my gb

Post by 75glnt »

hey i just bought a gb galant and was wondering what you all thought?
i cannot post images at the moment as my camera is broken but when i get a new onw i will add them.

it is a 1973 gb galant with a 1600 saturn. this is the list of things that has been done to the motor and car.
bored out 40 thou
blueprinted and balanced
webber downdraught carbby and manifold
heat wrapped tuned and lengthed extractors
2.5 in straight throught cat back to a 5" muffler to a 4.5" chrome dump tip
dont knw what size but a huge billet cam
hardened seats and valves
larger ports
5 sp jap box with racing exedy clutch and pressure plate
lowered 2"
upped comp ratio
larger altenator and leads
fully rebuilt down to the nuts that are on the block

thats as far as i knw... i was tld there are plenty more things but yet to find what else.

i was told that it does 13.8 over the 1/4
and also that it runs off the speedo in 3rd :D
not bad for $500 :D

at the moment the car is in pieces for a paint job so dont look to good but everything is immaculate, no tears at all in seats or door cards

cheers,
mick.

Wow, sounds good. Awesome price, certainly can't complain with it.

But 13.8 from a 1600? Does he have a time sheet with that?

Other then that all sounds good, and pics.... get a new camera or borrow one, your teasing us :hit:

Definately sounds brillant but a 13.8 out of a 1600 Hmmm not sure on that one, not sure about the running off spedo in 3rd either would have to be revving it head off and even then the maths dont add up... but $500 starting price you got to be happy with that. That would not cover the engine rebuild so should be very happy with the rest then, sounds like a great project... :D

Cheers

PS: I miss my first GB

How do you mean exactly?

My wagon had almost no rust. One patch, I have kept the piece I cut out as proof.
My sedan I have is, well, quite rusty, but all lower panels, they are easier to fix. Easier then around the roof sections where they rust around the gutters.

If this is what you mean. Welding straight panels always holds the fear of warpage (I think that is how it's spelt). Don't get the panel too hot. this is what warps them. Weld small amounts at a time.

Congrates on the buy mate. We will be needing pics, lol
I am not sure on the sellers numbers, however if they are correct then technically a 950kg car with 120rwkw would run a 13.7.
I would think 120rwHP is more likely and then it would run about 15sec 1/4, which I think is more realistic.
Hope the sellers numbers are correct but either way mate, if you are happy with it, that's all that matters

Re: my gb

Post by 75glnt »

ok.... here, is a very, VERY! long awaited update...

WARNING: a lot of reading and pics ahead. not for the feint hearted :P

now! before we go on... this post makes me look slack :P but.. ive left alot of nitty gritty dirty pain in the arse little jobs like sort out a bucket full of nuts and bolts... that were unmarked.. and all, were from the car.. there were almost no bolts on the car at all! just what was holding the doors and guards on.. the rest... went in the bucket!! :banh:

so... so much for a build thread eh!? :) haha... seeing as I didn't keep up to date etc... ill start from where we left off :)

I bought this when I was 18... so.. 3-4 years ago, with the plans of taking the running gear and throwing it my old gc.. well, things got complicated.. long story short. I sold the beloved gc to keep the gb.

WELL! when i got the car home from nsw.. i had a car, an engine/box, and... a boot full of parts!! some in boxes some not... but i also had... the bucket!! :P
it took me a good year and a half to 2 years to sort out every nut and bolt... yep! the bucket was finaly empty! so once that was sorted..in went the engine! well.. in bolted in.. but all the damn wires were painted black!! (not by me :P previous owner went the whole paint tin, stove top and paint brush job.. so it was a few mm thick in there!

i got over that hurdle and run into another.. electrical!

after a few weeks of banging my head and pulling my hair out, i found the problem! well... i fixed it anyway.. there was a wire somewhere that wasnt conected under the dash (i still havent found it to this day :P), so i ran a new one.. from the ignition to the starter.. so when i hit "start" it powers the starter.. and it turned over! (i shit myself! jumped about a foot in the air.. i had the wire from the + on the battery.. to the starter... and my head down beside the strut tower.. )
so i got the engine started for the first time i had it.. longest 2 years of my life :P so i wired it as a mentioned above, and she starts via the key. like a new one ;-)

drove her around for a few weeks (in its stripped state with 1 seat, and a few octopus straps, no bonnet or glass, and some sunnies (H) ) i loved it!!

(its quick.. but, i dont think its as quick as i was led to beleive.. but.. im hoping she'll break 15s.. i think its quick enough to do so :) )

i looked around and finally! i found some hubcaps! 2 here, and 2 there.. and looked and looked.. and found myself some trim rings! (thanks mitch  )

from there i put her together and only needed carpet, a front screen, and the rear fitted for a roady :) then changed my mind... this is where i pulled it all apart again and put the parts in storage (completely labeled in plastic zip lock bags for every nut and bolt (A) )

i decided to go from yellow.. to white.. and drive it everyday.. but i forgot how much fuel it used so.. change of plans.. again! :P

its going to be my weekender/fun car.. motorkhanas, flat course stuff. drifting, drags and circuit... so its staying yellow :P

so this is where we are now.. minus a few parts as i helped a mate get his on the road.. :)

so heres an updated list of everything from the start..

as in the 1st post, I have posted the mods to the engine.. but they weren't definite. so.. here's an updated list;

