1985 GK GSR Project

Post by 81GH »

Hey PPL
Just recently bought a 1985 GK GSR
with power windows and power steering
slowly doing it up on weekends-project car

First thing we did when got it
Changed fuel filter oil filter oil change, brakes bled, changed gearbox oil
Much better :)

Changed clutch cable was stuffed- cracked and was slighty ceased

Flushed cooling system out, now running coolant.
may have to change the heater yet.....

bought another wrecked 84 gk gsr for spares, doesnt have power steering though, power windows
so now have 10 pepperpot mags wooooooooooo hooooooooo :)

Last weekend had the speedo repaired- temp gauge and speedo stuffed
Tried the speedo out of the 84, same problem lol, must of been common fault

here some dodgy fone pics
Image
Image
Image
Image

We decided too start with brakes and work our way up
back discs ok probably can be skimmed one more time
so leaving in for now needed new pads(almost no pads left lol)- whacked some heavy duty Bendix pads in
Front discs were to low, so decided ahhhhhhh F it
and bought some new slotted discs
and the brake line hose were pretty old
decided to get some braided lines made for it
and some heavy duty pads for the front too
ones in there were ok but may as well use freshies on the new discs

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

Hopefully finish the front brakes tomorrow
sand blasted all the 20 years of filth off the calipers etc
(weight reductions haaahahha)

Next thing
On wednesday diff from the 84 gsr is going in
the one in this one has way to much play in it
and makes really weird sound ocassionally.

then power steering getting sorted out
tis leaking :(

Then will start with the shocks and springs rubbers etc
probably lower the back a tad

Get all the boring stuff out the way
and start on the engine Yay :)

Post more as we go

Yea man we've only done front lines braided so far
they where about 70 bucks each from ABS
don't know if you have them in VIC
kinda expensive but they make them good,
you just give them samples and they make em up exact.
They have clear house over the top of the Braid
to keep it easy to clean etc
think can get different colours too
red, blue, black, silver
we got silver cos hard to see the colours through the
clear cover.

today i got bored
and run out of funds till next week
so started stripping parts of the spare 84 gk gsr
like driver side gaurd wasnt to bad
took front bumper lights and pretty much front end
took all the door strips off etc
will be taking more of it
salvage as much as can
and keep all half decent stuff
in the shed
Image
Image
just a lil taste of the rust in the 84 under grills at bottom of windscreen (delish)
Image

also debadged it
so have spare gsr badges if needed

Image
not as good condition as the ones on the 85
but good to have spares
next when get a chance
will jack the spare 84 up
cos has no back end atm
and take the gearbox out
so can get it rebuilt while still using the other one
and maybe take the engine out astron 1 2.6 though (but might put in gh'y 2L getting tired lol)
the alternator looks good and starter motor look good in the spare 84

and monday the 85 gsr project
is getting taken to get power steering fixed
they need it for 3 days
hmmmmmmmmm expensive, i think :( :o
oh well do it right once dont have to do it again
for long while hopefully

After getting the power steering fixed
this week im pretty broke
they had the car for the whole week
took it in on monday got it back fri afternoon
i missed it
also they ran into a bit of trouble because of the
exhaust system had no joins in it so couldnt unbolt it
the had to cut it, and later on when have to get more
stuff done, will prob have to cut again
which was really annoying cos they charged extra 50 bucks
cos they had to do that grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

but any way yesterday didnt do much
the grills under windscreen wipers where rattling
missing clips replaced em from the 84
cut an polished under them, no rust
well nothing to extreme (alot better than the 84)
Image

also went for a big drive in it to the northern suburbs
but on the way bought few lil things for it
Image
new wiper blades bit bigger than skinny 80's ones
actually better value to get them than just refills
Image
Image
also got a nice big k and N pod filter for when this bitch goes efi
choose red to go with the gsr badges :D
also bought one for my toyota (gonna be a bitch to fit it in that fuker)
so buying 2 i got them 75 bucks each, which was good cos every where else
wanting 95

old 80's skinny wiper blades
Image

with newer skool blades on (would look better if sprayed the rest of arm but always looks shite when u do it urself)
Image

next on the hit list
getting ball joints rubbers etc that needs to be done
grrrrrrrrr so much boring stuff but getting there

On wednesday, front end on the GSR got done
2x pedders balls joints
Urethane control arm bushes
Urethane Radius Rod bushes
also they didnt notice in the quote few weeks before
but the RH Radius Rod was bent that had to be replaced too.
was bent.

