Ive started work on the Galant to give it some TLC and some upgrades.

The plans are:
Upgrade to 1600 motor , with a weber and a cam etc
5 Speed Conversion

Freshen up the Interior/Exterior


Its very much a working progression but well see how it goes.


To date:



Found some rust in the fenders, and found rare spares still do rust panels for the GA's

LH fender isnt pretty

Alot of bog in there, so this one might be just gettin fixed up with bog for now and left to a later date




Bought some new carpet (sorry, not a great photo), looks the goods.



I fitted the weber on today to hear how it sounds (awesome). Im in the process of sorting out distributor issues with it. Ill either be upgrading to petronix electronic or modding the carby for vac advance.


Ive also dropped my bumper in to get re-chromed, expensive but hopefully it will be worth it.

Next step will be sorting out the 5 speed, bit more complicated in the GA's then i first thought.

New carpet is 50% in and finished hooking the weber up. Had probs with threaded holes for the linkage which was a pain in the ass but all good now.

Can't wait to be drivin it again!

The Ga is looking great Phil. Did you get the whole car repainted? It looks like it was worth getting the bumper re-chromed

It should pass ok but I just wanna be sure

Pink slips are easy mate,
She looks neat,
Brakes have been upgraded so they work.
Decent tyres,
No major oil leaks,
no tears in the seat belts,
no exhaust leak,
all lights work and she should pass

Got rego last week so shes back on the road!



I fixed up the accelerator linkage a bit better.





New carpet is in.

Looking at getting the 5 speed in this year and ive also started looking at getting an air con setup for it. (mostly due to the freakingly hot days recently)

I have gone out of my way to find rare bolt ons to accessorise my car.

You would definitely know Dave, I basically want to follow the path of your wagon.

I would love to go for power through a 4g63 or similar but I do like keeping the original theme, plus I couldn't commit to that kind of cash with it just yet.

I love the saturns I think there a great little motor for what they are, mine hasn't skipped a beat yet

yea i think there a great little engine wether 1600 or even the 1300s go great and are so reliable when treated right!

Out of interest, are you still running the stock rear wheel cylinders (13/16") or did you change them to the disc/drum ones (3/4") ?

I gather you went to the disc/drum 11/16" master cylinder, by the look of the photos.

Ill take those rims off your hands soon Dave, yeah rego was all good except i had to fix the key to stop it sliding out of the ignition

Weber is going well, ive set the linkage up better so there is minimal free play, it needs to be jetted down and properly tuned though.

Im going to go to that guy at broad meadow this week.

Yeah it was a drum brake front end (terrible to try and stop in a straight line), converted it to a GC disc front end. Got the disc/drum master cylinder new from USA off ebay.

Kept the rear drums as is, i think i worked out there was minimal difference and i havent had any troubles since.

I'm looking to put the larger (drum/drum type) rear WCs on my car, to hopefully get a little extra rear brake bias .... hopefully it will work, but doesn't sound like it has caused any drama in your car with excessive rear braking.

As it turns out, the 13/16" wheel cylinders are NLA according to Repco (even though PBR still list them in their online cattledog) ...... looks like I'll be sticking with the standard bore ones !

Try hunting around eBay US I think I saw some on there

Yeah maybe, but the ones I have in my garage look sexy on it... They are also the wheels that Phil always wanted on the car (or so he tells me).

The braking balance on Phils GA is perfect, no probs at all (I think my hatch with the GH struts/discs has to much front bias).
Davetrees, have you thought about changing to either Galant wagon or Lancer hatch rear drums? That should give you a little more rear brake bias?
Does anyone know if a Sigma rear drum set up bolts up to a Galant housing? I think they are a between size between Galant sedan and wagon sizing.

i have a wagon diff under my LA with gd struts and it has too much rear brake bias, locks up the rears easily

Some news, had the car tuned. Massive problems with the carb, but all fixed now and running well. Uses alot more fuel now, more then I expected, but a 4 speed revving at 4-5grand on the highway to work doesn't help lol.

I have another dilemma. This Is sittin out the front of my house:


I have nowhere to put it at this house. I'll feel bad but I'm thinking of just wrecking it for parts. It's in reasonable condition, would need a bit of work but would be a good project. But with the lack of ga/gb's around (especially nsw) I may never get my hands on spare parts for mine if I get rid of it.

What do you guys think?