40thou over
10thou off the head
15thou off the block
blueprinted and balanced crank, rods and cam
billet 30/70 waggot cam
ported and polished head
larger valves
32/36 webber downdraught carb jetted to suit the cam
tuned lengthed 4-2-1 extractors that have been heat wrapped
2" exhaust with lukey muffler on the rear
flat top pistons
9.5:1 comp ratio
jap 5 speed
exedy clutch
lowered god knows how much! (its low! lca's are 70mm from the ground, diff centre is between 50-70mm... and the exhaust is about 40mm..)
larger alternator
rebuilt when I bought it back when.. (right down to every nut, bolt, welsh plug and screw)
xr3000 electronic ignition

im sure there's more, im just trying to sum up an entire build in one go.. lol :P

BODY
the body was rather rough in person (last I spoke of it, it wasn't home yet and only seen pics)

it had some rust in the lower regions of the body (rear 1/4s, front 1/4s, and front doors), also some along the lip of the boot where the rubber sits.
fortunately for me it was straight. with only a very small dent on the bonnet(10c piece).

the paint had some pitting all through it, like orange peel.. and also some paint missing where they taped the bonnet and doors shut when towing :banh:

(dont worry.. pics are coming ;-) )

WHAT I'VE DONE

ive fixed all the rust in it (just bog  didn't have a welder, metal, skills, space or anything... like tools :banh: )
tidied up the engine bay, in black.
got the engine in and running.
put it together minus the front and rear glass, and carpet. then pulled it part again! :ban:

when i installed the electronic ignition.. i didnt buy a coil to suit... and fried a brand new bosch gt40r :banh: so now she wont start...

i pulled the ignition out and returned to points, set the engine to tdc, and tried again... flat battery! :banh: that was recent... but now i cant do anything until i get a part(gearbox mount), as i cant turn the engine over...

but... i have the bug again! and soon enough.. she will breathe again! 8o|

now... ive lost myself! so.. i shall give you some porn.. sorry, pics :P

this, is how i got her.. straight off the trailer :)

ok...... god dang facebook wont let me get into "properties" to get the url!!! :banh: :banh: :banh: so pics later :) and a story with each set of pics :blah:

thanks for reading and i hope you enjoy the progress... when you get to see it! :P

 yep! :P

And it should be easy now I've labeled everything and all that... 2.5 year to put together.. An hour to pull apart :P should only take an hour or 2 now :) then it's almost done.. Again :P

And yea I'll link it up now..

But there's a few pics and no real order.. I know the order.. But Facebook doesn't :P

That's some pretty serious rust by the looks of it.

How'd it go with the bog? It looks like there would hardly be enough meat to hold it in some spots?

I'm slowly learning (the hard way) do things once properly - it's alot easier. Similar to the old saying - the poor man pays twice lol.

Yea it wasn't too hard... I just used some card board to back it.. Placed the bog on.. Shaped, painted etc. then removed the cardboard.. Only a couple mm of bog.. And the largest hole was about 10cm x 3cm.. With a few little bits off steel left in it.. Turned out well for a first time thing :)

(On a serious note); if you can do rust (sheet metal, weld, etc). I'll be happy to pay you.. But I have no tools for that kind of work... No welder or anything :)

nah haha unfortunately i don't have the skills yet... YET

one day i will be happy to do it for you.

i have got my welds down pretty solid now after a long retarted learning process.

at the moment i am sticking to welding peoples exhausts seeing as its harder imo.

once i can fix the rust in my car i will let you know.

Big update! Kinda :P

Just had Jon (VGJONO) around to sus out my faulty gearbox mount he bought me (long story.. He needed mine for his and bought a new one for me). Well... It wasn't fitting so he came around to see why.. Well.... I'm a dicxhead

I was trying to put it in backwards.. And upside down :P so it would face the ground. Which made the x member too shallow. So... We/he got that sussed out :) tinkering can begin! After the daily :\ lol

Ok... So I have this thing I do every year (new years resolution). And I've been thinking long and hard about what to do in 2014. So I've finally come to this... The old galant :)

So this is a pre-plan so to speak.

I am in need of some ideas of how to go with this as I plan to keep it as long as I can, I want to do it right the first time :)
What I'm looking for is;
Keep the 1.6 I've got
Keep the jap 5 speed
Have it handle well and hold the power (diff, brakes and suspension)
Have a tough stance
And no jdm tuning on this one (that's what the ute is for)
I will run either quad carbs, or an experiment that I shall keep up my sleeve (shush Jon :P)
The rest.. I will need inspiration (paint, wheels, interior)

So feel free to post a chop you've done, or anything you may feel would be cool. Because I have no idea which way to go! :)

Hmmmmm, for some reason, all i can picture is a very deep (but bright) orange metallic duco (much like the late model Ford Focus XR5 Turbo), with polished 15" alloys, low profile tyres

Interior, black velour with colour coded piping (maybe adapt some rear head rests)
Custom black door cards with either colour coded or chrome pinstriping
Leather 3 spoke wheel
LED interior lighting (if you can, even inside the instrument cluster)

It may sound rather tame mods (especially from me) but if this is going to be ur daily driver, then practicality, comfort and ergonomics WILL become a high priority

 I'm trying to sell that colour! It's electric orange (6FSE). I have it all in 2k. And I was going to go exactly as you just said... But I don't really like it anymore :/ I'd need to see a photoshop.. Possibly with polished pps or another nice 15" alloy.. Hint hint ;-)

Great minds think alike they say :P

Also... Found a setup I like... Need to see it first

White
17x7.5 +20 Rota RB/RB-X with hyper black centre
Black/grey interior with matched/highlighted extras... Lighter grey, silver or chrome (not sure of the material yet? Cloth or vinyl?)
I like the lancer steering wheels... But the latest saas one with the silver centre is nice... 3 spokes with holes in them

That might go well?? Or yellow instead of white.. With yellow highlights inside??