In the quote they also said needed new pitman arm
wish was replaced few weeks ago when got power steering done.

only got a chance to drive it this weekend
feels bit better but still bit of play in steering, hopefully will come good when power steering
is adjusted. also still feels sloppy round corners
probably due to the stuffed shockers
the will be the next thing of the list to do

wanted coil overs but gonna be lot of mucking round
and prob cant be done
then was thinking konis
also lots of finnnnnnnng around

but may just settle for pedders sports ryders for now.
but still thinking ........................
otherwise i never get on too the exciting stuff
like engine work

so once again out of money lol
but next pay will get shockers done
and maybe get lowered springs for the back
so sits a bit lower
make it nice an stiff

and today stripped more stuff off the 84 spare parts car
took mirrors etc off
took the whole dash out
yuck gonna b a messy job when have to change
the heater in the 85 project
and took console out etc

anyway thats it for now
peace

ok so haven't done much yet
only decided yesterday to go on spending spree
for the GSR.................Went to pedders got sports ryder set up for the GSR
new shock and springs
Image
Image
Image
Also they had this nice chunky front sway bar
lying around for a long while, gave us good price because wanted to get rid of it
cos they ordered it for someones scorpion and the guy never picked it up (think said was a shelby one)
also had chunky rear sway bar that the same person never picked up
could of got that cheap too ,unfortunately wont fit on the back end of GSR
Image
Image
So tomorrow and sunday me and dad will put on what we can
then get them to do front shocks+springs
we should be able to do rear end
and the front sway bar, will be intersted to see the size difference in the original
will take pics and car height before and after, spose to be roughly inch lower
front and back than what it is now.

Later

yeah i hoping so, TUFSIG is at the perfect hieght,
im little worried itll be too low at front because already pretty low
without the front lip on.
bit hard to judge when theres no level ground at home lol
but we will see soon enuff, cosw plan to put the lip back on
at a later stage ;)

Ok here's some pics of how the GSR sits at the moment
before the sport shocks n springs.

The Front:
Image
Image
Image

The Rear:
Image
Image
Image
Image

(Measurements only real ruff cos no level ground at home so makes it hard)

ok today didnt get as far as we wanted
found the sway bar harder to take out than we thought :(
but got the old one out
and somone thought itd be a great idea to paint
every thing, of course didnt dry in time lol
and while on ramps at front thought
itd be a great idea to jack it up at the back so we
culd start on the rear springs and shocks, while waiting for paint to dry lol
being a trusty jack it freaking slipped off bam
lucky we parked it close to post if wasnt there
somone wuld be dead :o , just glad ev bod ok
and no damage to car, as far as know atm
DON'T BUY CHEAP JACKS

Pic of the old sway bar next to old
new one not as thick, but alot heavier and harder though (pretty sure old one would be the standard one)

After misshap yesterday
we managed to finally get the sway bar on
after hours of swaering etc lol
we also did the back end- new springs and shocks
slighty lower, glad its done, will get pedders to do the front shocks
and check sway bar and realign it etc if needed.

some shots of the shelby front sway bar on the car:

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

As you can see we painted few things also, turned out to be good idea
looks good i reckon, feels lot better too. Sorry for the grease too, needs a good clean
but all in good time

The old shocks and springs:

Image
Image

A comparison:

