Colt projects

Post by MATNES »

well i have 3 cars on the go ATM. 2 of them are 1970 Colt 11-SS's and one to keep the wife happy her S2 RX-7

the first Colt i will go through is the Rally car
it has been built to run as a Historic so it only has slight mods done to it
bigger cam, electric fuel pump and a bigger exhaust, the rest is as it came from the factory in Japan. it has an 1100cc engine putting out around 75hp and it is a real SS, none of this modern SS stuff, it has better gearbox ratio's, twin carbs, and a different cam grind to an 1100f. and a factory tacho
it was a bit un loved when i picked it up but after much stuffing around all i need is some shockies and it is up for rego.
Pics from when i got it

then some cage mods

then some rust repairs and new factory paint job

the other colt known as Mozzi the Mitsu to my kids
this one only needs a drivers side seat and a grill to make it complete........ a few spare days and lots of cash will see it finished in a few years. i have decided to strip it right back and paint it with some POR15 to try and stop it from looking like this.
Image
i have had i few idea's on engines but the all require mods the the chassis so they have been ruled out( i have only found 6 other 11-SS's that are worth saving) the first option was a 12A rotory but it sits to high to fit a box behind it, but it does use the same engine mounts. and the 4G32 and 5spd but i need to pump the tunnel to fit the box.
and here is my other Colt
Image
and pic's of what i have done so far can be found here
http://s201.photobucket.com/albums/aa22 ... 20project/

and the wife RX-7 hill climb project,
stock 12A with lightened fly wheel and hvy duty clutch and a hilux LSD so far, next is a bigger exhaust and a webber

sorry for the long post and i hope the pic's are not to big.
even more sorry that i own a spazda

i hope to be out in the forest later this year( if the wife and kids lets me) if not a few motorkhana's and hill climbs will have to do, or some officiating work as sweep or something

the only parts i can get for it from the spares shops are filters(oil/fuel) spark plugs, points and dizzy cap( but it isn't the same as a factory one) the rest i have to spend months tracking down suitable parts to fit, it has taken a few months to find shockies the right size and the right stiffness, LC lancer rears fit the front but the top mount point needs spacers made up.
the other big problem is the brake master cylinder has stuffed out from sitting for to long and has started to leak rusty looking crap into the cabin, thats right no brake boosters in these, but it does come standard with disc's on the front
Image

i also found a little vid of it being moved around into the back yard

and a rare bit of footage from the 1970 southern cross rally.

thats what gives me the shits.....it was re sleeved 2 years ago. the clutch is fine, it was done at the same time.
i have aprox 2 and a half colts + a heap of brake and clutch parts( they just need to be reco'd).

there are lots of parts that are interchangeable between the early models and there are still a few good parts cars out there.

Oh, and i need to win lotto so no one buy any tickets this week

man i feel like i just stepped into a rally museum or time machine. Amazing lil colts you got there. The rx7 hillclimb car i take it gets a back seat in most conversations to the much more loved colts?

have a look at the first and 2nd pages on the main bit and through my race cars section for pic's of the progress. still more to upload. also check out the albums that end in 07,08 or 09 might be some rally lancers etc. from local Canberra events.

grinder was good for some but most just snapped out with little effort, so glad the cage is gone as if it did reach 100% weight transfer the cage would have done nothing to protect me ( see pic's on page 1)

doing some re trimming to the front seats and adding carpet and stuff when i get a chance

lots of stuff on there.......you should see the file i have on my puter, utes, wagons. 1000's of pic' and bits of info
the LC is Kodos's new toy, Kodos if you read this did you want some pic's and stuff of it/for it, i have a file on Larry still to.

as for Ned the X rally car nothing to flash for now, i have had it for a few years and still haven't driven it more than round the front yard a few times.
if you look in the "SS project" that is the other one i hope to do a full resto on. this shell is a bit battered after being rallied on some of the under side but the blue one is just a little rusty in spots and i gives me time to source bits i have not found yet.

i also just got a brand new in the box top end kit for them( but it was made years ago), all the gaskets and seals to reco a head and a head gasket. cost me a fortune but i think it was worth it.........$35 NZ including post  not bad when i head gasket costs around $70aud by it's self( yes there are 5 or so left on the shelf)
