I started posting this up on the old forum have been meaning to transfer it across. I came across a 1978 Lancer with a blown head that was going cheap, and it happens to work out that my Grandfather was the original owner many owners ago.

Plans are to do it up for a Improved production racing, running a VR4 engine. Here are the build pictures there are a lot of them I will try to add more details as I go.

This me playing around with different front splitters and wheels.


I modified the seat rails so I could bolt in a fixed bucket seat and get the seat really low.














I made up this jig to help fabricate the mounts, it is built up around the stock mount, I was then able to cut the rubber out of the stock mount reinstall the top and bottom metal plates from the mounts back into the jig and still retain the correct dimentional relationship between the two plates. It was just then a matter of building up the guts of the mount using nolathane leaf spring mounts a steel tube and a few pieces of metal.

And installed into the car, they dropped in perfect and there is no play in the engine movement. It will shake the car a lot but hopefully eliminate the really bad vibrations I would have had with solid mounts.


Engine all cleaned up and new timing gear installed. I have modded a NA inlet manifold the to suit rwd and an xf throttle body. I have also finished off all of the water plumbing to make the engine work in the RWD orientation.


I am running a supra W58 gearbox mounted to the engine via dellow bellhousing. Here is the trans cross member I made to suit, it is lighter then the stock unit I might make one out of alloy one day to get the weight down more.


Interior nearly there just needs gauges.

Cheers I am very proud of it, it is taking me a lot longer (and costing more) then planned but it is has really been worth all of the effort.

Here is the latest updates and is how the car stands today, it feels good to be nearly completed.

I had a Kelway turbo manifold made up to highmount a garret turbo, I am very happy with the fit and finish of the manifold I highly recommend Chris. The turbo looked pretty small in the box, only Gt30 comp housing, but it really filled the engine bay out nicely, it's starting to look complete.





The pretty purple fuel rail is starting to grow on me, it was meant to bolt straight up but will need some different spacers and bolts to work.


I also bought a computer and I'm in the process of wiring it up.


I also bought a pair of RX7 series6 calipers and had some 8mm spacers made up so they can take a 30mm rotor, they included new pad guide pins to suit but were too short I am still waiting on replacements. At this stage I am thinking of using VE V6 front rotors, they are 298x30mm and can be had pretty cheaply.

Yeah that one had to go to make way for the race car, plus it was costing me too much to take out on the track. It was a fun car to drive but got a bit boring with the awd there to help you out, this lancer should be a more rewarding car to drive quick around a track.

who did the front airdam for it. been trying to find onr for my galant

I wish I could use fab'd engine mounts and crossmembers like yours on my galant road car. I'm in the very early stages of a 4G63 N/A conv and mounts like that would make it fit so much better but it'd create so much grief (and cost) trying to get it engineered (in NSW anyway)

why would it cause greif getting it engineered?
we fabricated our own engine mounts for my conversion and it passed easily.
just get an engineer onboard first and tell them what your doing,
they will then let you know what you can and cant do etc.

TJ - the mounts should be easy to get engineered they are a lot stronger in desing the stock rubber mount and the bolt is in double shear. The only thing the engineer might request is that they get welded up by a qualifed welder.

Wheelnut - I borrowed that front splitter off a friend I am still yet to find the right one for my car.

Sir, I had messaged you ages ago about these lovely engine mounts you've made.. Unfortunately I cannot message you any longer or see if you've messaged me back, as this forum seems to not allow me to check my own PMs, or PM any of the moderators to correct this.

Regardless, I would love to know if you'd be (interested in) making a batch of these...

I could make more but at $100 a set I am pretty well giving them away for material cost and there is a lot of time in the shed required to make up a set. Can make more but I would have to work out a better price and lock some deposits in.

I also really need to update this thread the car has come along way, just finished having a new motor built running high comp and E85 also redone suspension and brake setup, should be pretty competitive now.

Love your work. Waiting on the updated pics, curious to see what you did about the suspension/diff setup