Image
Spring quite a bit chunkier and bit lower

Image
Image
Think will have to get some more braided brake lines made up for rear
and get slotted discs for back at later stage, ok for now
Image
Diff is Quite rusty, off the spare gsr, works better than the one that was on it
had to much play in it. Will clean up at later stage..when decide what i want to do
engine wise.
Image
Think we did a good job cleaning up the brake calipers :)
Image

And the final result:
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

Think roughly 30mm lower but looking at b4 pic looks the same,
prob cos of not level ground and didnt park it in exactly same place grrrrrrrrrrrrr,
hope will get a little lower when stuff settles a bit.
next prob paint up few other things put back on
change petrol tank from spare one paint that up
Then maybe get one of the gearboxes rebulit
and cooling system done
then engine finally. lol

Made our first booooo boooooooo
think this is why didnt sit much lower.......

Image
Dad looked at spare GSR today and saw that the notches in the springs sit in
a groove and face the front of the car
so one on left needs to spin around 180 degrees
and the left one almost there just need to spin a bit.
so hopefully that make it sit at proper height
happens when your rushing and when its dark lol

gonna do a whole heap of painting on weekend
and attempt the front shocks ourselves
gonna be a nightmare i think lol :?

and got some heavy duty fuel hose
gonna paint the spare GSR petty tank
and replace hoses on it
whack that in, cos other one bit rusty and think its leaking

ok this weekend fixed the spring problem
this is the notch i was talking about that the springs shuld've
fitted in (it was dark at time so didnt notice lol)
Image
thought we culd jack it up and spin the springs
but the shockers lower than original so had to unbolt the shocks again
oh well done now
and sitting in right place atleast
Image
so now the springs a sitting in right place
is a little lower
Image
Image
and started painting few more things
painted front towing mounts, tray that goes under sump
that was a betch to clean up, windscreen wiper blades also.

before the intense sanding lol
Image

after lots of cleaning up and bit of paint
Image
Image
Image

Also did some work on the Spare GSR Petrol tank
gonna pop it in the GSR project.

Before:
Image

After Sanding:
Image

Bit of paint: didnt finish it :(
Image
Image

We were gonna start on the front shocks and springs but dad wasn't home
most of weekend, so did this stuff instead.
don't know if its true but dad said he tlkd to someone who knows someone
who maybe able to rebuild standard diff to LSD
if true would be nice then can get it done
with spare diff, clean it up paint it up also
get rear shelby sway bar to match the front lol
then wont have to change springs agian
so thatd work out great if it true.

Changing front springs and shocks is as easy as changing ya jocks. Just need spring compressors and some tools. You have done good yourself so far and should be capable.

ok on friday dad finished painting fuel tank
while i was at work, because the paint takes to long to dry
so we could get more done this weekend.

Image

Think he's been a bit generous with the paint, already used up 3 cans lol
but thats including the drip tray front towing mounts, windscreen wiper arms.
Image
Painted Towing mounts back on car :ugeek:
Image
Image
Image

Today took out the old petty tank, looks like has been leaking in few places
judging by all the wet patches :o  :?
Image
Image
Image
Image

also replaced all the fuel hose on the tank with
heavy duty injector fuel hose ;)
Pretty expensive hose though lol
and proper hose clamps too
Image
Image
Image

also replaced fuel hoses from tank to main fuel lines on car
this bit of a comparison between the hoses

OLD:
Image

NEW:
Image

We thought about it and decided to put the float from the 85 tank cos we new it
was working ok
quickly swapped them over and put tank in.
Image

put about 10L from jerry can went to servo put another 20L in,
good doesnt look like its leaking
took for a quick drive................

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
PETROL GAUGE NOT WORKING RAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWR
WHAT A PAIN IN ASS, HAVE TO TAKE IT OUT AGAIN
loosened bolts to see if sensor wires were plugged in properly,
yeap all ok, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr,

ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS WHY ITS NOT WORKING?
so Frustrating AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
