able to wind 7 degrees into it when the sigma lower arms go on. Not that ill need that much with the yokies.
I thought that too, i was thinking they are probably old Pedders rebuilds.

It will be around the legal limit of 100mm excluding exhaust.. It's going to be interesting to clean after i put it in the gravel traps lol.

have u considere giving the car a flat bottom then???
few benefits (especially if you make it a quick/fit release item)

easier to clean
if the car leaks fluid...it doesnt leak it on the track or on ur tyres
more aerodynamic and also can fit a rear diffuser under the car for extra downforce again.....dunno if uve considered it or the rules dont allow it

Yeah have given it a bit of thought, all lines will be inside the car anyway so that's not a problem. It will probably end up with a sheet undertray, it think a diffuser is going a bit far for this build and power levels but anything is possible when budget permits. As above i don't have the budget to run i a series so rules aren't a problem at the moment, just itchy to get it on track. Ive had to run a dirty wrong wheel drive excel for the last year on dirt to satisfy the itchyness...

Bit of progress this week.
The engine has been sent off to be rebuilt after the flood damage. The builder doesn't think there will be much more than a hone and good clean. Don't really want to blow much more coin on the g32 as i need an excuse to fit a healthy g92 (H)

Cage is starting to take shape. Yes the door bars will have gussets.

More cage updates, its nearly done
only the gussets on the door bars and bracing it into the A pillars. The front guard stretching started today, no pics as yet :@
Anyone smarter than me, know why my pics get deleted in the other posts?????

Thanks Jason,
I was only expecting some flat sheet in there, so I was very impressed to see what my mate had done.
The motor is ready to be picked up on Monday. Its all happening a lot quicker than I thought it would. I'm going to have a crack at pulling the jap 5 speed apart and seeing if I can fix whatever damage the flood has done to the internals. If anyone has any good tips on doing the box that would be great, I've never done a box build before.
Hopefully the Scorp diff will be in next week, if my slack brother goes to pick it up......then bring it back to Qld at the end of the month.

Those parts you asked about on the other coupe are pretty average, I haven't had time lately to strip it but when I do I'll post some pics.

nice progress.

Is there only half a horizontal harness bar welded in to the back of the car?
Not ever going to carry a passenger?

Yeah only the one bar, i thought he would have put 2 in but meh, too much weight adding a passenger anyway lol. its not too hard adding one in later on anyway if i find spare thousands laying around to do tarmac rally stuff......
It will more than likley have the battery sitting where the seat should be.

He doesn't have another one around does he, lol. Mine will be hidden by the rear seat so I will make a plain that one will do, but that is awesome.

looks bloody nice mate, makes nearly wants me to put a steering box brace and strut tops braces on my coupe. Are you still using the stock galant x member or changing to a LA lancer one for better castor adjustment? stock lca's?

Damian,
I think the same, but for the amount I'm paying I just let him do as he wants.. I love mates rates lol.

Algie,
Still the gc xmember and lca's. Lca's are swapped l to r and the strut tops are welded further to the rear for more castor, it looks like there will be enough for now. the camber is fine, it has more than enough adjustment.
We were going to do the lancer swap but if I do that I want to change to rack and pinion at the same time. At this point in time I just want to get it finished and have some fun and the longer my mate is working on it the less he can earn.
The old sedan sat around for years and did nothing due to constantly changing shit, I don't want to do that all over again.
Did you end up doing the xmember swap on your coupe?
