Im trying not to have to modify the support or anything but if it has to be that way then ill definitely get one of those. Im hoping there is something out there that will fit nicely or something that can be made up fairly cheap. Ill keep this updated as i go though - cheers for the advice

Ha!
Im hoping it will be a little pocket rocket in the end and worth all the blood sweat and tears.
Next step is upper intake manifold and exhaust manifold off you, then get some head studs, VRS kit and timing chain kit, while i have it all apart etc might as well do it all.
Then while my wallet is hurting from all of this ill get a rooted GTX28/30 and do a mock up of hotside and get that all sorted then all i need to do is FMIC and ECU side of things, replace turbo with non faulty one and touch wood nothing else goes wrong or needed

So i went ahead and took the head off and painted the block. Turned out better than expected, not only because i find out the block has been rebuilt (complete with cylinder tolerance stampings) but it looks better than i had hoped for a quick afternoon in the garage spray can job.

Block as i took head off - not even wiped down this is how clean it was. Amazing.

Next week i hope to clean sump up, drop lower intake manifold to stealth to get a thermostat relocation. Next step after that is head studs and metal gasket so i can get the head back on. Followed by new timing kit complete with gears etc.

Speaking to a few people today ive been convinced im going to do a dizzy delete as im going stand alone because turbo anyway, so for the little outlay it will be worth it in the end. A friend can design and laser cut the trigger wheel on the cheap as well. Be interesting how it goes. Ill post up a separate thread on how it was done and costs etc for those interested.

Purchased a turbo today.
Some no name china brand TD05, .50 .63 rear, purely for mock up to keep momentum going.
Tis brand new still but i wont be using it so ill just be selling it on to make my money back - but for 75 bucks i cant really argue.
If im mocking this one up itll mean ill more than likely just buy an evo turbo off someone whos upgraded etc to replace it. Easy and plentiful enough to do.

So I was so lazy today , I decided to do this the easy way , took it to work 3d scaned the manifold and laser cut the first part of your plenium then cnc folded/rolled the outer piece
Now I have to weld the plate on then cnc machine the bellmouths into the ports and weld outer part on
It took 3 minutes to cut the plate
In the old days that would have taken hours
Image
And yeah its pre buffed the first stage of polishing
Tomorrow I might have to do some actual work

Shopping spree continues, replaced the 13x5.5 cheviots with some beefier 15x8 steelies to better accommodate the previous picture. Wouldnt get traction in those cheese cutters. Will be sitting on these till i can track down a set of 15x8 or 9 watanabes. Little flaring and some offset and 9s will fit front and rear. Plenty of clearance on shock tower on the front and with guards rolled i think itll take them, fill up the depressingly empty stock guards nicely. Might even get away with 10s on rear if enough offset and flaring is achieved...lol. Plenty of room to lower the s**t out of it too which is also pleasing.
Only drawback is i have to machine the centre holes a mm or less they only just dont fit over the centre lip. But for the price i cant argue at all. Got em dirt cheap mates rates.

Moar progress.
Stealth should be coming next saturday to test fit the intake manifold so had to get my ass in gear and pull the motor to dummy fit the new one in. An hour later and it's done on a friday night...love how easy these engines are to pull, didnt even need to jack the car, only crawling under for the 4x 10ml bolts for the inspection cover...
Need to get box out now and then fit new box and block. But not before i give it all a bloody good degrease and gurney down there...old motor had a bad front seal which went everywhere which i didnt bother with as i knew it was coming out soon for the 54.

Had an idea - why bother will all the pistons and crank and anything else that creates unnecessary friction - just bolt the turbo straight to the gearbox?

Decided to go ahead and tear apart and clean the engine bay in preparation for the new motor. Bit of quality alkaline degreaser and a gerni can do wonders.
Amazing such an old car can come up so clean with virtually no signs of rust etc. Found that the right hand side front has been in an accident at some stage but only slightly and is only cosmetic under the fender if youre fussy.
Another surprise is that the chrome sills came out with all plastic clips in tact and not brittle. Not even new cars i dismantle at work do that...

Finally got my ass into gear and mounted the 4g54 in. Found out that the 4g54 sigma mounts are far too low and give virtually no clearance for sump so luckily i had some 4g52 sigma mounts that brought it up for enough clearance everywhere.
Hopefully get a cold side test fit on saturday and speak further about plans and timeframes, although with the RVR about to be put on the road and a few rego's on dailys coming up itll be a month or so before anymore money is invested, will have to find other things to do like strip the interior etc.
Heres some pics for your enjoyment.

Not gonna be no room once you chuck a turbo and inlet on haha looking good man.

Not really. Intake almost rubs the strut tower and theres maybe 1cm between master and turbo/head and turbo either side so some bloody fancy pipework will need to be done for it, but im sure Stealth is more than qualified to do the job.

Couldnt help myself. Bought some ARP head studs through work today. When the gasket kit arrives next week ill be able to finally marry the head and block in holy matrimony.

Redline all the gears!
Going to be very interesting how long the stock motor holds up to the abuse ill give it though. I want to run 18, but realistically ill probably drop it back to 15 in a vein attempt to get some sort of "reliability" out of it...or rather more than 1 skid before it throws a rod knowing my luck. Just cant wait to get the damn thing running, but every time i go to buy a part i end up upgrading...which usually means a whole chain of other upgrades to accommodate...
Guess ill have to barrage stealth tomorrow when he comes to test fit this manifold for me.

Another thing i will be able to tell when he does fit it is if i have enough room to relocate the booster/master to the passenger side of the firewall as this turbo is going to be a bloody tight fit and its not the biggest turbo my car will see in its life im sure.

Either way, pics and updates tomorrow night !

So today I took some bits and pieces up to trail fit to get a Guage for how much room there is , was quite surprised there's heaps of room , but the intake I had started is now in the scrap bin and plans for something new and different , as theres way more room in a lc than I remember there being in a la , half tempted to make a water to air intercooler inside the intake manifold (H) will have to price that
And the exhuast side has a bit of room but the turbo is quite a a reasonable size and will need to be mounted in a different position to a factory unit
So full custom hot and cold sides coming up
But I got a feeling im going to have to clean up my shed so maverick can sit next to hulk for a couple of weeks for upgrades , hopefully it won't come to that but we will see
Good times love seeing other people's projects taking shape
Cheers stealth

I like the idea of the cooler in the manifold. That would be sick. Im glad there is more room than you thought, more space for activities!

Re: Maverick

Yeah enough room for a fat chick to swing a a cat to precise
And yeah thinking put the cooler inside the intake that way we dont need a barrel cooler
Be most cost effective , and you can still put a front mount on for super crispy cold intake air , and yeah the hot side is just going to a lot of pipe work but Im shore I can mount it loud and proud
Dont worry , it will look the part ! It will just be a shit load of work but totally doable
Cheers stealth

Gasket kit arrived today. If i can be arsed during the week ill put a kit through the engine otherwise if i get time during the weekend is more likely. least then the studs and head will be done and dusted and i can prep the interior next.

After conferring with my 'council' overseeing the build decisions ive opted to go for a hilux rear diff, and disc convert it. This way i can pick any disc/caliper (5x114 though) from work and make it fit. I found a 330ml rotor/caliper off a territory rear end but im thinking its too big, and they run an internal hand brake drum. Thinking maybe old falcon as they are still big enough, and some run an external hand brake on the caliper, which is ideal as i wont have to stuff around converting to a hydro hand brake for them.
Also going 5 stud on the front will probably be the biggest problem, as i dont want to go custom strut/control arm etc etc but i need to match the PCD for legal purposes. Ill have to have a better talk with stealth next time hes up for options. Means im back on the lookout for wheels again. Probably the same style steelies as they dont look to bad and are usually cheap as chips.
Hopefully getting my ass into gear this weekend and get the head done. Sump on. Front and rear seals etc get some of this seal kit through it etc.
Also been convinced to first go NA for initial shakedown to get proof of concept etc and then bolt the turbo on. Still going to do everything minus turbo and manifold.
Picked up a 70mm Drive By Wire throttle body and pedal off a 380 from work. One less cable in the bay and while negligible, still technically an upgrade over cable throttle (so i hear)
Work will probably slow down for the next month as i dropped the RVR block to get done this arvo so should be on the road soon and will with rego, tyres etc will probably take race car funds for a bit.
Hopefully more updates on sunday night.
